Remembering the Music of the 1960's

Isn't it funny how a piece of music or a specific smell can take us back in time? We hear it and instantly in our mind we are transported to a time when life was simple and memories were being made.
I wasn't around until early 70's but all through my childhood Saturday nights were family time. After supper there was a habitual routine for my parents and all four of us children. I had a little boom box radio that I'd set up in the dining room, turning the dial until I found 'the station' that always made my Daddy smile. Solid Gold Saturday Night as it was called back then hosted by Dick Bartley. Daddy would pull out the 1000 to 2000 piece puzzle and dump the pieces on the table. Mommy made some pizza rolls or snacks of some sort and we all gathered around. It was cheap, inexpensive, fun and warm familty together time. To this day if I hear Tommy James & The Shondells "I think were alone now" or The Searchers "Love Potion Number 9" I go back in time and can see daddy's hands seperating the puzzle pieces, smell mommys little person pizza snacks and hear my brothers laughing and poking at one another. Sometimes the memories make me smile and sometimes they make me cry, homesick to go back to childhood. Either way it is a good feeling and music can do that more so than any other trigger that I know of.
This lens is totally devoted to remembering all the great songs of the 1960's, when music was real and artists could actually play an instrument or at the very least had some vocal talent.

Did you know?

Little interesting tidbit I read recently is that Soap Lake WA wishes to construct the worlds largest 'working' lava lamp to place in the center of town?

Music from a Classic Decade

Whether you were around in the 1960's or not you must admit the love songs were mushy and the dance beats made you want to move.
Here are a few 1960's musical collections. I don't think you could go wrong adding any one of these to your home entertainment mix.

Sounds of the 60's

A decent mix of girl bands, heavier music, love songs and feel good cruisin songs. Take a listen and see if you aren't transported through time.

Music and Culture

It is well known that music effects culture of every era. Fads are many times started simply because a well known artist wears something or promotes it. On the flipside of this many times music itself is influenced by current events.
Fashion trends of the 60's changed from early to late in the decade there were both the hippie clothes and the mod fashion.
Sonny and Cher as well as Elvis Presley helped push the Bell Bottom fashion fad to its frenzy during this decade. Bell Bottoms remained popular into the 70's and again resurfaced in the 90's (under another name but still the same mold).
Dance styles are fad and fashion as much as any new clothing trend. I think we could all agree the The Twist could legally be copywrited to Chubby Checker.
Other trends and fashion fads of the sixties include but are not limited to Granny Glasses (John Lennon), Hair ironing, Mood rings, go go boots, lava lamps, smiley faces (these did not originate with Forrest Gump), love beads and tye dye T shirts.

You decide here!! Music or culture?

In the 1960's would you say that Culture infuenced the music or that Music influenced the culture.

Music totally influenced culture, only celebrities could push these fads.

amandascloset0 says:

In all honosty I think it was a little of both. However, I do think Music pushed culter a little more so. Basically because of fads that would never have caught on by any other means.

Music was just an expression of what was already going on in the world.

Pastiche says:

They were intertwined, but art usually reflects what's happening in the artist's world ... music told the story of life in the Sixties. I remember it well.

I agree with TrueGhostTales.

I agree with TrueGhostTales.

TrueGhostTales says:

I also think it was a mix of both. Tough question really.

Jimi Hendrix 1965 playing backup for Buddy & Stacy

Jimi appears as a guitar player in "The Royal Company" playing in the back-up band for Buddy & Stacy on the WLAC-TV Channel 5 show "Night Train" performing "Shotgun". On the same show Jimmy Church performs "In The Midnight Hour", the Wilson Pickett version of the song was released in late June - early July. Billy Cox has said that Jimi left and returned to Nashville several times, this could have been one of those visits...
Hendrix is playing on the left side of the video screen, his image partially obscured throughout by one of the vocalists, you can notice his left handed playing style.
