The 1940s was a decade that brought to life many of the pop culture icons of the 20th Century. From the TV set to the board game Scrabble, Hollywood stars like Rita Hayworth and Lana Turner to fashion trends, here's a look back at what was popular during this historic decade.

1940s Sports - A Decade in Review

  • The decade began with the Cincinnati Reds winning the World Series and the Chicago Bears becoming the NFL Champions.
  • Due to the outbreak of World War II, both the 1940 and 1944 Olympic Games were cancelled.
  • Baseball great Ted Williams was sworn into the military on May 22, 1942. Joe DiMaggio and several other pro athletes would also put their sports careers on hold to enlist.
  • Jackie Robinson opened the door to integrated American sports when he was signed as a player to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1945.


  • Minimum Wage Trivia

    1949: The minimum wage jumps from 40 cents to 75 cents per hour on October 26, 1949.

    Fashion Trends of the 1940s

    World War II dictated much of the fashion trends in the early and mid 1940s. While Hollywood remained all glitz and glamour, fashions outside the movie capitol were dominated by:


    • Floral prints in the early 1940s
    • Geometric prints sometimes called "atomic prints" became popular in the mid to late 40s.
    • Patriotic nautical themes
    • Color palettes that mirrored military: dark greens and khakis
    • Trousers became much more popular as did wedges and low heels, compensating for war-induced shortages in stockings and gasoline.

    M&Ms! So glad they were invented!

    The 1940s also saw the invention of some great foods and candies. Frank Mars and Bruce Murrie first manufactured M&Ms, a candy-coated chocolate in six different colors - red, green, yellow, brown and violet. In 1949 violet was replaced by tan.

      That was fun! We've just been going through our in-law's stuff to help clear out their house and have found a lot of fun things from the 1940s, including an engraved watch and ... clothing. No fooling. :)
