Question: 68 Ford Mustang Restoration Questions?
My dad and older brother bought a 68 Ford mustang in good condition , it runs, paint isnt too bad, interior is in good shape. The thing is they are too busy to work on it and just left it at my house. I am very limited to my knowledge of cars, but this one is a sweet ride and even though they are too busy i would like to get it lookin nice. Any suggestions on what i shuold do to the car( and no i cant really sell it, its not mine). I also want to get it raceworthy, so if yall ahve suggestions on that id appreciate it. Im already lookin to do a brake conversion so let me know.
Answer: Start with making an arrangement with your dad and brother on reimbursing you for anything you put into the car. Then inspect the car and take care of any mechanical issues first. Then start restoring cosmetic things that need repair. As you become familiar with the car and its components, you will be able to assess what you want to do to it. Start with mild performance modifications like converting to the disk brake front end, a free flowing exhaust, etc.

Question: Do I need to use a brake proportioning valve on a 68 mustang??
I just change out my front brakes from drums to disc, is it nesacery to installe a proportioning valve, or can go with out one??
Its a 1968 ford mustang coupe with 289 automatic.
Answer: Yes!!! You will not have any control over the differences between the front & rear brakes otherwise. Different distances from the master, etc can cause the rear tires to lock up when you brake.
Question: 68 Mustang: keep stock or overhaul?
I have an original-owner 1968 Ford Mustang. It's a stock 289 forest green fastback, 3-speed stick (nothing fancy). I want to fix it up to look like the Bullitt Mustang, but am concerned it will impact the value of the car if it is no longer factory stock. Will the long-term value be improved or decreased if I make non-stock upgrades (both cosmetic and power)?
Answer: First off what a great car to own and the correct color and body a fastback with a V8. You can do some very easy upgrades that would not affect the value of the car at all if anything make it worth more. You have a 289 which must mean you have an early 68 since most Mustangs have 302's in 68.
I have owned old Ford Galaxies for years and when I modify one I like to use early 60's parts to upgrade it so it is hard to tell if it is a factory part. First off if you do not have dual exhaust up grade to factory 289 dual exhaust that will add to the car for sure. Also add a nice set of 14 inch or 15inch 5 spoke rims that are still available today just like on the Bullit Mustang. This would be an easy and cheap upgrade plus add a nice set of black wall tires and save the stock rims, this is an easy switch. Also factory intake manifolds are still around with upgrades to 4 barrel carb if you don't have one. Another great upgrade replace the points and condenser with a Pertronix Ignitor, any Mustang resto shop has these and very easy to install and no one knows you replaced the old points I have them in all my Galaxies and all use the stock distributor and cap, never know its there but it will run a lot better. They cost about $75.00 and last a long time mine is over 10 years old. There is a lot you can do and still have it look stock and have your Bullit Mustang. Just make sure you have an alarm system.
Question: How do i fix a jumping speedometer in a 1968 ford mustang?
the speedometer in my 68 jumps around within 5 miles of the speed that im going until it hits fourty then it evens out. any suggestions on a cheap way to fix this?
no jack rabbit starts for me...my uncle though is another story
Answer: Those Fix-or-replace-daily Mustangs had a habit of getting a "kink" in the cable at the side of the trans. New cable is the answer.
The problem was caused by jack-rabbit starts, but you wouldn't be guilty of that, now would you.
