The Sounds of 1979
The superstars, the one hit wonders and the fads that made up the music of 1979. Here are the year's Top 10 best selling singles in the UK.
Spotlight on Art Garfunkel
The Best of Art Garfunkel
Amazon Price: $14.99 (as of 01/02/2010)![]()
A great collection of Art's solo stuff, which includes his 2 brilliant chart No. 1s "I Only Have Eyes For You" & "Bright Eyes."
There are quite a few songs off "The Art Garfunkel Album" such as the romantic "I Believe When I Fall In Love It`ll Be For Ever" & "99 Miles From L.A." All in all it`s a great album, with a splendid selection of songs. So if you like chill out tunes, after a stressful day, buy this album.

Blondie - Greatest Hits
Amazon Price: $8.99 (as of 01/02/2010)![]()
For casual fans and completionists, "Blondie-Greatest Hits" is a must have. It features their best known tunes, and offers up some excellent songs to newer fans as well. Hardcore fans probably already have these songs in their collection, but I would suggest they give this hits package a shot, as the digitally remastered songs sound better than ever. Highly recommended.

List Price: $23.49
Cliff Richard is quite possible the biggest pop music legend in the UK. Strangely unknown in North America, Cliff has been rockin' and rollin' since the fifties! On two CDs, covering dozens of songs (all hits on the UK charts), this is a testament to his success.

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Boomtown Rats
Amazon Price: (as of 01/02/2010)![]()
This is a great, but limited, overview of the music of a band every bit as important as The Clash, that has been unfairly ignored. This CD was compiled from votes from an online poll that fans of The Boomtown Rats should have had no problem finding. Now, we need one more thing. How about a re-release of all of the Rats albums? It's far too long overdue.
5. When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman
Dr. Hook

Collection
Amazon Price: $22.99 (as of 01/02/2010)![]()
List Price: $14.98
As with all of Dr Hook's early output, this album of magical content from one of Rock's all time zany bands is priceless and timeless. I'll just encourage you to buy it.
Spotlight on Gloria Gaynor
I Will Survive: The Anthology
Amazon Price: $16.99 (as of 01/02/2010)![]()
Truly, one of the best artists from the disco era. You will enjoy and treasure this CD from the Queen of Disco.
Having grown up with this music, I must say that if you are a disco fan, you need this CD in your collection! Most, if not all of the songs are sure to bring back all those times dancing into the night!
7. Are Friends Electric?

Premier Hits
Amazon Price: $13.99 (as of 01/02/2010)![]()
List Price: $15.98
Basically this is a great compilation, particularly if you remember "Cars" and "Are Friends Electric?" and were impressed by the innovative electronic weirdness. Very cool stuff - and there are a number of other less well known, but very good tracks, on the CD also.

Great album that gives an overview of Roxy Music between 1972 and 1982.
10. One Day At A Time
Lena Martell
She had released a number of standards throughout the 1970s on the Pye record label and was a popular draw on the cabaret circuit, but her gospel tinged country cover of the song written by Marijohn Wilkin and Kris Kristofferson, proved to be an unlikely success at the height of disco and new wave, topping the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in November 1979.
Her follow up single failed to chart, so she has the dubious honour of being classified as a one-hit wonder.
Although out of the limelight for a while while nursing her sick mother, Martell has now returned to the music industry, and is still touring the UK. She has recently released a few albums on the ScotDisc label, which have been very successful.
Her audience's favorite still remains "One Day At A Time".

British Music in 1979: The Wiki
This is a summary of 1979 in music in the United Kingdom, including the official charts from that year. 1979 saw the beginning of a few trends in British music. The start of the New Romantic movement and synthesiser bands began to gather momentum (although both these trends had to wait for the eighties for real growth) and the first rap hit in the UK for the Sugar Hill Gang. The 2 Tone movement also emerged with early work from bands like The Specials and Madness. Disco music was still the most popular music of the year, although showed signs of dying out in later months. 1979 remains the biggest-selling year ever for singles sales in the UK.

- This is the year I was born and what a great year, obviously I was not of age to appreciate them then but I have grown fond of them through the years, and Watership Down is one of my favorite films, what a moving piece of music. 5* and a favorite, I will keep this lens close.

- What a year!
This was the year I discovered Pink Floyd. Near the end of 1979, I went from listening to "pop" music such as Gary Numan and Blondie to listening to "album" rock.
At the time, it didn't seem like there was room for both types of music in my life(the music we listened to was connected the groups we hung around with in school), today I embrace them both, along with many others!
