Christian Literature

Christian Audio Books contain the different Christian literature genres.

- Christian non-fiction
- Christian fiction
- Christian poetry
- Christian theatre

Scripture

It does not fall within the strict definition of literature, that's why The Bible is not considered literature. Never the less, the Bible has from it's first existence to now been treated and appreciated as literature. Particularly the King James Version has long been considered a masterpiece of English prose, whatever may be thought of its religious significance. Several retellings of the Bible, or parts of the Bible, have also been made with the aim of emphasising its literary qualities.

The language used and the way the bible stories are told have changed from the first handwritten bibles to todays bibles on many different media. Today's tendence to make the Bible more accessible by editing it's content to make it an easy read and even transform some of the events into todays times can certainly be considered literatur. Not all christian appreciate these literary efforts, though....

Christian Non-Fiction

Since the invention of the printing press non-fictional literature has been used for the dissemination of the Christian message, and also for disseminating different viewpoints within Christianity. The tract (a small pamphlet (or with a more modern term: a small brochure) containing an explanation of some point, or an appeal to the reader) was in use at the time of the Reformation and continues to be used even today.

Christian Fiction

Christian fiction can be harder to define than Christian non-fiction. Christian themes are not always immediately apparent. It is often argued, that the works of a Christian author are not necessarily also Christian fiction. For example while there are undoubted Christian themes within The Lord of the Rings, many would not consider this to be a work of Christian fiction, to the contrary: Conservative Christians feel that such books are not good and should not be read by Christians. For many centuries fiction has been written based on Christian ideas. Early examples include Paradise Lost, Dante's Inferno and The Pilgrim's Progress.

Christian Books

These books are about the Christian belief, Christian Living and about Christianity: I have not read them all, but find that the comments by some readers seem to sum up their content and value quite well:

Faith in the Byzantine World (Lion Histories)

Covering the period between 330CE and 1453CE, this text offers the opportunity to explore this fascinating empire and to understand the central role of Christianity in its development. The author begins by providing an outline of the history and structure of the Byzantine Church, and then looks at key aspects of its outward expression, including liturgy and daily worship; doctrine; monasticism; icons and iconoclasm; architecture, art and iconography; relations with the western Church; and mission and expansion. The book ends by assessing the lasting legacies of the Byzantine Church, especially in the areas of liturgy, spirituality and art.

Simply Christian: Why Christianity Makes Sense

I come from a background of nominal Presbyterian Christianity followed by many years in my adult life of fundamental, Pentecostal Christianity. My early years provided me with a dull version of Christianity; my later years the other extreme. Burned out from the emotionalism, the overemphasis on the sensational and what I see as the move toward the gospel of materialism cloaked in Christianese, I had just about given up on Christianity as a whole, settling instead for my own version.

I stumbled across this book in my local bookstore today and was drawn to it as I really enjoy N.T. Wright's ability to take on modern criticism without ever wavering in his faith nor compromising its essentials. He has a way of stating the essentials simply without bogging them down in highbrow theological language. I started the book and could not put it down.

Within a few pages a wave of peace and comfort washed over me. Rather than critiquing Christianity as expressed today, he opted instead to focus on its essence, to keep the story focused on what is right with Christianity and how it makes sense, even - or especially - today.

He never sets out to prove that it is right; he sets out to prove how it is salvific. And he does so in a calm, reasoned voice, unafraid to bring awareness to modern day critical scholarship yet remaining true to the fundamentals of the Gospel message. The book is brief and is an easy read with Wright's concise and powerful prose.

His descriptions of salvation, the kingdom of God, the mission of Jesus and, especially relevant to me coming from a Oneness Pentecostal background, the power and the mystery of the Trinity, resonated more deeply than I was prepared to experience. I almost cried. It literally recharged my wavering faith with a new sense of vigor. Not only is Christianity relevant in today's world, it is essential.

If you are looking for a refresher in why it is you remain a Christian or if you are, like me, tired of the excesses passing for Christianity today or are just looking for a soothing discussion to remind you of what you already know, I cannot recommend this book enough. I haven't been so moved by a book in a long time.

Christian Theology: An Introduction (4th Edition)

"This book is an extraordinary achievement, a tour de force which will introduce thousands of students to theology as a discipline with a rich heritage, a clear sense of its own methods and norms, and an elusive yet articulate understanding of Christian language." Reviews in Religion and Theology

"This publication is a seminal text for the student or teacher of Christian Theology. Its readability and general presentation make it a very accessible text for those with a general interest in this area of academic endeavour. In essence this is a text which would be a useful and valuable resource for the teacher or student of theology. For school-based practitioners it is a very sound teacher reference text. It contains in one volume a very thorough treatment of the key developments in Christian Theology over the past 2000 years." Religious Education Journal of Australia

"This is one of the most user friendly textbooks I have come across drawing attention to important connections between different histories and human attempts to give expression to Christianity. I highly recommend this edition of McGrath's book to anyone looking for a place to begin the study of Christianity as a major World Religion." Dr Isabel Mukonyora, Western Kentucky University

Becoming A Contagious Christian

This proven action plan will show you how to impact the spiritual lives of friends, family members, co-workers, and others.

[...] This book is loaded with practical application that Christians can almost immediately put into practice. In addition, the book offers helpful tips on sharing your faith in succinct and compelling ways, and really hammers home the theme of 'authenticity' and evangelism as a process, rather than the gospel raid approach that presses immediately for a decision and commitment to Christ without doing much of what is needed to truly resemble authentic and caring evangelism. These contributions are welcome and are things that evangelicals of all theological stripes should pay attention to and generally adopt. Hybels calls for flexibility in evangelism that is person and even situation specific, and while this might rub some people the wrong way, I do think a good case can be made that effective evangelism cannot be reduced to a standardized approach that refuses to interact with the uniqueness of each person we encounter. [...] J. F Foster

The Meaning of the word Christian

The word Christian comes from Greek 'khristianos', from 'khristos' meaning "the anointed."

In the (Greek) Septuagint version of the Hebrew Bible, khristos was used to translate the Hebrew 'messiah', meaning "[one who is] anointed."

The first known usage of the termkhristianos can be found in the New Testament in Acts 11:26: "the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch."

The name Christian was first used to denote those known to be teachers or leaders of the church (saints). They were disciples and followers of Jesus Christ. The other two New Testament uses of the word also refer to the public identity of those who follow Jesus. The Jewish king said the Apostle Paul had almost persuaded the king "to become a Christian" (Acts 26:28). Writing in 1 Peter 4:16, The Message translation, the Apostle Peter encouraged believers who are abused "because you're a Christian, don't give it a second thought. Be proud of the distinguished status reflected in that name!"

The earliest recorded use of the term outside the Bible was when Tacitus recorded that Nero blamed the "Christians" for the Great Fire of Rome in AD 64.

"Christian" also means a member or adherent of a church or other organized group within Christianity. As an adjective, the term may describe anything associated with Christianity or even remotely thought to be consistent with Christianity, as in "the Christian thing to do."
.

A Christian is a person who adheres to Christianity, a monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, who Christians believe was the Son of God and had been prophesied in the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible."BBC ? Religion & Ethics ? Christianity at a glance." BBC [http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/christianity/ataglance/glance.shtml ]

The Christian Cross - Religious Symbol of Christianity

The Christian cross is the best-known religious symbol of Christianity. It is a representation of the instrument of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is related to the crucifix (a cross that includes a representation of Jesus' body) and to the more general family of cross symbols. The cross is a crucifix without Jesus' body on it.
