Kent University Students Burying The American Constitution During 1970 Protest
This lens honors the music of the protest movement of the 1960's, a violent time in American History.
The Kent State Protests were the ending of an era and decade of assassinations, war and unrest.
The music lives on in our psyche and gives substance to our memories.
And the Constitution is Still at Risk.
My Family History
Activist Legacy

Looking back, I can see that we were raised in exciting times.
But living through it, we sometimes failed to see the whole picture.
I remember feeling great confusion in the face of the relentless change that often happened because of violent acts.
My parents became active in what was called "The Swim Suit Case," an attempt to integrate public swimming pools.
They followed the National discourse on Civil Rights, while making changes on a local level.
And in the process, were labeled as Communist sympathizers.
Not sure how that adds up, but these are the facts, Ma'am.

How long must we sing this song?
I believe the Obama Presidency brings most of this non-sense to a complete halt.
But it's the memories that will always live in the American Collective.
Protest
Pictured here are the slayings of the 1970 Kent State University Students As They Protested President Nixon's Invasion Of Cambodia

Then the idiocy of the Vietnam War burst upon the National Scene.
The so-called Generation Gap was real. I often wondered how President Johnson could do so much good (signed the Civil Rights and Medicare Bills), yet continued to escalate the war.
And Nixon was no friend of my generation.
Just the thought of him to this day elicits a negative tingle up and down my spine.
Hmmm--may need some healing work.

Who Killed The President (Kennedy)?
When After All It Was You And Me.
The Assassination Of President Kennedy Was A Horror. We know who did it.
It was a Coup.
So Long Mom, by Tim Lehrer
And Then There Were The Assassinations--
The assassinations created a climate where we all questioned our Government.

The moment President Kennedy was assassinated, my family and all of our friends said it was a conspiracy.
The moment Bobby, Martin, Malcolm and even the students at Kent State were shot down, we all immediately proclaimed a conspiracy.
The American Government, her foreign and domestic policy, all were open to skepticism.
James A. Michener wrote an amazing book about the conspiracy surrounding the Kent State shootings, and having read the book, I was duly impressed by his ability to tie together the missing pieces of that puzzle.
So conspiracy theorists abound.
We came to this honestly.

The 1960 Protest Movement Was Difficult But Necessary
And we are who we are because of it.
How has protest music helped you to gain perspective on the history that we Baby Boomers share?

- Yes - because the lyrics to these songs show the RAW and uncensored feelings/views of the day. These protest songs are "social documents" or "primary documents" about this era; they're very much part of the history of the 1960s.

- This lens brought back so many memories of those times. I hope that current and future generations will not forget the courage of the protesters of the 1960s who brought about important changes and will continue to protest when they see wrongs that need to be corrected.

- I remember so many of the events you are sharing about here and my heart still breaks when I recall the things that have happened and not only that, but, history may repeat itself if there isn't a shift in the collective clarity. I remember a song by John Lennon "Give Peace a Chance" which the first time I heard it was during a march in protest of the Vietnam war.
I found several videos of that song, but, here is one with good quality and all the lyrics http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kg8rlSi5MlA

- I admire the people in the 1960s who protested nonviolently. I was in grade school at the time, but remember some of these things, and of course, read about them later. We take many things for granted today and need to remember our past all the way back to the Revolutionary War.

This Lens Is The Happy Recipient Of The Coveted Purple Star!
Every lens, if done properly, is a lens in progress. Sometimes we just go about any given day, and an idea strikes as to what to add to a lens you've already created! Or an idea sifts through consciousness for the creation of a new lens!
This lens always ranks #1 of all my lenses. Is it because of the nostalgia of the 1960's? Or is it the Keyword research? Or both?
Thank you, Squidoo, for finally honoring this lens with the purple star! It's much appreciated!!
