Or Activity Songs For Teaching

On this page you will find many activity songs information, books, links and more!

Starting school the one thing that scares kids most is mathematics. Some have an innate inclination to work with numbers and quantities, and this comes quite natural for them. Relax, there's a pretty natural; solution for that- the counting songs!

Kids action songs and children music are the best activity for parents and small kids to do together.

Which is more, activity songs or action songs for kids might be used also to teach words, body parts, fine movements and many more things like animal sounds, names, and lots more.

But how early is not too early? I believe there's no such age. You can talk to your child since the moment it is born, and numbers are not only for counting!

I invite you to read further and see which are the best kids action songs found all over the Internet!

Activity Songs-A Natural Way To Communicate

When having a small child it is pretty embarrassing at times to figure out proper ways to communicate with it. Children action songs are the first instruments to use besides speech- allowing sending an emotional message through your tone and voice.

Children love soothing music and sounds and singing becomes more and more important as age increases since the child begins to grasp not only the sound and melody but also the meaning in words.

In this way songs become a unique instrument to teach kids different things. Songs can be used to develop vocabulary, for learning body parts, animal sounds and lots more. Besides, as you will see below, action songs for english teaching are also a great instrument to work with kids.

Especially counting (as well as the alphabet) is easily introduced through songs-and even better by means of action songs.

Action songs are songs involving not only singing but also doing repetitive simple actions with different parts of the body. In this way kids associate numbers not only with one word which being abstract concept to an extent they would remember difficult. Instead by associating it with an action they use the kinesthetic abilities of body and thus provoke the kinesthetic intelligence (see H. Gardner's theory on multiple intelligences). Another advantage of action songs is they are age appropriate for small kids, keep them amused and provide lots of fun.

ABC Action Songs For Preschoolers

The Best Activity To Learn The Alphabet

The ABC action songs have rather little action in them, consisting of repeating the letters in their alphabetical order. Yet they still teach kids something specific which is why I tend to think they belong here too.

The most popular one-"The ABC" goes like this:

ABCDEFG
HIJKLMNOP
QRS and TUV
W and XYZ
This is called the alphabet-
Which we never must forget!

There are also others similar rhymes helping kids to remember the alphabet.

THE GREEN BOTTLES

The first counting song in English for me was "Ten green bottles". I was not a baby, but already a student at an English language school. It appears songs are not just for kids- we were studying numbers in English and "Ten green bottles" was used by our English teacher in the best way. We sang it loudly- and unstoppably- it's a good thing that we were in a prep class and classes were in the school's boarding house and not with the rest of the school.

Here's what it's like if you haven't heard it:

Ten green bottles hanging on the wall
Ten green bottles hanging on the wall
And if one green bottle should accidentally fall
There will be nine green bottles hanging on the wall.

Nine green bottles hanging on the wall
Nine green bottles hanging on the wall
And if one green bottle should accidentally fall
There will be eight green bottles hanging on the wall.

And so on till there is none green bottle on the wall!

Apparently people used to sing about the mysterious bottles long ago- I came upon a site stating the song is 6 centuries old! Back then, it sounded like that:

"Syxthene boetell gryne
Yhangen, Yhangen
Yhangen, Yhangen
Syxthene boetell gryne
Doonfal won
Syxthene boetell gryne
Yhangen, Yhangen
An . . ."

Body Parts Activity Songs For Toddlers

(Action Songs for kids on body parts)

Another action songs type allows kids to learn about different parts of the body. Kids have lots of fun repeating after the parent or teacher movements with hands, fingers, pointing to eyes, nose, elbows, knees etc. Besides they provide with an opportunity to exersice a bit too!

Body parts action songs emphasize how objects have different names and ways to be referred to. These are usually the first words children begin to understand-"these are your hands", "here are your toes", "show me your fingers". Simple and accessible through visually present objects they are the best way to start teaching kids rather than through introducing more abstract concepts about good or bad which happens at a latter age.

A famous action song including dance and naming hands and feet is the popular "Hokey Pokey". The phrase is supposed to be connected to "hocus pocus" but there are also other versions of the story about its origin. Here is the full story of the Hokey Pokey song, and next you'll see a short video.

Silly Action Songs!

Those should be each child's favorite! They don't teach anything but just give kids an opportunity to interact with the parent or teacher. They have little words, are easy to remember and the obvious lack of sense makes children laugh and develop a sense of humor (I suppose)!

Kids Love Them

Children love so much action songs that they make you repeat them over and over-something that will never happen with the lessons later!

Religious Activity Songs

(Christian Action Music)

I have to admit I knew little about those-but the Internet provides lots of opportunities to find texts, downloads and disks with Christian action songs. Here is an example I found at "Kididdles.com":

All God's creatures have a place in the choir,
some sing low, some sing higher,
Some sing out loud on the telephone wire,
Some just clap their hands, or paws, or anything they've got now!...

These teach kids basic things about God, faith and Bible stories. Although not so popular there are parents who insist on their children's religious education and Christian action songs are one of the best ways to start early on this.

ANIMAL ACTION SONGS

Similarly to the ABC songs these don't use much actions but also use repetitive "actions" to learn animal sounds: my first and most favorite is the known to every child "Old MacDonald's farm":

Old MacDonald had a farm-
e-i-e-i-o-
and in his farm he had some cats-
e-i-e-i-o..."

and so on and so on. Another example is "The black sheep":

Baa ba black sheep have you any wool?-
Yes yes little boy three bags full"

etc.

Children love animals and understand better this type of songs which immitate different sounds and animals. This is a way for the child to get to know about farm animals, pets, and less often about animals in the wild. Children have better understanding when domestic animals are concerned because they can be more often exposed to meetings with those while wild animals are accessible rather through stories mainly.

This are great! I'm teaching a pre-school story time at one of my homeschool co-ops and am in need of a few more action songs. You can tell spring is here (at least in FL it is) because the kids are all wiggly. Blessed and liked.
