The Happenings Of The 70's; The Hits & The Misses

We'll go back to the music, the sports, the television shows, movies, and just about everything else that the 70's had to offer us in the form of entertainment.
You remember the 70's.. don't you?
Back when the music came on vinyl records AND 8-track tapes instead of little plastic chips?
And Jaws, The Exorcist, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre were the scariest movies ever!!
Whether you were glued to the TV watching The Brady Bunch, All in the Family, or American Bandstand, kicked back in your bean bag in your paisley shirt looking for pin-ups in Tiger Beat, or 16, or sitting at the kitchen table licking S&H green stamps for that item you were saving for, there was news and entertainment going on constantly. They were hard years politically and musically for Motown, but they were some of the best when it came to movies, television and songs!
So roll out the shag rug, kick off your platform shoes and we'll rock on through the years! Everything on here has a link behind it. You can watch some of the best movies or trailers to them, watch some funky videos of tv shows and commercials or watch videos to some of the songs we danced to! You'll find news, sports, books and movies under the NEWS headers in the right content table. Everything else is outlined in the left content table. Groovy times!
Far out man! It's a 70's Quiz

TELEVISION SHOWS OF THE 70'S

FROM CARTOONS TO PRIMETIME

When the 70s began, there were televisions in 59 million households. When the decade ended, they were in 75 million. Cable TV, which had been around since the 50s, came of age with subscriptions tripling from 4.5 million in 1970 to 14.1 million in 1979. In 1970, television became more controversial and relevant to society then, than the previous shows of the 60's. Before then, television shows were mainly for family entertainment and depicted the "perfect" nuclear family without the controversial plots that were depicted in later years television programs. Gone were the days of Leave It To Beaver and Father Knows Best with their simple problems.... along came Archie Bunker with his chauvinistic ways and bigotry at its best! Gunsmoke and Bonanza were two of the popular westerns from the 60's that lasted into the 70's. As the years passed by, the shows became even more relevant to society as the taboo of "s.e.x." became a part of the shows with Three's Company. Donna Reed would have been drawing the curtains on that show! Here are a lot of the shows that were popular in the 70's, in no particular order. Some have clips while some are informational only.

TOP POP SONGS FOR 1970-1972

BILLBOARD TOP HITS

Pop rock is a mix of pop music and rock music that uses catchy pop style, with light lyrics over top of guitar-based songs. There are varying definitions of the term, ranging from it being classed as a slower and mellower form of rock music to a subgenre of pop music. Scholars have noted that pop and rock are usually depicted as opposites; the detractors of pop often deride it as a slick, commercial product along with advocates of rock who claim that rock music is a more authentic, sincere form of music. Billboard magazine considers the pop/rock performers or groups from this era to include The Jackson 5, Three Dog Night, Elton John, Diana Ross, Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac, Donna Summer, Billy Joel, and Olivia Newton-John, among others. The Encyclopedia Britannica calls the Bee-Gees an "English-Australian pop-rock band that embodied the disco era of the late 1970s. Whereas, in actual fact, the Bee Gees were topping charts with pop rock in Australia and later overseas from the mid-1960s. A university course on the history of popular music claims that Three Dog Night were "one of the most popular bands of the late Sixties early Seventies; pop rock, singles-oriented sound with soul-influences". read more...

During the 60's and 70's it seemed like every country music star either had a television show or wanted one. Unfortunately many of the shows were seen in only a limited area of the country, but they had some unforgettable moments in country music. Many moments in which country music went in new directions from the roots of country music. They are an important slice of American country music history which should not be forgotten.
Some of these shows can still be seen today if you are able to get The RFD Tv Show on your local cable program or on Direct TV Satellite.

The New Republic has called it "the most successful Black-owned business in American history." Berry Gordy, Jr. launched Motown Records, with "Bad Girl," a collaboration with his friend Smokey Robinson. Motown, affectionately named after the "Motor City," Detroit, would be the label used for group acts, rather than solo artists which were still being recorded on Tamla. The 1960s would be Motown's golden years. In 1969, it signed what would become one of the most popular acts of the 1970s, the Jackson 5. The Jackson 5's first single, "I Want You Back," reached number one on the charts in January 1970. In the mid-70s, Stevie Wonder won three consecutive Album of the Year awards; his Songs in the Key of Life entered the Pop charts at number one. In 1975, a tumultuous year, Barney Ales returned to replace Abner as Motown Records president. An untimely upheaval came when the Jackson 5, concerned that Motown had not been promoting their records sufficiently, signed with CBS. By the late 1970s, many of Motown's original roster of stars, writers, and producers had been courted away by other labels. The business had changed, and the process of making and selling records had become much more complicated. "Three Times a Lady," by the Commodores, was Motown's only Top Ten single for 1978.
