I showed him Squidoo, and needed to make sure that the world was notified by me that this is here!!! Check out the web page "LivGreen" Magazine to find out more!

Environmental Impact of Dapers

The Case for Potty Training

Welcome to the current state of potty-training in the United States today. Thanks to the convenience of disposable diapers and misguided advice from pediatricians to wait until children ask to be trained, the average age at which training is completed has risen to an all-time historical high (over age 3) and is continuing to climb!

This delay in potty training is taking its toll on the environment. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 7.26 billion pounds of disposable diapers end up in US landfills every year, with each diaper estimated to take up to 500 years to decompose. What's more, according to National Geographic, the number of disposable diapers used in one year in the United States alone (18 billion) laid end to end would circle the world 90 times! And, unfortunately, many experts believe cloth diapers have different, but equally undesirable consequences.

In reaction to the rising age of potty training and the environmental impact of diapers use, parents are seeking "greener" alternatives.

Armed with the knowledge that babies in many countries around the world today are potty trained during infancy, a small group of highly motivated parents and professionals became advocates of what is now termed "Elimination Communication" (also known as the "Diaper Free Movement" or "Infant Potty Training"). With this approach, parents can train infants within months of birth by holding a diaperless infant over a pot or sink and making a "shhh" sound to trigger elimination.

This is only a portion of the article: Author Information

10 Reducing - Reusing - Recycing Tips

A few reminders about recycling...maybe a few new ideas!

1. Use a water filter and a water bottle - this may decrease or totally eliminate your need for plastic water bottles.

2. Try to find and use high recycled content in everything from printer paper to office chairs.

3. Make art from your recyclable materials.

4. Recycle your electronics: TVs, Computer CPUs and Monitors, Old Cell Phones, Batteries (for your small electronics and vehicles), Offer it to the local Technical Center if you don't want it and it needs to be spiffed up then they can train students and possibly sell items they sell to increase funds for the programs.

5. Choose reusable alternatives to disposable items. A few examples include: cloth rags vs. paper towels, washable plates vs. paper plates, mesh washable coffee filters vs. paper filters.

6. Put left over food or beverages in a re-usable container vs. disposable (tin foil, plastic wrap, sealable bags).

7. When shopping if you are making a small purchase don't take a plastic bag (if you need to, use that plastic bag for a small waste basket in your home instead of buying small bags) or bring your own bag along.

8. Purchase items in bulk whenever possible. You save money and on packaging waste.

9. Reduce water use whenever possible: turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth, scrape food off of plates before putting in dishwasher instead of rinsing, keep drinking water in the refigerator to keep it cold instead of running the tap to get the cold water.

10. The Direct Marketing Association's (DMA) Mail Preference Service lets you opt out of receiving unsolicited commercial mail from many national companies for five years. When you register with this service (for a $1 fee), your name will be put on a "delete" file and made available to direct-mail marketers. However, your registration will not stop mailings from organizations that do not use the DMA's Mail Preference Service. To register with DMA's Mail Preference Service, go to www.dmachoice.org.
