1986

I created a Lens a while ago on 1985 music, largely because this was the year in which I was born. It was a lot of fun to put together so I thought I'd make it a bit of series and go through each subsequent year too. So this is 1986 in number 1 hits!

This was the year that the UK and France announced plans for the Channel Tunnel and the year that Prince Andrew married Sarah 'Fergie' Ferguson. It was also the year of the devastating Chernobyl Disaster and the year that the Challenger Shuttle disintegrated on launch, killing all on board. Another terrible event that year was the kidnapping of British Journalist, John McCarthy in Beirut. He would be held hostage for a massive five and a half years.

It wasn't all bad news though. 1986 also marked the launch of the Russian Mir Space Station and surgeon in the UK made a massive breakthrough in successfully completing the world's first triple transplant (heart, lung and liver).

The big films of the year included Top Gun and Crocodile Dundee.

Let's take a look at 1986 in music based on the UK charts....

January 1986 Number 1s

  • 1Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls. The year started with a number 1 that would be remembered for years to come. It's 2011 and I still love this!
  • 2A-Ha - The Sun Always Shines on TV. The second new number 1 of the year was another awesome track!

80s music is my favorite! This is a great lens--I really enjoyed remembering the songs of that year. I love "Lady in Red", and "West End Girls".
