1970's Fancy Dress

Ranked #20,199 in Entertainment, #243,809 overall

Why is 1970's Fancy Dress So Popular?

Those of us who lived throughout the seventies will know that this was an exciting time, Pop Culture was at it's best, and flamboyance was the word of the decade. Being born myself in 1960 meant that I was one of the privileged to witness that 70's decade, from the age of 10 to 19, I truly experienced and lived through what for me can only be described as one of the most influential decades we have ever witnessed for both the music and the fashion industry. Many people claim that the 60's was better, However ask any regular costume party goer and I am sure they will agree that 1970's themed parties are always the best. Simply because the music and costumes provide the perfect combination.

The Music Scene in The 70's

Disco Vs Glam Rock

I have already mentioned that the music scene definitely played it's part in why the 70's is one of the most popular Fancy Dress themed categories, most certainly here in the UK and may well be the case in most countries worldwide. Disco and the explosion that was Glam Rock most certainly gave us a fabulous range of characters to choose from. Lets take a look at just two of the most influential contributors to this era:

Abba
GLAM ROCK

ABBA - GLAM ROCK
This has simply got to be the biggest music influence for any 70's or 80's themed party, Abba and "The Dancing Queen" being recognized as one of the most popular songs played at any 70's party, perhaps because it reached No1 in UK, Germany and Australia, but also reaching #1 in the USA. Abba certainly get my top vote for most popular costume choice for this decade.

Saturday Night Fever
DISCO

SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER - DISCO
Another big influence for creating the popularity of what makes this the best decade for the perfect Fancy Dress Party Theme, was the arrival of "Saturday Night Fever" in 1977, both the film and soundtrack plus the enigmatic charm of Tony Manero (Played by John Travolta) meant that every guy in the disco wanted to be him, and guess what, they still do.

Saturday Night Fever

Did it all Start right here?

The Classic John Travolta Style White Suit

This is without doubt why the 1970's is possibly the best party theme, simply because during the 70's everyone was DISCO CRAZY, and when John Travolta strutted his stuff on the dance floor, millions worldwide flocked to the discos to emulate this iconic style. Years on we now look back and often laugh at the cheesey fashions but there is no doubt about it we LOVE the 70's, when it comes to dressing up for that party theme.

1970's Costume Shoes

Platforms & High Heel Boots

70's Platfom Shes

In the Seventies even the little guys walked that little bit taller, due to the size of the heels they wore, my Mum used to say at least you will never wear the heels out on those my lad, but it's quite possible you will break your neck, you silly little sod get them off, and why the hell have you got cake die in your hair, (private family joke from the Seventies, sorry.). David Bowie Fans will know the significance of that comment, especially from the Ziggy Stardust days.

Well guys if you want to risk breaking your neck then why not check out this selection of Platform Shoes, to give you that all important accessory for your 70's Fancy Dress Costume. Plus some for the ladies too.

TV & Film Influences of the 70's

Popular Costume Choices

Darth Vader Costume

It goes without saying that one of the biggest Film influences of the 70's responsible for creating a huge impact on the costume market is STAR WARS, released in 1977, this classic film and the ones since have kept STAR WARS COSTUMES one of the most popular costume themes on the market today. When you turn up at a 70's theme party dressed as DARTH VADER, many people will forget that this was one of the biggest films of the decade, and question why you are dressed as Darth Vader when everyone else is supporting the traditional flared trousers and platform shoes look. So why not do something completely different and surprise them when you turn up as the Dark Lord himself, especially if you go that extra mile with this classic

USA Fancy Dress Stores

The Top USA Costume Stores Online

When it comes to costumes the USA Stores do have the best choice, and you can almost guarantee that any New costume will hit the US Market before any other. Fancy Dress is Big Business in the USA and online stores are very competitive, especially when it comes to prices. If often pays to shop around and although a price may seem cheaper on one site than on another, take my advice and check the shipping fees.

I have listed some of the USA's biggest players and very little separates them they are in no particular order, I will leave that entirely up to you to decide, but given the choice I would have confidence in buying from anyone of them.

Sometimes it's basically a matter of costume availability..

I thought the 70s produced a lot of rubbish myself, almost as bad as the 80a. But certainly a good era for crazy dressing suitable for theme parties
