Auburn Blacked Out!

By 1340, the Black Death had descended over Europe, wiping out 60 percent of its population - 50 million people. By the 4th quarter of the 111th edition of the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry, Georgia players, dressed in black jerseys for the first time ever in the modern era of the rivalry, were dancing on the sidelines to rapper Soulja Boy's "Crank It" blacking out Auburn, 45-20. By comparison to the Black Death's effects on Europe, Auburn got off easy!

From ESPN - Georgia wears black jerseys for crucial game against Auburn

Dated November 10, 2007

ATHENS, Ga. -- After urging their fans to wear black, the No. 10 Georgia Bulldogs did too for their crucial game against 18th-ranked Auburn on Saturday.

The Bulldogs warmed up in their usual red home jerseys, and even sent out their four captains for the coin toss in red. Then the entire team charged onto the field -- wearing black jerseys trimmed in red.

From ESPN - No. 10 Georgia 'blacks out' 18th-ranked Auburn 45-20

ATHENS, Ga. -- Now that he's no longer calling plays, Mark Richt has more time to think of ways to fire up his players.

The Georgia coach came up with another winner Saturday.

Richt sent out the No. 10 Bulldogs in black jerseys for the first time in the modern era, and boy did they look good in their new color. Matthew Stafford threw two touchdown passes, Knowshon Moreno had 100 yards rushing for the fourth straight game and Georgia kept alive its Southeastern Conference title hopes with a 45-20 victory over 18th-ranked Auburn.

From ESPN...Georgia's new star brings back memories for team he'll face Saturday

Dated November 2, 2007

ATHENS, Ga. -- When the Auburn coaches watch film on Knowshon Moreno, it all looks very familiar, like someone who used to carry the ball for the Tigers.

The shifty feet. The speed to the corners. The surprising power on the inside.

Even the number -- 24, the same one worn by former Auburn star Carnell "Cadillac" Williams.

From ESPN...Cox, AU try to erase rough memory against UGA

Dated November 8, 2007

AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn quarterback Brandon Cox didn't torture himself with repeated viewings of his worst game.

When you complete four passes to your teammates and the same number to the opposing defense, once is enough. The painful memory of last year's 37-15 humbling remains acute for Cox and No. 18 Auburn going into Saturday's rematch at No. 10 Georgia.

Was the 2007 Auburn-Georgia game the first time the Georgia Bulldogs wore Black Jerseys? No, It wasn't. According to David Ching, on his web site dated Monday, November 12, readers sent him a couple of photos of Georgia's Frank Sinkwick wearing a Black jersey from the 1940's. Here is link to the original posting. According to one anonymous poster in response to the article, the Georgia Bulldogs wore Black Jerseys in the 1943 Rose Bowl.

From ESPN...Preview of the 111th Edition of the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- About this time a year ago, Matthew Stafford was a mess of a freshman quarterback. He wasn't always sure where to throw the ball. He was winging it with the play-calling. And his passes kept going to the wrong team.

Then -- suddenly -- it all clicked.

The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry

Auburn and Georgia have met 111 times, as of 2007, in what is known as 'the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry' in the sport of college football. The Auburn-Georgia rivalry is unlike the annual contest between Auburn and Alabama; It is a true competitive interstate civil war, brother vs. brother. Where as the Iron Bowl is about setting an annual family dispute. Of Auburn's major rivals whose games were once played at neutral sites, Georgia is the ONLY school to come to Auburn without argument. In fact, both Auburn and Georgia used a home-to-home Auburn-Georgia series as the base for a major stadium additions. The rivalry is tied with Oregon-Oregon State as the seventh-most played series in the nation. The purpose of this site is to provide the reader with a history of the rivalry and to be a single source reference for sports historians on information pertaining to on the Auburn-Georgia rivalry on the web.

War Eagle: The Symbol of Auburn University

Auburn University has been graced with much tradition around our mascots. To the outsider, our traditions may at first be confusing and to a naive rival, who make jokes such as "Why do you say "War Eagle" and your team are the "Tigers". But for new Auburn fans or rivals wishing to educate themselves, I offer this clear explanation of our mascot and other symbols of tradition.
