Events that will change our Mock Draft
upcoming events - and previous events
P Prior to the NFL Draft in late April... players go through evaluations and change value. Simultaneously, teams go through personnel changes and their needs change. Here is a list of some events that have yet to occur and events that have occurred and how they impacted the draft.Free agency - February 27th - Where the top free agents land and how teams fill their needs will directly affect what that team does on draft day. For instance, a team like the 49ers have several pressing needs - OLB, FB, RB (bruiser), WR, and Safety. If they get an offensive tackle and a safety in free agency... they are likely to select a outside linebacker, bruising running back, and a wide receiver high in the draft.
The NFL Scouting Combine - February 18th - 24th - the scouting combine provides teams with the chance to interview and discover what physical talents each one of the 325 players invited possesses. Here is a top ten list (NFL.com) of players that can dramatically change their draft status with a good performance at the combine.
The Senior Bowl - An all-star game where only seniors are invited. It was held in Mobile, Alabama in late January. It is a great opportunity for the players to show they are better than the competition because they are going against the best of the best. In addition to the game, the practice is a great opportunity for the players to work with NFL coaches and get a feel for what the NFL will be like. Also, it allows coaches to evaluate how the player responds to their coaching style. This year, Jacksonville and Cincinnati coached the two teams in Mobile.2009 NFL Mock Draft
Updated April 24th 2009
Picks 1 - 10
1. Detroit Lions - Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia*6-3 | 237 lbs. | Junior
Tampa Bay, FL
New Coach, New GM, New Quarterback - The Lions restart their organization by building around a franchise QB. Matthew Stafford is the choice over Sanchez because of Sanchez's lack of experience and the fact that Stafford is overall the better quarterback.
Update: 3/1: Even with people saying the Lions should wait to select a quarterback to groom for the future. (because they wouldn't be allowed to sit a #1 pick for 16 games on a 0-16 team). A tackle or Aaron Curry may be the safer pick, but a Quarterback, if they feel he is the right fit, can drastically change a franchise.
2. St. Louis Rams - Jason Smith, OT, Baylor6-5 | 305 lbs. | Senior
Dallas, TX
previous pick - Micheal Crabtree - WR - Texas Tech
Others - Andre Smith
After picking up a solid center in Free Agency, it is clear the Rams are attempting to solidify their offensive line for the future. By selecting Jason Smith, they receive a prototype left tackle which they can groom at right tackle until Orlando Pace retires. There remains a possibility of Micheal Crabtree here if his pro day goes well.
3. Kansas City Chiefs - Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest6-3 | 247 lbs. | Senior
Fayetteville, NC
previous pick - Mark Sanchez - USC
Like the Lions... New head coach, New GM, New QB. Aaron Curry is a possibility if the Chiefs see Tyler Thigpen as their future but Scott Pioli and Todd Haley agree he is not the answer. They select the best QB available - Matt Cassel. The Chiefs found their quarterback but it was not through the draft. They sent a 2nd round pick to the Patriots for Cassel. He is reunited with Scott Pioli and will be running Todd Haley's offensive system.
Now that they have their QB where do the Chiefs go at 3? They may pull the trigger on Aaron Curry here at 3, or they may go offensive tackle. I believe they will go with Aaron Curry. The most sure thing in this draft. And the numbers don't lie, Linebackers have proven to make imediate impacts their rookie seasons. Just look at some of the previous defensive rookies of the year.....
2003 - Terrell Suggs
2004 - Jonathan Vilma
2005 - Shawne Merriman
2006 - DeMeco Ryans
2007 - Patrick Willis
2008 - Jerod Mayo
4. Seattle Seahawks - Mark Sanchez, QB, USC*6-3 | 225 lbs. | Junior
Mission Viejo, CA
previous pick - Eugene Monroe - OT - Virginia
Others - Michael Crabtree
Sanchez is the trendy pick here at 4... it makes alot of sense for the Seahawks from a longterm standpoint but I can't justify it. The Seahawks are looking for a low risk prospect, they have an aging but quality defense, and with Matt Hasselbeck they have themselves a proven Quarterback. With Eugene Monroe or a impact defensive player, and a clean bill of health they could take back the NFC West from the Overrated Cardinals. But that's my point of view... from various sources the Seahawks have said they would be interested in taking a Quarterback; therefore, Mark Sanchez will be taken fourth overall
5. Cleveland Browns - Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech*6-3 | 214 lbs. | Sophomore (RS)
Dallas, TX
previous pick - Aaron Curry - LB - Wake Forest
Others - Brian Orakpo
The Browns will be ecstatic if Curry Falls past Kansas City at 3. Cleveland has lacked a pass rush for a good period of time. But with rumors surrounding the departure of Braylon Edwards the Browns attempt to get a for sure wide out at 5 in Micheal Crabtree. If Edwards is not traded I can see the Browns taking B.J. Raji or Orakpo in this situation.
6. Cincinnati Bengals - Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia6-5 | 310 lbs. | Senior
Plainfield, NJ
previous pick - Andre Smith - OT - Alabama
Others - Chris Wells - BJ Raji
The Bengals need help on their Offensive Line desperately. Eugene Monroe is the best pass blocking OT in the draft.
7. Oakland Raiders - Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri*6-1 | 200 lbs. | Sophomore (RS)
Kirkwood, MO
previous picks - Micheal Crabtree - WR - Texas Tech
Others - Jason Smith, Everette Brown
With new offensive coach Tom Cable, it was tempting to have the Raiders select an OT but we all know that Al Davis likes to throw the ball down the field. Although he has not drafted a Wide Receiver in the first round since 1988... Maclin's combination of size, speed, and the ability to return kicks puts him here at 7 to the Raiders.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars - B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College6-1 | 323 lbs. | Senior
Washington Twp., NJ
previous pick - Mark Sanchez - QB - USC
Others - Jason Smith, Micheal Oher
By signing Tra Thomas, the Jags filled their hole at tackle. Although, Thomas is not a long term solution... the Jags now have the choice of what position to take in the draft. They no longer have a glaring need at tackle. The Jaguars defense lacked its toughness last year after the departure of Marcus Stroud. To get that toughness back they select Raji here at 8 and pair him up with John Henderson.
9. Green Bay Packers - Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas6-4 | 260 lbs. | Senior
Houston, TX
previous pick - Everette Brown - DE/OLB - FSU
Others - Brian Orakpo
With the Packers moving to a 3-4 defense under new Defensive Coordinator Don Capers, they could us a edge pass rusher. Malcolm Jenkins could be an intriguing selection here but with Orakpo on the board the Packers have no choice but to select the product out of Texas
10. San Francisco 49ers - Andre Smith, OT, Alabama*6-4 | 341 lbs. | Junior
Birmingham, AL
previous picks - Andre Smith - OT - Alabama
Others - Jason Smith, Everette Brown, B.J. Raji
(update 4/23) - Andre Smith is on the Board. If Maclin or Crabtree are here... they will be the pick
Here at 10... with Andre Smith off the board the 49ers will not reach for Oher. Mark Sanchez will get a long look but ultimately the team will attempt to improve its pass rush by selecting Aaron Maybin who has the quickest first step in the draft. They may trade down here if the board looks like it does in this mock.
(previous update)Because Marvel Smith is not the long term solution, the 49ers will select Andre Smith here at 10. I don't believe they will select Oher here if Smith is gone because i believe Oher is a reach here. Because of the signing of Marvel the 49ers have flexibility at 10. They would probably go with Aaron Maybin had Andre been selected by the Bengals at 6 and may go with Mark Sanchez had he not been selected 8. The wild card here for the 49ers would be Chris Wells or Knowshon Moreno at 10 because they have said they will select a running back in the 2009 draft. Wells would be a better possibility because they want to add a bigger back.
(previous update) With the signing of Marvel Smith, I believe that the 49ers will select an edge rusher instead of a LT in the first round. Aaron Maybin or Orakpo would be ideal but Everette Brown must prove he can play OLB in a 3-4 prior to the 49ers pick to enable him to be in consideration here at 10.
update 2/17 - For more proof on why the 49ers will not select a Quarterback in the first round. Daniel Brown - Mercury News
It also sounded unlikely that the 49ers would take a highly rated college quarterback such as Georgia's Matthew Stafford or USC's Mark Sanchez if they slipped to the 10th spot.
"As far as the draft, it would mak
Picks 11-21

11. Buffalo Bills - Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee6-3 | 270 lbs. | Senior
Clio, SC
previous picks - Everette Brown - DE - Florida State
Others - Jeremy Maclin, Brandon Pettigrew, Brian Orakpo
With the recent signing of Terrel Owens, the Bills no longer need a wide receiver. TE is a possibility but not here in the first round. The Bills attempt to improve their front 7 with the selection of Robert Ayers
12. Denver Broncos - Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU6-5 | 290 lbs. | Senior
Edgard, LA
previous picks -Rey Maualuga - LB - USC
3-4 scheme, 3-4 end is essential
13. Washington Redskins - Michael Oher, OL, Ole Miss6-5 | 318 lbs. | Senior
Memphis, TN
previous pick - Micheal Oher - OT - Ole Miss
Others - Everette Brown
The Redskins could go with several different players here at 13 but with all three of the elite pass rushers off the board, they go safe here with an Offensive Tackle. Oher is the choice
14. New Orleans Saints - Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB, Ohio State*6-1 | 237 lbs. | Junior
Akron, OH
previous pick - Vontae Davis - CB - Illinois
Others - Brian Cushing
The Saints filled their corner need in free agency but they lost the Deuce. To replace him they select Beanie Wells out of Ohio State in a similar mold to Deuce.
15. Houston Texans - Brian Cushing, OLB, USC6-3 | 255 lbs. | Senior
Park Ridge, NJ
previous pick - Malcolm Jenkins - S/CB - Ohio State
Others - Vontae Davis
The Texans have a need at outside linebacker. Brian Cushing is the guy. If he did indeed fail a steroid test at the combine his stock may fall.
16. San Diego Chargers - Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC6-2 | 260lbs. | Senior
Eureka, CA
previous pick - Chris Wells - RB - Ohio State
Others - Rey Maualuga
If LT leaves, a running back could be a possibility. But Rey Maualuga fills a big void since the departure of Junior Seau, an impact linebacker. (Shawn Merriman was out last year.)
17. New York Jets - Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland*6-3 | 206 lbs. | Junior
Silver Spring, MD
previous picks - Mark Sanchez - QB - USC
Others - Percy Harvin, Jeremy Maclin
They need a deep threat and with the Bucs signing Leftwitch there is no urgency for them to get Josh Freeman.
18. Denver Broncos (f/CHI) - Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB, Penn State*6-4 | 236 lbs. | Junior
Ellicott City, MD
previous picks - Aaron Maybin - DE/OLB - Penn State
Others - Darrius Heyard-Bey, Tyson Jackson, Micheal Oher(Chi Picks)
OT is one of the largest needs for the Bears........ There has been a trade Now on the clock the Denver Broncos. With none of the top three Quarterbacks on the board here at 18 the Denver Broncos will attempt to solidify a 3-4 defense under Josh McDaniels and Mike Nolan. By selecting Aaron Maybin... they get themselves an outside linebacker with the ability to rush the passer.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Everette Brown, DE, Florida State*6-1 | 252 lbs. | Junior
Stantonsburg, NC
previous pick - Brian Cushing - OLB - USC
Others - Rey Maualuga
If they remain here at 19, they will attempt to solidify their defensive front seven.
20. Detroit Lions (f/DAL) - Eben Britton, OT, Arizona*6-6 | 310 lbs. | Junior
Burbank, CA
previous pick - Eben Britton - OT - Arizona
Others - Aaron Maybin
The Lions elected to go QB at pick #1, now they need someone to protect him. Eben Britton can do just that and he is the best tackle still on the board.
21. Philadelphia Eagles - Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia*5-11 | 207 lbs. | Sophomore (RS)
Belford, NJ
previous pick - Brandon Pettigrew - TE - Oklahoma State
Others - Micheal Oher
It is apparent the Eagles will add to their receiving core/Tight end to help Donovan McNabb. Whether they address the need by signing or trading for Tony Gonzalez, Anquan Boldin, or T.J. Houshmandzadeh or in the draft... the void will be filled. Although I think Brandon Pettigrew is an intriguing pick here.... I feel that the value of Knowshon Moreno is too much to pass up at 21.

Picks 22-32
22. Minnesota Vikings - Hakeem Nicks, WR, UNC*6-1 | 210 lbs. | Junior
Charlotte, NC
previous pick - Percy Harvin - WR - Florida
Others - Josh Freeman
The Vikings have one threat on Offense. All Day Adrian Peterson. By selecting Nicks at 22, they get themselves a polished receiver to stretch the field. Whether Tavaris Jackson will be able to hit him on a streak route is up to you
23. New England Patriots - Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois*6-0| 204 lbs. | Junior
Washington, DC
previous pick - Brian Cushing OLB - USC
The Patriots first selection of Jerod Mayo was a huge success. After a rookie of the year season the Pats look to further improve the defensive side of the ball by improving the talent of their depleted secondary. Vontae Slipping to 23 would be a gift.
24. Atlanta Falcons - Malcolm Jenkins, CB/S, Ohio State6-1 | 201 lbs. | Senior
Piscataway, NJ
previous pick - Peria Jerry - DT - Ole Miss
Others - Brian Cushing - Brandon Pettigrew
This pick is to help out their 3rd pick overall last year... Matt Ryan. This pick is also contingent on their efforts of getting Tony Gonzalez.............. They got Tony now the pick is Malcolm
25. Miami Dolphins - Clay Matthews, OLB, USC6-3 | 240 lbs. | Senior
Agoura Hills, CA
previous pick - James Laurinaitis - LB - Ohio State
Clay Matthews worked his way into the first round after his combine performance. He fits the Dolphins scheme perfectly. He is the pick at 25.
26. Baltimore Ravens - Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State6-6 | 260 lbs. | Senior
Tyler, TX
previous pick - D.J. Moore CB - Vanderbilt
Others - Malcolm Jenkins
I really have to Idea what the Ravens will do here at 26. They could go several different routes. But with Malcolm Jenkins still on the board they will take him in an instant regardless of what free agents they brought in to improve their secondary.
27. Indianapolis Colts - Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss6-2 | 290 lbs. | Senior
Batesville, MS
previous pick - Peria Jerry - DT - Ole Miss
The Colts could go Peria Jerry here or Kenny Britt. I elected to go with Jerry.
28. Buffalo Bills (f/PHI - f/CAR) - William Beatty, OT, UConn6-6 | 307 lbs. | Senior
York, PA
previous pick - Micheal Johnson DE - Georgia Tech
Others - Micheal Johnson
The Bills gave the Eagles their left tackle and now they get their replacement in William Betty
29. New York Giants - Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers*6-4 | 215 lbs. | Junior
Bayonne, NJ
previous pick - Brandon Pettigrew - TE - Oklahoma State
Others - Darrius Heyward-Bey
The Giants need to replace PLAX. They were a different team without him last year. Britt is of the same mold and may be able to replace Burress's production.
30. Tennessee Titans - Alex Mack, OC, Cal6-4 | 311 lbs. | Senior
Santa Barbara, CA
previous pick - Hakeem Nicks - WR - North Carolina
Others - Hakeem Nicks
The Titans could go many directions with this pick. Alex Mack can play guard until Kevin Mawae leaves.
31. Arizona Cardinals - Larry English, DE/OLB, Northern Illinois6-3 | 255 lbs. | Senior
Aurora, IL
previous pick - Clint Sintim - OLB - Virginia
Others - LeSean McCoy
With their franchise tagged player still not signed they add depth to Karlos Dansby's position by selecting Larry English
32. Pittsburgh Steelers - Darius Butler, CB, UConn5-11 | 183 lbs. | Senior
Tamarac, FL
With final selection of the first round..... The Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers select Corner Darius Butler out of Connecticut. Pittsburgh could use some secondary help. Butler is arguably the best cover corner in the draft.

- I think Oher gets the nod over Smith...Andre's the best run-blocking OT in the draft, but Oher's more accomplished in all phases of the position. Besides wanting a power running game, Singletary wants better pass protection for his QB and he'll provide both.

- Since I traded our 2nd rnd pick for our QB I cant wait til the 3rd rnd to find a really good OL. So as I have my pick of any one of the elite OL in this draft and given our more pressing need to put pressure on opposing QBs what do I do?...I got it! Trade Gonzalez for a #2 pick where I can get a good OG and take the no brainer...Curry

- everyone seems to think the rams will take a OT w the #2 pick, but i think a little differently. I think Spags goes D with the pick. LB Curry or they could shock you all and take...wait for it...Orakpo! they can can get a OT later in a deeper group than there is at DE. I know they have Long, but Spags knows the value of a deep Dline, look where he came from, NY and before that Philly.

- I don't think the Lions will go offense on the first three picks considering their defense gave up the 2nd most points in NFL history. I can see the first two picks but they will move Backus to guard if they select a tackle at 20. In this scenario the 33 pick would be Laurinaitis filling a big need considering they don't have a MLB on their roster.

- I'm surprised you have the Bears selecting a free safety and not a receiver. While its true that receivers are very iffy picks, I don't think their next strongest need is another safety. They need to start thinking of replacements for Kreutz and Urlacher. However I wouldn't be surprised to see Angelo waste a pick on a safety.

- I like both st and 2nd rd picks you have fot the Ravens. They take wr DHB for the 1st real deep threat since Michael Jackson, when they came to B-More from CLeveland. And then the o-line is addressed. They definaely need to protect the franchise QB. Nice picks.
