1965 Ford Mustang Information

Some minor changes to the Mustang occurred at the start of the normal 1965 model year production, a mere five months after its introduction. These cars are known as "late 65's," as opposed to the "early 65's" built from April through September. First, there was an almost complete change to the engine lineup. The I6 engine made way for a new 200 in³ version that produced 120 hp. Production of the 260 in³ engine ceased with the traditional end of the 1964 model year. It was replaced with a new 200 hp 289 in³ engine with a two-barrel carburetor as the base V8. A 225 hp four-barrel carbureted version was next in line, followed by the unchanged "Hi-Po" 271 hp 289. The DC electrical generator was replaced by a new AC alternator on all Fords (the quickest way to distinguish a 1964 1/2 from a 1965 is to see if the alternator light on the dash says "GEN" or "ALT") and the now-famous Mustang GT was introduced. A four-barrel carbureted engine was now available with any body style. Additionally, reverse lights were an option added to the car in 1965. The Mustang was originally available as either a hardtop or convertible, but during the car's early design phases a fastback model was strongly considered. The Mustang 2+2 fastback made its inaugural debut with its swept-back rear glass and distinctive ventilation louvers.

Answer: All C4's are the same regardless of the engine it's bolted up to. The bellhousing could be a problem. Most V8 have a 2-bolt starter, your 6 may have a 3 bolt starter. Check this website out for a little more detail:

You'll need a different kickdown rod. I would double check to see if you need to change the torque converter....

The six-cylinder cars have a four-lug bolt pattern both front and rear end (7.5"). They have smaller 9-inch brakes versus the V-8's 10-inch brakes. Also, the entire steering linkage, including idler arm and tie rods, are much lighter on the six-cylinder vehicle. The V-8 parts will bolt up in place of their six-cylinder counterparts, thus most V-8 conversions include the front end and rear axle along with the V-8 engine. If you decide to retain the smaller components, just remember they cannot tolerate hard usage

Don't forget to get a beefier radiator.

Question: What is the best gear ratio for an 8" differential in a '65 Mustang?
I have a '65 Mustang with an 8" rear end, and the ring gear is history. I am either going to have it rebuilt with new gears, bearings, etc., or buy a whole new third member (possibly adding posi).

I'm not sure of the current gear ratio, but it is probably stock. I know that the gear ratio will affect the performance, and I want something that has some take-off power, but doesn't wind out when I'm tooling down the highway, plus I'd like to keep the mileage from getting too ridiculously low.

I've got a three-speed transmission, and a 4.7L 289 V-8 w/holley 4-barrel carb.

Answer: This is one of those "it depends" answers. If your cam is stock, or a small "RV/Towing" type cam, 3.25s would be my recommendation. This will be a compromise between mileage and drivability and performance. Tire size does make a difference, but the range you can fit under a 65 stang is pretty small, so it probably won't make much difference. Another thing you might want to check out is junkyard manual cars. Manual trans cars typically had lower gear ratios than autos, so you might be able to find a 3.25 or 3.50 rear end and save some dollars. Bigger cam needs lower gears, and at some point a stall converter, due to the fact that the bigger the cam, the higher in the RPM range the motor will make power. Gears are one of those mods that will really make the car get up and go, so you should see a great improvement. I swapped a set of 2.75's in a T bird for 3.50s, and the improvement was incredible. Answer: the original size was 6.95-14, there is no adjustment on the steering, you problably have a bad tie-rod end.

Answer: Refer to the site below for 64 1/2 differences.
You don't say which transmission you have, either a C6 or even a C4 automatic, the 4 speed top loader or the 3 speed. There are plenty of parts available for the excellent Ford 4 speed as it was an excellent transmission, equal to the best of the era. I have included two sites for the automatics. the last is for a top loader.
I only hope you don't have the 170 ci 6 cylinder. This engine was not only a dog but had 4 main bearings and was prone to early failure. The 200 inch 6, in contrast, was a great engine and very smooth. If you have a V8, so much the better.
