The Sounds of 1977

The superstars, the one hit wonders and the fads that made up the music of 1977. Here are the year's Top 10 best selling singles in the UK.

1. Mull of Kintyre

Paul McCartney and Wings

Spotlight on Paul McCartney and Wings

Wingspan (Hits & History)

Amazon Price: $14.99 (as of 12/22/2009)Buy Now

WINGSPAN: HITS AND HISTORY is a great double-disc collection of Paul McCartney's days with Wings and as a solo artist, covering the years 1970-1984.

This is a great anthology that belongs in any serious pop library.

2. Don't Give Up On Us

David Soul

Spotlight on David Soul

Live in Concert 1984

Amazon Price: $9.99 (as of 12/22/2009)Buy Now

I recall some of David Soul's songs vividly, such as Don't Give Up On Us and Silver Lady, my personal favourites when I had them on a very poor quality cassette.

Today, David's albums are hardly available, so if you like his songs, then this concert from 1984 will recall his greatest songs from a time when his career was at its peak.

3. Don't Cry for Me Argentina

Julie Covington

Spotlight on Evita

Evita: An Opera Based On The Life Story Of Eva Peron 1919-1952 (1976 Studio Cast)

Amazon Price: $34.99 (as of 12/22/2009)Buy Now

This is a great recording of this show! It's so simple and uncluttered, and just very interesting to hear, because this is basically what all the later versions of the show have grown out of. It's interesting because the music/lyrics of Evita (Broadway, the movie) have always seemed choppy in parts. There are parts of the show in here that I've never heard before, and while they definitely needed to be cut, they make some of the lyrics make a little more sense and seem less jumpy.

Julie Covington and Colm Wilkinson are great on this (a very young voice of Colm).

If you're a fan of the show, buy this CD! It's sort of interesting to see that even ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER had a point in his career where he didn't overdo all his music!

4. When I Need You

Leo Sayer

20 Greatest Hits

Amazon Price: $19.99 (as of 12/22/2009)Buy Now

Of the 20 tracks on this superb album, only about 11 of these tracks were chart hits in the US or UK. So strictly speaking, this is more of a Best Of album than 20 Greatest Hits.

His interpretations of songs like Heart (the Gibb Brothers) and Unchained Melody are quite good. 20 Greatest Hits is a great album of tuneful, classy and occasionally soulful pop music.

5. Silver Lady

David Soul

Spotlight on Starsky and Hutch

Starsky & Hutch - The Complete First Season

Amazon Price: $16.99 (as of 12/22/2009)Buy Now

Paul Michael Glaser & David Soul really brought out the best in their characters, and you can really identify with them as people. Captain Doby is a boss one just can't help but like.

Although the show screams 70s, it is a nice to see a good quality show that grabs you and keeps you interested.

6. Knowing Me, Knowing You

ABBA

Spotlight on ABBA

The Definitive Collection

Amazon Price: $14.97 (as of 12/22/2009)Buy Now

It is a very obvious thing to see why ABBA has had so much success with their infectious pop songs. It's the melody that has been put into them, along with great songwriting and two beautifully voiced female singers.

This collection covers the obvious hits of the band; including the disco smash "Dancing Queen", and the power pop of "SOS", "Waterloo", and "Mama Mia". Disc one contains the most memorable songs of ABBA, while disc two contains the Euro-disco beats of "Voulez Vous", "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" and "Lay All Your Love On Me". It is easy to listen to these songs all the way through just because they are so good. The voices, the lyrics, and the music are just fantastic and utterly irresistable.

ABBA has what most musicians today don't have: Great melody.

Spotlight on Donna Summer

The Journey: The Very Best of Donna Summer

Amazon Price: $11.99 (as of 12/22/2009)Buy Now

This album is a terrific compilation of Donna Summer's greatest hits. The album has the disco songs that made her a smash success, such as "Love To Love You Baby," "Hot Stuff," "Bad Girls," "Last Dance," and "Dim All The Lights." You also get her classic duet with Barbra Streisand, "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough);" as well as "Heaven Knows."

There are twenty (yes, twenty) songs on this single CD, but there is a second bonus CD included inside the jewel case with remixes of some great songs including "Hot Stuff," "I Feel Love," and "You're So Beautiful."

The remastering work was well done; the sound quality is excellent. This highlights the richness, sexiness and electricity in Donna's voice. It is exciting and always leaves the listener wanting more!

Spotlight on Elvis Presley

The Essential Elvis Presley

Amazon Price: $14.99 (as of 12/22/2009)Buy Now

If you were stranded on an island and could only take one Elvis CD with you, this would be the perfect one. There is not a bad song here, and it is a pleasant listening mix of all of his music.

You get the blues, rock, rockabilly, gospel, movies and some live concert music. One of the best arrangements of songs of all the CDs that have been released since his untimely death.

If you grew up listening to Elvis music it will bring back so many memories. Play it once and you will not want to play anything else for a long time. You will be hooked. This CD brings to mind what all the fuss was about.

9. So You Win Again

Hot Chocolate

Spotlight on Hot Chocolate

Every 1's a Winner: The Very Best of Hot Chocolate

Amazon Price: $7.99 (as of 12/22/2009)Buy Now

Hot Chocolate, remarkable for being the first multi racial British group to have continued success, made a carefully constructed, catchy brand of funk and soul music. Everyone knows You Sexy Thing because of its inclusion in The Full Monty, but most of the other 18 songs are well worth hearing too.

Hot Chocolate, fronted by the songwriter Errol Brown, were at their best when their songs were emotional pop narratives, like Emma, It Started with a Kiss, and the anti-racist polemic Brother Louie. The major hits So You Win Again and the eponymous song are great, funky tunes.

Spotlight on The Brotherhood of Man

Brotherhood of Man: Golden Classics

Amazon Price: $12.97 (as of 12/22/2009)Buy Now

Best known in the USA for their hit UNITED WE STAND, this group was originally led by the eternally youthful voice of Tony Burrows. Later on, they reformed under Tony Hiller as a more ABBA-esque pop group - won Eurovision - and were very, very popular round the world.

If you haven't heard them beyond UNITED WE STAND, pick up this collection! You won't be disappointed, especially if you're an ABBA fan. Nifty stuff that will lift your spirits and make you smile!
