2008 Hyunda Santa Fe Introduction

The Hyundai Santa Fe is a compact/mid-size crossover SUV based on the Hyundai Sonata platform. It was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV, released at the same time as the Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute and Pontiac Aztek. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because, despite receiving criticism from journalists for its obscure looks, the SUV was a hit with the American buyers. The SUV was so popular that at times, Hyundai had trouble supplying the demand. The Santa Fe quickly became Hyundai's best seller and contributed to Hyundai's success in the United States. As of 2007, the Santa Fe falls between the Tucson and the related Veracruz (which was preceded by the Terracan).

The 2nd Gen Hyundai Santa Fe was awarded 2008 Consumer Reports "top pick" and was among the top 10 vehicles for 2008 unveiled in the magazine's issue. The magazine's annual ratings, based on road tests and predicted safety and reliability, are considered highly influential among consumers.

2008 Hyundai Santa Fe FAQ

Question: What do you think of the new 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe?
Anyone who owns one or knows about them. Might buy one.

Answer: Check if you need SUV or 4 X 4 (not all SUV are 4 X4)

Where I live, China-made SUV (not 4 X 4) are generally cheaper than Korean-made SUV, if you do not need 4 X 4

However, Japanese-made SUV, 4 X 4, may be more fuel-economical for high mileage Owners

Do compare all models available that suits your vicinity/usage to decide

Question: Is this a good deal for a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe SE?
This is what they are giving us
24150 - 2500 (mfg rebate) - 750 (loyalty rebate) = 20,900
We have a trade in valued at $6000 - but payoff is 7780
Calculation for total loan - 20900 - 6000 (trade-in) + 7780 = 22680

Is this right or a good deal? Thanks!

Answer: I agree with the 1st post, you can do much better. You have only lowered the MSRP by using rebates that are paid to the dealer anyway, where's your negotiation to lower the price? I agree that you should be able to get a minimum of $1000 and maybe even $2000 additional price decrease. You should also check nada.com and kbb.com to see if you are getting a fair value on your trade in. If you want to save even more money you could look for a 2007 Santa Fe with 20,000 miles on it and probably save another $5000-$7000.

Question: New 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe trouble accellerating/braking?
I just bought my new 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe 2 weeks ago, and all was well until about 2 days ago. It started acting up when I try to accellerate...it feels as if it is jerking into gear, or more like it is braking on its own. It seem to be straining until I get past 30 MPH, and then it seem to be ok. But then again, soon as I take my foot off the pedal, it is almost like I am applying the brake as the car slows down quickly - instead of coasting to a stop. Almost like a "grabbing" sensation....
Does anyone know what this could be? Its driving me crazy - as the car drove like a dream before this started. I am taking it in on Monday to have it looked at, but I am afraid they won't understand what I am talking about. This vehicle only had 6 miles on it when I got it...do you think it needs to be tweaked? Could something be majorly wrong? Help!!!?

Answer: Hard to say if there's something major wrong, but no question that is not normal at all and you noticed the sudden change. It sounds like an issue with the Transmission or ECU more than anything else. I hope you will post a followup later today if they diagnose the problem, would be interesting to see what they found.

Question: Is it normal for a new 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe to blow blue/black smoke in the morning?
I leased a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe in June and noticed about a month ago when it started to get cold outside in the morning, it puffed blueish black smoke and now even when the car is warm it smokes. The transmission also stays in first until 30mph and then kicks in hard to second gear. Is that related? The dealer said the smoke is normal since it is a new car and only has 4800 miles and needs to be "broken in" but I don't believe it. The dealer also said I must be driving the car to hard if the transmission kicks. I feel because I am a woman they are taking advantage of me. My brother advised me to stay away from Hyundai. Should I bring the car to another dealer? Is that normal?

Answer: You have a book that came with your car stating who to call if the car is not repaired. Look up the numbers and start calling. I have two Hyundai cars and let me tell you the same as the others here, that is not normal with the engine or transmission.
The next time you get a new car, find a better dealer who will fix your car.

Question: Did we get a good deal on our new 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited?
My wife and I just bought a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited 2WD. The cash price was 38662, we made a 400 dollar downpayment and recieved a 3500 rebate, had a 700 dollar trade in which they added 1000 dollar cash incentive too. This leaves 23062 to pay over 72 months at 7.99% interest at 408.12 a month. Did we get a good deal?

Answer: Your interest rate is higher then normal due to the long loan length, you may consider getting a new loan from http://www.eloan.com for your local bank for around 6.5% over 60 months, 72 months is too long to be paying for a car.
You didn't mention if you had any option packages, but you must have since the base retail price of the Santa Fe Limited FWD is $28,445. Lets assume you got a touring package with a retail of $3100, +$725 freight, - $3500 factory rebate and you get a price of $29,020 prior to any negotiation. So, its sounds like you got the price down to $28662 a discount of only $358, I think you could have gotten it for another $2000 off that price, so it was not a good deal based on the numbers I have listed here as your purchase price and package. Does your cash price include sales tax, in MD that would be $1700 on a vehicle like this.
Bottom line, you paid what you paid and now need to enjoy your new Santa Fe and be happy to know that you got a very nice SUV regardless of what you paid.

Question: 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe or 2008 Chevrolet Equinox????????
I'm about to purchase a car and i'm stuck between these two. Both are pretty much the same in price and have the same features. I'm kinda leaning towards the Santa Fe because i like the style. Need your advice/previous experience. Thanks!

Answer: Santa Fe all the way

the Equinox is based on the old Saturn Vue, the interior is cheaply made, the engine is rough and gets poor mpg. the handling is clumsy and the turning circle is huge., the Pontiac Torrent is it's almost identical twin.

the Hyundai is more refined Esc and side air bags are standard, the ride is good. the 2.7 liter engine is adequate and if you need more power an optional 3.3 liter V6 is available.

Question: How does Hyundai Bluetooth Work? (Santa Fe 2008)?
Does the bluetooth get integrated into the dashboard? Does it go over the speakers? Or is it one of those ugly after market options that is stuck to the ceiling with a poor speaker and mic?

Answer: The Bluetooth is a POI (port installed option) All dealerships will be getting these kits in the next few weeks.

They are actually installed in the compartment that holds the sunglasses. Once installed, the sunglass compartment can't be used. The compartment contains the speaker and also the microphone.

It is a fairly good system that allows you to store up to 7 different phones (i believe it's 7).

The sound does NOT come out of the radio. It does sound pretty good coming from the sunglass compartmnet.

Question: Keys for Santa Fe 2008 lost?
I'm inquiring about a couple things related to 1 question. We lost the 2 keys that we were given when we purchased the New Santa Fe 2008 and to my knowledge I don't think that those keys were any type of special ones as with my Nissan car the master immobilizer key had a small blue chip in the side of it and the Hyundai keys were just plain looking keys. Was this vehicle suppose to be supplied with such a key and what did it look like? My question is what to do if both sets of keys are lost what does one do to get a new key cut and WORKING as the dealer said he needs the master key and the vehicle yet we have know way to drive it there or give them any key? Thanks for your help it's much appreciated as I've been reading manuals and searching with no luck,

Answer: The keys to your Santa Fe are not coded with a chip of any kind. They are simply keys with a plastic head. The remote keyless entry is the theft deterrent in most Hyundais. You should have received a key code with your keys when you bought the car. It's on a black plastic tag and was hopefully attached to your spare key when you received the books/extra keys, etc. If not, call your dealer with your VIN #, he is able to give you the key code and may be able to cut the key if they have a key-cutting machine. If he said he needed a master key, ask to speak to the manager. If you get the key code, you can go to most any locksmith and they can cut the key from the code. If you lost the remotes, you may have to get the vehicle to the dealer to have a new one programmed to the vehicle.

Question: Which is the better purchase value? 4-year old Honda vs new Hyundai.?
Hi,

I'm in the market for a car, and I've narrowed it down to two choices & trying to determine which of the following is the best value... (all prices are in Cdn$). In either case I'll be selling my existing car for roughly $5000.

Option 1: Lease a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe. 0% for 4 years. Car goes for $29,500 + tax. $5000 from old car towards it. Leaves me with payments of about $310/month for 4 years. I get 24,000km/year (about 15,000 mi/year). 5 year / 100,000km (62,000 mi) warranty. At the end of the 4 years I'd have the option to buy it out for just over $10,000. If I go over the 96,000km / 60,000 miles I pay 10¢/km (16¢/mi).

Option 2: Buy a 2003 Honda Pilot with 100,000km (62,000 mi) on it for $14,000. Again, 0% interest, and $5000 from the old car goes towards the cost, reducing the price to $9,000. Which works out to monthly payments of $188. At the end of the 4 years the car is mine. No warranty obviously.

I very much appreciate your opinion. Thanks!

Answer: I would go for the used Pilot. I don't know if it's the same in Canada as in the US but try checking out Kelly Blue Book and do a little research. Which one has better resale value? Which one has better crash test ratings? Would you rather own your car after you pay off the loan, or have to extend the lease or buy it when the lease is up or lease something else? Which one did you enjoy driving more? Usually when you purchase a used car from a dealership you can purchase a warranty as well.
