Writing Poetry Is Creative Freedom at Its Best
This is odd.
I'm a poet with a Ph.D. in chemical engineering. So, you may wonder how did I happen to write poetry?
The answer is: I began writing in a journal on January 4, 1999. Since then I have filled 59 journals. And in the course of that writing, I've written over 1,800 poems.
Here are some favorites. Enjoy.
By the way, that's Olivia Felini helping support my creative writing.
The photo was taken by my wife.

Poems
Creativity
safe childlike play,
finding what you want
by not looking for it,
floating free
in a void of
darkness and light,
being less to
become more,
leaving your shell
so you can expand
soft and vulnerable
within yourself,
being born to
emerge someplace
unexpected
with such grace
it all seems obvious
once you arrive.
Conflict
Tension.
Pain.
Magnificent
engines
of life.
They move us forward.
Nasty
comfort
fools us
into staying still.
The catch,
however,
is that
life becomes hell
when
you are
the cause of
conflict, tension, pain.
What Every Cat Knows
as if you were
larger than they are
and
they will respect you.
Walk among peers
as if you were
smaller than they are
and
they will destroy you.
Candle Light
eating dinner by candle light at home.
In the dark days of winter
two small flames brought summer inside.
She always moved the candles
placing them close to her plate.
Golden softness bathed her face
and misty warmth filled her eyes.
I felt deeply touched until I discovered
she liked candles because she was cold.
Be Grateful They Don't
2 thereto, with a sound
3 mind I solemnly declare the
4 following cheerful words for
5 the edification of scholars:
6 Be us all grateful that
7 attorneys (hereafter
8 referred to as THEM) don't
9 (i.e., do not) write poetry
10 of any kind, which includes
11 all text, with or without
12 rhyme, commonly referred
13 to as poems but not
14 necessarily excluding other
15 written works which may
16 have poetic merit
17 because their ponderous
18 predilection for specification
19 would guarantee that any
20 interpretation could only be
21 resolved through litigation.
Communication
at the same time.
One talks about this.
The other about that.
And to make it worse
the one who says this
hears only about this,
the other only about that.
Thus, they learn about
what they already know.
One gains more of this.
The other more of that.
Two conversations
without communication.
Just a reiteration of this
and a repetition of that.
Abstract Poetry
over stale toast in broken cups
lime lollipops stick to freshly
faded wallpaper in dim hallways
yesterday's herbal tea waits like
unemployed golf caddies for the news
elegant eye lashes wipe forgotten sins
from fog covered windows in autumn
pretentious ambiguity stuns patrons of
trendy coffee shops that serve wine
The Web
of decisions.
No matter how I move
I stay where I am.
In the corner of a window
a fly struggles to be free.
The difference is this:
The fly's in a web
built by a spider
and I'm in one built
by me.
A Guest in My Home
but I don't own this place, no way.
I certainly live here, that's true,
but I'm more like a guest, sort of.
I buy all of the supplies, that too,
but I don't shop for me, not first.
I choose the furniture, of course,
but I always sit last, oh my.
I'm the largest one here, by far,
but I don't make the rules, not me.
I suppose I could change, I know,
but I'd rather have a cat, I would.
Nature
without
worrying if
the river
is ready.
The Dream
You woke up in a dream
that somehow slipped itself
into the middle of your day.
What a shock it was
to find yourself being
supremely brilliant.
So, you stopped it all.
Pause right here and
go back to the dream, for
it's the dream that's real.
And life is the fantasy.
That moment of splendor
was the real you set free,
an extraordinary gift to all
as you were meant to be.
Go out and be a sunrise.
Dance with butterflies.
Sing to sunbeams.
Run through rainbows.
Live in continual surprise
as you enjoy the discovery
of how very special
you really are.
Peace
peace more profitable
than war,
then perhaps
conversation would be
more courageous than combat
then perhaps,
forgiveness would be
more common than retribution
then perhaps,
cooperation would be
more commendable than conquest
then perhaps,
compassion would be
more normal than judgment
then perhaps,
humanity would be
more important than nationality
then perhaps,
kindness would be
more human than hate
Lessons from Nature
ponder
if it might be
difficult
to grow.
Birds never
ponder
if it might be
dangerous
to fly.
Trees never
ponder
if it might be
drudgery
to grow.

- Your poetry is so beautiful and meaningful. I identified so deeply with your words. I do hope your wife appreciates the lovely being she is married to. I know the cat does.

- By the way, I also have a PhD in heterogeneous automotive catalysis - could be shortened to chemical engineering, at a push

- This is fantastic, you are a true creative spirit Steve. Poetry like this gets straight to the heart of things and leave you feeling you've learned something that you needed to know.
I see that in addition to her beauty and many talents, Olivia Felini is also a patron of the arts. All this and she has you perfectly trained too! I am so impressed with this cat (and yes, I've always been an easy target for the silent meow).

- You really write wonderful poetry. "What Every Cat Knows," "Communication," and "Peace" especially struck a sympathetic chord in me.

- I love your grasp of poetry ... contemplating this passage ...
Walk among peers
as if you were
smaller than they are
and
they will destroy you.
That's about cats, right?

- Yes, this is something that every cat knows. It's also a good lesson for people. Thank you for your comment. I'm a huge fan of your lenses.

- This is wonderful stuff, Steve! "Be Grateful They Don't" came as an especially pleasant surprise - very fresh, very clever, very poetic. You have a great sense of rhythm; I'm convinced that engineers as a subspecies generally do have the music of poetry in them - just too often lack the courage you mention, so don't put it into word form. I enjoyed this collection very much.

- Steve, you have a wonderful gifting and I was courageously enjoying! I can see how you have been taken by your poetry and 1800 in 58 journals seems to be a start for you with much more to come. You have a marvelous way of saying a lot in a concise manner with your poetry and then leaving us to discover the unwritten between the lines....I'm a poetry loving Squid angel who would bless this many times....
Your Communication reminded me of the lines to a song that is little known called I think, This and That....I believe in this, you believe in that....this and that are keeping us from loving one another. Now I'm remembering I Could Say That Its Up To You by Paul Luthi who lives in my area.
I could say that its up to you, that I have tried.
You could probably say the same thing too, that your have tried.
But when one tries, the other hides...
and when one hides, the other tries...
And, when I think I of how I've been unkind....I hurt deep inside.
But with your hand in my hand and the good Lore up above....
We'll make it right, we'll make it right.

- My dear! I do believe you have inspired me to write poetry again ... I did a lot of poetry writings in my teens and early twenties. Oh, love the phrase: "predilection for specification" ... Happy Holidays!
