I'm really looking forward for the games and below are events that I will be following closely. If you guys need any quick information related to any events you would like to follow just put a request in the comment form. I will try to get it for you if I have the capacity to grab it.

My favourite events:-
  1. Track And Field
  2. Men's 100m - Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay are battling for supremacy and the current world record (9.72 sec) held by Usain Bolt is definitely in jeopardy.
Men's 110m hurdle - New world record (12.87sec) holder Dayron Robles is trying to hold off host favorite Liu Xiang.
Men's 200m - Usain Bolt again trying to beat the untouchable world record (19.32 sec) set by Michael Johnson in the 1996 Olympics.
Men's 400m - Jeremy Wariner is trying to gain his supremacy after losing to his USA compatriot recently. Maybe with good competition they both could break Michael Johnson world record (43.18 sec) too.
Women's Pole Vault - Current world record (5.04m) holder Yelena Isinbayeva is in trouble after strong performance showing by USA pole vaulter Jennifer Stuczynski when she recently made a new USA national record (4.92m).
Women's High Jump - Blanka Vlasic once again will show everybody else that she is the queen of high jumping.

  3. Soccer
  4. Men's Soccer - Brazil is looking for their first ever gold medal. Pretty unusual reality if you take a look at their achievement in the World Cup Soccer. Perhaps Ronaldinho could do something to make it happen. Anyhow Argentina with Sergio Aguero and unconfirmed Lionel Messi is not to be denied.
Women's Soccer - The defending Olympics Champion the USA women's team will battle it out with current world champion Germany and the Brazilian team which are led by the gifted soccer player Marta.

  5. Tennis
  6. Men's Singles - Roger Federer is once again try to revitalize this year season campaign. Anyhow No I in waiting Rafael Nadal will try to show everybody else that he is the new king of tennis. Hopefully his recent loss to Novak Djokovic will not break up his confidence.
Women's Singles - Ana Ivanovic will have an uphill battle to become Olympic champion even though with the absence of injured Maria Sharapova. Perhaps it is once going to be the moment for the recent Wimbledon champion Venus Williams.

  7. Swimming
  8. Men's Events - Michael Phelps is trying to outswim the previous gold medal haul record of 7 set by Mark Spitz in 1972 Munich Olympics.

  9. Gymnastic
  10. Women's Gymnastic - World Champion Shawn Johnson from the USA is trying to prove her new status is not a fluke. Anyhow her teammate Nastia Liukin is among the top gymnasts who are going to challenge her for the all-around title.

  11. Basketball
  12. Men's Basketball - USA men's team is trying to grab the gold medal back after to losing to Argentina in the 2004 Sydney Olympics semifinal. With Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul and LeBron James in the squad the chance looks very bright. They will play their first game against Yao Ming and the Chinese team on August 9 at 10:15am EST.

  13. Badminton
  14. Men's Badminton - No 1 Lin Dan and No 2 Lee Chong Wei will once again trying to win their first Olympics gold medal. Anyway they have to battle it out with defending Olympics Champion Taufik Hidayat.

How Beijing Won The 2008 Olympics Host Bid

Ten cities submitted bids to host the 2008 Summer Olympics that were recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), five of which made the IOC Executive Committee's shortlist. The games were awarded to Beijing, China on July 13, 2001. The other shortlisted cities were Toronto, Paris, Istanbul and Osaka. Beijing won an absolute majority of votes after two rounds of voting, eliminating the need for subsequent rounds of voting. IOC delegates and the media identified a number of factors in its favor, including the size of the country, improvements in Chinese anti-doping enforcement, and its close loss to Sydney, Australia eight years earlier. In that bidding process, which chose the host city for the 2000 Summer Olympics, Beijing led every round of voting but lost in the final round to Sydney by two votes.

A number of politicians and non-governmental organizations criticized the Beijing bid and its selection due to concerns about China's human rights record. In response, supporters of the Beijing bid suggested that hosting the games might lead to "progress" on human rights and other issues. Some IOC delegates also expressed concerns about air pollution and heat in Beijing during the summer, and its effects on athletes participating in the games. In order to address such concerns, the Beijing bid included plans to reduce both air and water pollution in the city in advance of the games.

Fact File On Beijing Olympic Stadium

Beijing National Stadium (), also known as the National Stadium (?????), or colloquially as the 'Birds Nest' (??), is a stadium in Beijing, China. The stadium was designed for use throughout the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

Located in the Olympic Green, the $423 million stadium is the worlds largest steel structure. The design was awarded to a submission from the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron in April 2003, after a bidding process that included 13 final submissions. The design, which originated from the study of Chinese ceramics, implemented steel beams in order to hide supports for the retractable roof; giving the stadium the appearance of a "Bird's nest". Ai Weiwei, the artistic consultant, played a critical role in pushing the design to have unique Chinese characteristicshttp://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4298689.stm. The retractable roof was later removed from the design after inspiring the stadium's most recognizable aspect. Ground was broken in December 2003 and the stadium officially opened in June 2008. A shopping mall and a hotel are planned to be constructed to increase use of the stadium, which has had trouble attracting events, football and otherwise, after the Olympics.Barbara Demick, [http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-beijing-bust22-2009feb22,0,5564951.story Beijing's Olympic building boom becomes a bust], Los Angeles Times, February 22, 2009, Accessed February 25, 2009.

Fact File And History Of Olympics Games

The Olympic Games are a major international event of summer and winter sports, in which thousands of athletes compete in a wide variety of events. The Games are currently held every two years, with Summer and Winter Olympic Games alternating. Originally, the ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD. In the late 19th century, Baron Pierre de Coubertin was inspired by Olympic festivals to revive the Games. For this purpose, he founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894, and two years later, the modern Olympic Games were established in Athens. The IOC has since become the governing body of the Olympic Movement, whose structure and actions are defined by the Olympic Charter.

The evolution of the Olympic Movement during the 20th century forced the IOC to adapt the Games to the world's changing social circumstances. Some of these adjustments included the creation of the Winter Games for ice and snow sports, the Paralympi...

The Summer Olympic Games or the Games of the Olympiad are an international multi-sport event, occurring every four years, organized by the International Olympic Committee.
