1950's SCI-FI MOVIES.

Ranked #5,274 in Entertainment, #65,187 overall

My favourite classic science-fiction movies of the 1950's.

~

I am a 1950's sci-fi nut. I love the storylines, and especially the great special effects that they used, and that was long before the current CGI trend!! Hollywood also made some good sci-fi movies in the 40's and the 60's, but it was during the 1950's that many of the best sci-fi's came out, or at least I think so anyway. Some are just good for a bit of a laugh at how silly they were, but others are sheer masterpieces of sci-fi movie magic which cannot be bettered even today.

Every movie genre has its good, bad and ugly movies, and the science-fiction category is no exception. Sometimes they can be a bit corny, and many of their technical and scientific aspects are either just wrong or very questionable, and quite often the clothing was not appropriate for what the characters were doing, eg: space travel, but overlooking those quaint aspects they are mostly great fun movies.

Below I have listed what I believe to be the best examples of the genre, and my favourites, and I have left out the dreadfuls, (sorry to those of you who are cult fans of the bad sci-fi's !!). Most are in colour, but there is the occassional good black & white movie too. Mostly they are space movies, as I love space pictures, but I have also included a couple of good movies about other subjects.

You will see that I have included a star rating in each movie's description. This may assist you in deciding whether or not a movie is worth seeing. The rating is out of 5 stars, and reflects my personal opinion of a picture in terms of how good I think the movie is and how much I enjoy it. I hope it is helpful; please enjoy!

My favorite is War of the Worlds, with The Day the Earth Stood Still a close second.
TDTESS is still a deep movie if you watch it carefully.

Great list! I haven't seen them all, but have seen a few that were excellent, in particular FORBIDDEN PLANET, DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, and EARTH VS FLYING SAUCERS.

I'd say you are a fan for sure with your great reviews and sad to say I still have not seen them all. I still remember when we say "Day The Earth Stood Still, we kids went around saying, "Klaatu Barada Nikto" for days, man that was a cool movie in its time!

Let's not bother with the remakes. The day the earth stood still. Invasion of the bodysnatchers. Hmm.. :(
  • LabKitty Mar 10, 2011 @ 8:27 pm | delete
    Let's grade the remakes!

The Thing (1982) - Way Cool.
The Thing (2011) - Who knows.
Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) - Meh.
Journey to Center of Earth (as "The Core"; 2003) - Yikes.
The Blob (1988) - Double bucky way cool.
War of the Worlds (2005) - Holy cow.

Also, didn't This Island Earth wind up as the MST3K movie? That prolly made some folks unhappy...

    Hi Labkitty,

Thanks for your like and your comment. I agree with your assessment of the remakes; I hate it when they re-do the classics these days, as usually they are crap, and that can put some people off exploring the originals - what a pity.

Yes, you are right - This Island Earth did end up being the MST3000 movie, it is a hoot, but maybe some didn't like it.

    Thanks and regards,
    mrwrkathm.
