Cruising Through the Panama Canal

In 2009, five couples and my husband and I cruised through the Panama Canal. It was one of the couples thirtieth anniversary, so we came along for the fun! We studied all the various routes and cruises we could take and came up with this cruise.

We flew in one day early and stayed in Fort Lauderdale so we wouldn't miss our debarkation. We took a river taxi to a restaurant and the taxi driver acted as our tour guide. We were able to see all the huge homes on the river and the celebrities who lived in them.

Panama Canal Choices

Panama CanalThere are several choices one has to make before going. Do you want to sail through the locks and then turn around and return to your original debarkation city, Or, do you want to sail THROUGH the entire canal and experience all of the locks on both sides of the canal. We chose the latter and the only disappointment was not getting to stop in Panama itself.
Although it was so stifling there, I don't think I could have stood walking around. The heat was immense. Remember we were on the last ship through before their summer.

Cruising the Panama Canal

Cayman Islands

Our first stop was the Cayman Islands. My husband, Dan and I, were determined to snorkel. So we took a beach excursion and snorkeled. We aren't exactly professionals, but this was about our only excursion and we had a tremendous time! The water is so clear, the fish under water are so vibrant. It is a world all to its own, under water. We had just turned 60 and had learned a new skill!

The Locks

Panama CanalWe got up early the day we cruised the locks. They serve drinks on one of the decks and rolls for everyone. When I stepped outside, I wasn't prepared for the humidity that hit me. It took my breath away! We saw several older gentlemen go down on the deck because of the heat! I couldn't enjoy the locks as much as I wanted to because the air was so heavy. But the locks were amazing! I watched from the air conditioned decks and balcony. A ship was going through beside us and we watched the locks fill up and allow the ship to go to the next lock. Absolutely amazing!

Cruising the Panama Canal

Costa Rica

Panama CanalThe surprise of the trip came in Costa Rica! Our travel agent gave us a free excursion in Costa Rica. We took a cruise down a river and saw amazing birds and a crocodile! Then we ate lunch in a wonderful restaurant.

Cruise Through the Panama Canal

Mexico

The next few days we stopped in Huatulco, Mexico, Cabo San Lucas and Acapulco, Mexico. My favorite is Cabo San Lucas. It could be because we bought a diamond ring for me there--but the scenery is outstanding. Acapulco had the divers that risk their lives everyday to dive off dangerous rocks.
