The First US Proof Set

The 1936 proof set minted in Philadelphia by the United States Mint was the beginning of the modern era of proof coins that offered each denomination of the coins issued that year placed in complete sets. The 1936 proof set contained five coins, the Lincoln wheat cent, the Indian head nickel, the Mercury dime, the Washington quarter and the Walking Liberty half dollar.

The Lincoln cent and the Indian head nickel coins were first minted in a satin finish and did not go over to well with coin collectors. The mint changed the minting process to produce the two coins in a brilliant mirror like finish found on the dime, quarter and half dollar coins. Proof coins included in the 1936 proof set were also sold individually by the U.S. Mint.
