The New China

Since there will be the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing China, we want to learn more about China. The New China.

Did you know China is changing incredibly fast? It is not the way you used to think of China, with peasants in straw hats. China is already a leader in technology and innovation -- not just manufacturing.

China is already among the world's biggest economies, and it's growing fast. It's among America's major creditors, and, some say, an emerging strategic rival. It's one of the world's biggest exporters and, potentially, the world's biggest market for goods and services. And hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing China will only enhance this.

But China also has serious problems, with human rights, workers rights, political expression, freedom of movement, inequality, environmental issues and more.

Whether you see an awakening China as an opportunity or a threat, there's no doubt it will be a major player in the 21st century.

From Chinese companies' bids to take over U.S. companies to Beijing's decision to scrap its currency's peg to the U.S. dollar, there are many significant developments in the new China, including the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing China!

2008 Olympics at a Glance

The 2008 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, were a major international multi-sport event that took place in Beijing, China, from August 8 to August 24, 2008. A total of 11,028 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competed in 302 events in 28 sports, one event more than was on the schedule of the 2004 Games. Three nations participated in the Olympics for the first time. China became the 22nd nation to host the Olympic Games and the 18th to hold a Summer Olympic Games. It was the third time that the Summer Olympic Games were held in Asia, after...

Much of China Doesn't Feel Connected to 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing

"I tried to write a letter at the end of last year to be a volunteer for the games but they said they prefer students from the universities in Beijing," says a 23-year-old woman from a farming community about an hour outside Changsha. She is the first of her clan to attend college, but says volunteer positions at the Olympics only go to students of top universities.

While China is rushing to get ready for the 2008 Summer Olympics, for millions of Chinese in the interior of the country, far away from Beijing and other cities on the east coast, the Olympics will have little relevance to their lives.

"We know many big preparations are happening in Beijing through the TV and newspaper," says a student. "It is not a common topic of conversation among the students because we cannot do anything for it and it just seems kind of far from us."

"It is something that only the people in cities around Beijing care about," says a 22-year-old university student in Hunan province.

His sentiments are common among young people in China in 2007. It seems that instead of uniting the country behind a common goal, the Olympics have only widened the gap between interior China and its eastern seaboard.
