Living In The 80's

The 80's. No way has it been almost 25 years since high school graduation. It is hard to believe how fast time flies.

Most generations over the last 40 years or so have had names. Those of us that grew-up in the 80's, especially those of us that graduated in the early to mid 80's) were really in between generations. We are too young to be in the baby boomer/yuppie generations and too old to be in the gen-x generation. However during our time we experienced, we participated and defined more culture and sub-culture revolutions than any other generation.

Our generation was more than seeing the end of the cold war, the invention of the Rubix Cube, Swatch Watches and Super Mario Brothers. What made our generation even more distinct form other generations was the music, the movies and most importantly the social (or anti-social) attitudes.

The anti-social anarchist attitudes that the punk rockers reveled in also gave way for people to be themselves as much as possible and not really care about what other people thought of us (ok, so we did care), we craved to be individualistic. In the 80's we witnessed the rise of punk rock, new wave music, nerds, stoners, preppies and the very beginning of MTV (believe it or not it use to be 24/7 music videos).

There were more new bands and styles of music to emerge in the early 80's than any other decade ever. There also seemed to be more movies that were based on high school and pop-culture than ever.

We saw life and death in technology. Vinyl LP records were being replaced by CDs. VHS format video tapes won out over Beta format video tapes. Laser Disc movies were emerging. The home PC was on the rise. Home video games were starting to replace board games. And don't forget that video killed the radio star.

The amazing, but cool thing is that all those clothes we wore in the 80's, all the music we listened to in the 80's are all coming back. Retro-80's is cool. Those of us that lived in the 80's, despite what our kids say, we are cool again. I'm not old, I'm Retro.

For all of us that lived the 80's and those that have no idea what you missed, this lens is for you. Read and reminisce in your mind the life and times we had. Fell free to vote for some your favorite things in the lists, add a favorite album or movie you had from the 80's and by all means leave your favorite memory, story or comment about the 80's in the guestbook or group discussion below.

I was much more a fan of the music than the TV shows, I guess! Punk and new wave were fresh and brought new energy to the scene. But there was some great rock, too, and of course some truly excellent movies! 5* and a fave, plus rolling this to 3 lenses: Unforgettable Fire, Great Family Movies, and Non-Kid Music Your Kids Won't Hate

Oh no! Punk and New Wave? LOL Since you also have Styx and Scorpions then we can be friends. :) And I'm with you 100% - 80s music was some of the best music ever! Even if we don't really have a name for our generation. Thanks for the comment on my lens. They go well together!

Wow! We are, like, the same age! Thanks for this perspective. Now I know where my anti-social anarchist attitudes came from!
