Age-Appropriate Toys to Keep Your 18-24 Month Old Toddler Playing, Learning and Having Fun
Whether you are a parent of a busy toddler, a grandparent looking for a great gift for your grandchild, or a childcare provider wanting to give your toddler area toys that have wide appeal, it can be a bit overwhelming trying to find playthings that will be the most fun and the best for a toddler's current stage of development.
To give you some ideas, I've compiled a list of 'top pick' toys in some general categories of playthings recommended for toddlers 18-24 months (1 1/2 to 2 years) old. These toys consistently get high ranks with parents and children, including my own family and circle of friends, as well as in Amazon reviews.

How an 18-24 Month Old is Developing and Playing
As a result, this age is full of experimentation. She wants to figure out what she can do, so her little hands are all over anything that can be manipulated - knobs, switches, doors, dials and the like. Spinning wheels and bouncing balls can provide great entertainment. Finding a variety of toys that have these appealing factors for your little problem solver to focus on will keep her exploring and testing her abilities in more appropriate places than door locks or DVD player knobs.
You'll see your toddler start imitating what he sees grownups do like holding a phone to their ear or 'driving' with a toy car's steering wheel, and he'll get a big kick out of you taking a 'bite' out of a piece of toy food he offers. On the other hand, the vast majority of children nearing 2 years old aren't able to play cooperatively with other kids their own age yet. Going-on-two year-olds do really well with unstructured play, so give them toys and let them have at it.

Bouncing Toy
The vast majority of toddlers I know love to bounce. It develops their balance, large motor skills and coordination, and is just plain fun.
Howdy Cow - The phthalate free bouncing rubber cow
Trumpette Howdy Cows, White
Amazon Price: $26.00 (as of 05/24/2012)![]()
Not only is this soft-rubber cow completely adorable, it's phthalate and latex-free. Once a child figures out that Howdy bounces, it's pretty much irresistible. My daughter is a bouncing addict, so this is perfect for her. If you have more than one child, be prepared to have more than one Howdy Cow to prevent conflict.
Scaled-Down 'Big People' Stuff
Toys for Toddlers' Pretending Fun
Toddlers this age love imitating what they see their parents doing, so toy brooms, shopping carts, tea sets, mowers, kitchens and the like tend to be big hits.
Step2 Little Helper’s Grocery Cart
Amazon Price: $33.85 (as of 05/24/2012)![]()
It's got solid, durable construction, but is still easy to maneuver for kids in this age group. My daughter took her stuffed animals 'shopping' quite a bit and enjoyed piling all sorts of things into the large basket. The 'kids' seat is a good size for many dolls or stuffed toys, and there's even an extra storage area underneath. I like that there aren't any holes in the basket for play food, blocks, or other little treasures to fall out.

Blocks of All Sizes
Blocks for 18-24 Month Olds
Sorting, stacking and manipulating blocks helps build your toddler's growing motor and organizational skills. Large blocks can become forts, hiding places and huge towers, while smaller ones can be sorted and built into all sorts of original creations.
Melissa & Doug Deluxe Jumbo Cardboard Blocks
Amazon Price: $19.56 (as of 05/24/2012)![]()
These Melissa and Doug bricks are sturdy enough to take a beating from rough and tumble toddler play. Different sizes and colors stimulate creative building and sorting. The set in my church's toddler childcare area gets heavy use each week with kids delightedly building and knocking down, and the blocks still look great.
Hot Toddler Gift idea for 2011
Yes, LEGO DUPLO blocks are a classic. There's a reason. They're just plain fun. This set is one of the most popular and highly reviewed toys for 18-24 month olds on Amazon.com for this year.
Lego Duplo Blocks
LEGO Duplo Basic Bricks (80 Pcs.)
Amazon Price: $22.95 (as of 05/24/2012)![]()
It's hard to beat LEGO DUPLO blocks for young childrens' building fun. Most toddlers this age (including my daughter) gravitate toward these colorful, easily handled blocks that can build so many different shapes..from a simple stack, to whatever your toddler's imagination and dexterity can handle. This 80-piece set has a good proportion of each type of block for easy building.
Toy Musical Instruments
Musical Instrument Toys for Toddlers 12-18 Months
Your toddler probably already loves music and trying out different noises, so this is a great time for toy musical instruments. Whether it's a toy keyboard, bang-able drums, or something to shake and rattle along with, he'll enjoy making his own tunes
Parents Magazine Bee Bop Band Play & Learn Drum & Instruments
Amazon Price: $38.50 (as of 05/24/2012)![]()
The big drum can store all the colorfully fascinating bug instruments for this appealing set. One of my daughter's friends gets loads of use out of hers and especially enjoys the jingle bell ant and the shakey eggs. I like that the drum is loud enough to satisfy toddlers' noisemaking desires, but still not too much for parents' ears...a big plus for when your child's into drumming. All the instruments are a great size for little hands and feature a good variety of textures too.

Celebrate the little victories of putting a puzzle together! Your toddler will also be gaining fine motor skills and enjoying putting things in the right place. Choose wooden puzzles with just a few big chunky pieces.
Vehicles Chunky Puzzle
Amazon Price: $7.99 (as of 05/24/2012)![]()
This one's from the trusted puzzlemakers, Melissa and Doug. Our local library has this cute vehicle puzzle in its play area, and it's always in demand. It's technically recommended for age 2+, but I've seen 18 month olds have lots of fun with it. My daughter and I have enjoyed talking about all the vehicles and what they do. They're a great size for little hands, and are sturdy and chunky enough to stand up on their own to be played with separately.
More Puzzles for Toddlers
My daughter and nieces really enjoyed these great starter puzzles with familiar animals and shapes. Sturdy knobs make the pieces easy to grasp and manipulate.
Balance Bikes
Balance Bikes for 18 Month Olds and Up
This confidence-building, alternative to a tricycle has great appeal to 18-24 month olds --they can ride their own 'big kid' bike. In addition, balance bikes (also called pre-bikes or glide bikes) let children learn to balance naturally.
Strider PREbike Balance Running Bike, Green
Amazon Price: $78.60 (as of 05/24/2012)![]()
There's so much to love about this bike. My daughter got one at 22 months and it's been one of her very favorite toys. The seat and handlebars adjust for kids from 18 months to 5 years. Talk about a toy that lasts! It's very durable and stands up to what young children can dish out; ours is still looking great. You may not think that's a big deal until your child decides that he or she has had enough of riding and you're 6 blocks from home. The tires look like they're inflatable, but they're actually a spongy but very durable plastic. They give a good ride, but there's no maintenance.
Books
Good Books for Toddlers 18 to 24 Months
Your child has figured out more connections between what you say and what's going on in a story. When you read to your child, pause often to ask questions about the objects in the book, answer her questions, and talk about what's happening on the page
Go, Dog. Go! (Beginner Books)
Amazon Price: $1.99 (as of 05/24/2012)![]()
At this stage, toddlers can handle slightly more complex pictures, so bring out Go, Dog. Go! I loved this one as a child, and my daughter followed suit. There are all sorts of dog activities, colors, motions and the toddler-appropriate suspense of wondering where the dogs are going. We enjoy talking about all the activities at the crazy dog party at the end of the book. You'll find yourself repeating lots of lines from this one...'Do you like my hat?', etc. Another bonus...it's a good one for explaining what we do at bedtime. I told my daughter that at bedtime we go to sleep and sleep all night just like the dogs.

Washable Crayons and Paper
Crayons for Your Toddler Artist
Your toddler is getting more interested in making her mark on things. Keep washable crayons and paper ready to teach her where to create art, then display the results on the fridge. Hand your toddler just a few crayons at a time so she's not overwhelmed.
Crayola 3 Ct Washable Tadoodles Crayon Buddies
Amazon Price: $7.19 (as of 05/24/2012)![]()
Cute creatures help your littlest artist get a good grip on her crayons as she's starting out making her mark. As she gets a bit better at holding them, you can use the triangular crayons inside by themselves. I like that the triangle shape keeps them still..they don't roll away.
Train Sets
Toddler-Friendly Trains
Most toddlers enjoy trains, and they have fun putting cars together and zooming them around tracks. It's also a fun way for them to explore surfaces as they find out how their train runs differently over carpet, on a bare floor or on the couch.
Fisher-Price Little People Musical Zoo Train
Amazon Price: $16.99 (as of 05/24/2012)![]()
We have an older version of this cute train. While it's a toy that doesn't 'do' much other than play music and have a few moving parts, that's actually a benefit. It's fun to put the animals in and take them out, pull it around, and go 'choo choo' along with the train. Makes for more imaginative play.
