Ratatouille - The Movie

Ratatouille (rat-a-too-e) is a 2007 computer-animated family film produced by Pixar and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The film was the eighth movie produced by Pixar, and was directed by Brad Bird, who took over from Jan Pinkava in 2005. It was released on June 29, 2007 in the United States, to both critical acclaim and box office success. The title refers to a French dish which is served in the film, and is also a play on words on the species of the main character.

Ratatouille - The Movie

One key point: if you can get over the natural gag reflex of seeing hundreds of rodents swarming over a restaurant kitchen, you will be free to enjoy the glory of Ratatouille, a delectable Pixar hit. Our hero is Remy, a French rat (voiced by Patton Oswalt) with a cultivated palate, who rises from his humble beginnings to become head chef at a Paris restaurant. How this happens is the stuff of Pixar magic, that ineffable blend of headlong comedy, seamless technology, and wonder (in the latter department, this movie's views of nighttime Paris are on a par with French cinema at its most lyrical). Director Brad Bird (The Incredibles) doesn't quite keep all his spinning plates in the air, but the gags are great and the animation amazingly expressive--Remy's shrugs and nods are nimbler than many flesh-and-blood actors can manage. Refreshingly, the movie's characters aren't celebrity-reliant, with the most recognizable voice coming from Peter O'Toole's snide food critic. (This fellow provides the film's sole sour note--an oddly pointed slap at critics, those craven souls who have done nothing but rave about Pixar's movies over the years.) Brad Bird's style is more quick-hit and less resonant than the approach of Pixar honcho John Lasseter, but it's hard to complain about a movie that cooks up such bountiful pleasure. --Robert Horton

Ratatouille

Once again, the creative minds behind Pixar have created enchantment ... possibly their best film in years. Everyone loves Ratatouille...even though he is a rat in the kitchen.

Indeed, the idea of rats in an upscale restaurant would normally have us run for cover. Nevertheless, the movie successfully blends the themes of the Ugly Duckling with Cyrano de Bergerac to come up with a fantastic story. Remy is a simple rat with an extraordinary nose. His idol is a great French chef who lectures on the Food Channel. "Anyone Can Cook" is his mantra. So when Remy and his rat family have to leave their homes, Remy accidentally ends up in the very kitchen of this great Chef. Alas, the great chef has passed away, and the food standards are falling, as well as the Michelin stars. To reverse this trend, Remy - the rat - teams up with a clueless scullery boy in the kitchen to whip up some wonderful recipes. Indeed, the rat's food creations are a hit with the customers. The problem, as in all Cyrano stories, is that no one knows who is really behind those wonderful recipes. And most important, will the most difficult restaurant critic in Paris condemn or praise the food that Remy prepares?

Everything about this film is wonderful...the streets of Paris are recreated in rich colors and exquisite detail. I haven't seen a European city look this good in an animated film since Disney's "Pinocchio." Oh my, even the French copper pots look authentic.

I laughed hysterically throughout the film...particularly the times when the rat conceals himself in a chef hat and rides the garbage boy like a cowboy on a bronco. Please don't miss this treat. Highly recommended. -- Gerard D. Launay (Berkeley, California)

Ratatouille Soundtrack

As befits an American movie set in France, this score starts off by quoting the French national anthem; fortunately, Michael Giacchino quickly turns off the cliche tap and gets the fun started.

The composer, best known for his work on Alias and Lost, shows he can do light and nimble--and elegant, too: not many animated/kiddie movies have scores that evoke vintage Henry Mancini ("Losing Control"). "Wall Rat" is a good example of Giacchino's MO: It begins with a slightly melancholy melody played on the cello; that thread soon gives way to flutes and piccolo violins, which of course evoke the scampering of little feet--and that's when the bongos come in.

Actually, those delicious bongos pop up regularly, flavoring the jazzy feel of "Cast of Cooks" or the tango-style "Special Order." Even when Giacchino uses that universal signifier of all things Gallic, the accordion, he does it sparingly ("A New Deal," "Ratatouille Main Theme") and with flair. And of course, Giacchino throws everything but the proverbial kitchen sink in the sprawling "End Creditouilles."

Note that this instrumental CD starts off with the quirky pop song "Le Festin" (the feast) by the wonderful French vocalist Camille. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Pixar's musical legacy continues to grow
Since the company began producing features-length movies with "Toy Story" over a decade ago, Pixar's legacy as animation geniuses has flourished.

Growing right alongside that legacy is another: that of producing extremely memorable music for the movies.

If you want further proof, look no further than "Ratatouille," which is a great movie with a great score. Composer Michael Giacchino proves again that his style can melt seamlessly into just about any kind of film. This score could easily have gone way over the top in its "Frenchness," given the setting -- instead, Giacchino provides just enough Parisian styling to keep us grounded; otherwise, his music serves to put us in the mindset of Remy the rat, who just wants to be all that he can be. Thus, the music is a sort of psychological journey, and it's that aspect that makes the CD so successful. It aurally replicates the experience of the film's storyline, which, I think, is one of the best compliments a score CD can be paid.

Especial praise needs to be set aside for the gorgeous song "Le Festin," a Giacchinooriginal sung by Camille (whom I had never heard of, but would like to hear more of). As far as I'm concerned, this song immediately joins the ranks of timeless Disney classics, and if at least a nomination at next year's Ocars doesn't result, I will be calling foul. - Bryant Burnette "Bryant Burnette" (Tuscaloosa, AL)

It shouldn't be surprising that such a charming and clever movie is matched by a similarly attractive score.

Definitely worth a purchase, the disc features songs that are playful, reflective, jazzy... sometimes all at once. As another commenter rightly noted, one of the songs -- "Anyone Can Cook" -- is particularly notable for how it tugs at your heartstrings and evokes the more sensitive moments towards the end of the film.

In contrast, "Le Festin" (the opening track) is an delicious and quite hummable ditty of a theme that'll have you smiling every time.

Oh, and listen to that amazing trumpeter saucily shine through in the jazzy-and-multi-mood'd End Creditouille (the credits-music that kept nearly all theatregoers in the show I attended quietly in their seats 'til the very last moment)

So, given that I clearly love so many of the tracks on this CD, why only four stars? Alas, a number of the tracks just don't have that repeat-listenability thing going for them. It's not a CD I'll regularly listen to from start to finish.

But, oh, the rest of the tunes! Such a pleasure, bringing back great memories from the film. They'll be listened to again and again.

Perhaps anyone can cook. But not everyone can make such engaging compositions and arrangements, and for that, I salute Mr. Giacchino :) - Adam Lasnik "Frim Fram Sauce Extraordinaire" (San Francisco, CA USA)

Hang on for a madcap adventure deep in the bowels of Ratropolis, where Roddy meets the resourceful Rita (Kate Winslet), the rodent-hating Toad (Ian McKellen) and his faithful thugs Spike and Whitey (Andy Serkis and Bill Nighy).
003- Princess Mononoke

This anime epic from director Hayao Miyazaki made critic Roger Ebert's list of 1999's 10 best films. Infected with an incurable disease, Prince Ashitaka (voiced by Yoji Matsuda) travels to the Far East in search of a cure and finds himself caught in a battle between the forest's animals and a mining town. Princess Mononoke (Yuriko Ashida), a human raised by wolves, leads the animals, but higher powers intent on killing may prevail.
004- The Invincible Iron Man

Billionaire inventor Tony Stark digs up more than he bargained for when he unwittingly unearths the Mandarin, an evil entity buried for centuries in an ancient Chinese ruin. To protect himself and save Earth's citizens from the Mandarin's destructive force, Tony invents a high-tech suit of armor. The character of Iron Man (also known as Iron Knight) was created for Marvel Comics by superhero legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
005- Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Faced with almost certain destruction of her planet's natural resources, warrior princess Nausicaa rallies her people against an evil queen's rampaging army in an effort to give her homeland a new lease on its future. Hayao Miyazaki directs this environmentally conscious anime that transports viewers to a magical place -- the Valley of the Wind -- where the ultimate showdown between good and evil will play out.
006- Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

A deadly disease and a band of brothers threaten to destroy the planet in this thrilling computer-animated sequel based on the popular video game. Now a recluse, ex-soldier Cloud Strife runs a delivery service from Tifa's bar, which also doubles as a safe-haven for children stricken with the lethal affliction. But Cloud and his friends are called back into action when the mysterious Kadaj and his brothers show up on the scene.
007- My Neighbor Totoro

Legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki provides a stunningly realistic portrayal of life in the country. She quickly discovers, however, that she can't take her abilities for granted.
010- Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

It's an Armageddon scenario with a Greenpeace subtext when Dr. Aki Ross races against time to keep phantom-like alien invaders from destroying what's left of life on Earth. Stunning animation is the hallmark of this futuristic movie that pits Ross against her arch human antagonist (the hawkish General Hein), who would like to blow the aliens -- and everything else -- to kingdom come.
011- Grave of the Fireflies

Named Best Animated Feature at the 1994 Chicago International Children's Film Festival, this film proves that not all anime tales are pixie-dust fantasies or brutal sci-fi standoffs. Orphans Seita (voiced by Tsutomu Tatsumi) and Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi) fight for survival in post-World War II Japan, but society is harsh. Soon, they come to the somber conclusion that they can neither escape the hardships of war nor find enough food to survive.
012- The Cat Returns

Young Haru rescues a cat from being run over, but soon finds it's no ordinary feline; it happens to be the Prince of the Cats. And in recognition of Haru for saving his life, the cat brings her to the Kingdom of Cats … to be his bride! But Haru's feline friends Muta and the Baron hatch a plan to rescue her from this unusual fate. Think Alice in Wonderland … with kitty litter. Hiroyuki Morita directs this anime follow-up to Whisper of the Heart.
013- The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury

Aeon Flux creator Peter Chung steps even farther out of the proverbial animation box with this edgy new series about escaped convict Riddick (voiced by action star Vin Diesel). The story picks up where the series left off in the movie Pitch Black: Riddick has been abducted and is being kept aboard a spaceship by money-hungry bounty hunters, who must deal with his overwhelming wrath. He's determined to be free again, even if he has to kill.
014- Batman: Gotham Knight

Batman takes on Deadshot, Killer Croc and other deadly foes in six anime-inspired short films. Together, the interlocking tales bridge 2005's Batman Begins and its 2008 sequel, the Dark Knight, and illuminate our anti-hero's troubled psyche. The powerhouse writing team includes Oscar nominee Josh Olson, Batman Begins writer David S. Goyer, comic book writers Greg Rucka and Brian Azzarello, and "Batman Beyond" creator Alan Burnett.
015- Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence

Writer-director Mamoru Oshii's animated thriller concocts a complex follow-up to his monster hit, Ghost in the Shell. It's now 2032, and machines and people have grown so similar they're virtually interchangeable. The fate of the human race hangs in the balance, and a robot with human tendencies, Batou, is the only one who's able to decipher why humanity has lost its allure. When he figures out the answer, he'll face life's ultimate questions.
