A List of 2008 Reasons to Elect a Progressive President

Starting back in 2005, the people at Irregular Times began a impressive project. They made a pledge that, by the end of 2007, they would assemble 2,008 reasons to elect a progressive President in 2008.

This pledge came with a wager. If the Irregular Times writers could not finish this list by New Year's Day 2008, then they would write a check for $2008.00 to every Republican candidate still in the race at that time. As progressives, they did not want to give their support to Republican politicians, so that wager provided a lot of motivation to get the list of 2008 reasons done on time.

Still, as 2007 drew to a close and the 2008 presidential election heated up, it seemed that the list might not get done. With just a few hours left in the year, the Irregular Times team reached the target.

Now, in May 2008, the Irregular Times is at last releasing a book based on this list, at its Irregular Books catalog, its first book of the 2008 presidential campaign season, 2008 Reasons to Elect a Progressive President - Volume One and Volume Two.

Don't You Mean 2008 Reasons to Vote Democrat?

Isn't voting progressive the same thing as voting Democrat?

The title and focus of 2008 Reasons to Elect a Progressive President were chosen very carefully. The book focuses on the goal of electing a progressive President, not a Democratic President.

This focus was necessary because, sadly, not all Democrats are progressives. Some are downright antiprogressive. For proof of this, go look at the legislative scorecards for the House and Senate at the Progressive Patriots web site. You'll see that some Democrats have voted more in favor of George W. Bush's right wing agenda than against it.

The writers at Irregular Times were determined to write a political reference book that would promote a coherent progressive vision for America, not just a partisan promotion of whatever politician happened to gain the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. There is an entire section, in the second volume that deals with the need to reform the Democratic Party in order to make it more progressive.

Why is the 2008 Reasons Book In Two Volumes?

This list is more than a simple list

Although we call the 2008 Reasons to Elect a Progressive President a list, it's really much more than that. The reasons are, whenever required, accompanied by sources that prove the point. Each reason is also given as full an explanation as is required by the subject matter, so that most reasons are more like essays than bullet points.

The resulting book is a political reference for progressive activists and political junkies interested in the 2008 election. It's a collection of information, organized by subject matter, so that people on the ground can build the arguments they need to convince other voters that the time really is right for a progressive President of the United States.

This political reference book totals 791 pages - an impractical number of pages for a paperback book. So, the book was split in two. Volume One covers the topics of:
  • Community
  • Economy
  • Education
  • the Environment
  • Freedom

Volume Two deals with the following subjects:
  • History
  • War and Peace
  • Democrats
  • Republicans
  • Values
  • Does Size Matter?
