18 Inch Doll Easter Basket | Free Plastic Canvas Pattern

Make an Easter Basket for your 18 inch Dolls

My two youngest girls are in the midst of the American Girl doll craze. They pour over each and every catalog that arrives. Believe it or not, they are already making out their Christmas wish list, and it is not even Easter! While I am enjoying this phase of their lives, I do not enjoy the prices that American Girl charges for their clothes and accessories. Fortunately for my girls, their mom loves making American Girl Doll Crafts. My latest creation is an 18 inch doll Easter Basket.

The doll Easter basket is constructed from plastic canvas and works up quickly. It took me a couple of hours from start to finish while watching tv in the evening. It could easily be completed by a beginner or a child (with mom's help of course). My eight year old daughter is learning plastic canvas and I am going to help her make one for each of her dolls. We can't leave any of the dolls out, don't you know?! They all need their own Easter baskets to set out for the Easter bunny!

This pattern features the Roman stitch, which is just a combination of horizontal and vertical straight stitches. The effect looks a bit like a woven basket.

Keep reading for the free plastic canvas pattern to make one yourself. I hope you enjoy making this for that special little girl in your life!

Stitches Used in This Free Plastic Canvas Pattern

This pattern uses the continental stitch and the Roman stitch to create the design. It also uses the whipstitch to hold the pieces together and the overcast stitch to finish things off. If you are unfamiliar with any of these stitches, be sure to check out the links below for free instructions from Annie's Attic.
Continental Stitch
The most basic stitch used in plastic canvas

18 Inch Doll Easter Basket Plastic Canvas Pattern - Step 1

Stitch the basket handle

18 inch Easter basket handle pattern

I am stitching the example in hot pink so the stitches show up better in the pictures.

Stitching Color Key

  • Cut 2 strips from plastic canvas that will be used for handles (2 x 50 holes)

    basket handle step 1

  • Stitch both pieces according to the graph with pale pink yarn.

    basket handle step 2

  • With the wrong sides together, overcast the edges of both pieces together to form the handle.

    Stitch the basket body

    Easter basket pattern side

Cut the basket side according to the pattern. Stitch the horizontal stitches according to the pattern. The unstitched areas on the sides are where we are going to overlap the canvas to form the basket shape.

Now you are going to stitch the vertical stitches on the same piece according to the pattern. For ease of viewing, I have showed these stitches in yellow. However, you should stitch them in the same color as the horizontal stitches.

Now you need to overlap 2 holes width on the short side and form the basket shape. I use a straight stitch across the two holes to hold the two pieces together. This will be hidden when we finish the pattern.

Then you need to fill in the blank space using horizontal straight stitching.

Complete the basket body by adding in the vertical stitching following the same pattern as you used above.

18 Inch Doll Easter Basket Plastic Canvas Pattern - Step 3

    Assembling the basket

Leaving the 3 inch plastic canvas circle unstitched, whipstitch the circle to the basket body.

Next you want to overcast the top and attach the handles.

When you stitch the handle to the basket, leave the last two holes on the short end inside the basket and stitch into place. After you finish stitching your basket, a drop of hot glue between the handle end and the inside of the basket will help secure it.

Pin the remaining handle side in place to ensure that you have both ends spaced evenly on the basket. Continue the overcast stitch and attach the other end of the handle. Finish any overcasting that remains.

Now your basket is complete and you just need to fill it.

You will need a small amount of Easter grass and some mini eggs. The eggs I used were from a garland and each was about 1/2 inch in size. I just snipped off the end where it was attached to the garland.

Congratulations! You have finished your 18 inch Doll Easter Basket! Wasn't that easy?
