1960s Hairstyles

Bold new looks flashed onto the scene, paralleling the music and fashion revolutions. Young people took the stage in politics and style, and the world has never been the same.

The Unisex 1960s Styles

Worn by men and women

The Afro is the most notable because of its appeal to men and women equally. It even crossed to other cultures. In the upper left, actress and model Marsha Hunt shows an attractive version. It was later parodied in Hollywood (The Brady Bunch Movie).

To the upper right, we have a Beatles, MopTop haircut. It was common for men but rare in celebrity females. Here, Kim Cute-as-a-Button Darby sports one in the 1969 John Wayne movie, True Grit.

To the lower left, we have the hippie Indian style (thanks to Cher), so-called because it mimicked Hollywood's version of the native Americans. The Hippies who were getting back to nature liked it as it required little effort to maintain, just a headband. It was not often seen on celebrities, though it has made a recent comeback (Paris Hilton).

On the lower right, we have the short-short little boy style, displayed by Twiggy. It was not overwhelmingly popular because the early 1960s concentrated on big hair, while the latter were influenced by unkempt hippie hair.

Big Hair of the 1960s

Leftover from the 1950s

A lot of hairspray was needed to keep these in place. Sleeping was a nightmare. Despite the torture, it was a big deal (and very much influenced by Jackie Kennedy).

Upper: The Beehive Pompadour of Dusty Springfield and the Beehives of the Ronnettes.

Lower: Big Hair of Marlo Thomas and the Flip of Mary Tyler Moore.

The Feminine 60s

The greatest sex appeal of the decade

Upper: The sex kitten look (first popularized by Brigitte Bardot), but here in the 60s on Julie Christie. To her right is a look that has crossed the decade, the long blonde hair of Marianne Faithfull.

Lower: Mary Quant started out with a standard Page Boy, but as you'll see later, her style was customized in unique ways. Beside her, the combination hairdo of big, banged, and waterfall as worn by Ronnie Spector.

Countoured Hair Dos of Mary Quant

The U.K was experiencing the rise of The Mods (Moderns)

The countoured Page Boy was shortened to a bob, but her hairdresser took it to the extreme with the Contoured MopTop, producing a look that would be emulated in Star Trek which began in the 1960s. Spock, the Vulcan, had to look like a creature from another world. Why not take an inspired leap on its Original Five Year mission from the alien shores of England. The Vulcan look has remained basically the same throughout each new Star Trek series. All Mary lacks is the the pointed ears and eyebrows.

1960s Hairspray Commercial

You had to have the hold, but you had to have the volume and attitude. Just don't become unpopular if your poor little boyfriend has to encounter something alien about your tresses.
