The Best Summer Movies of 2009

Don't you just love movie lists? Especially lists packed with great movies like the ones on this page, the best of the 2009 summer movies? I love movie lists, I use them as references for movies that please the masses. In my house, 'the masses' means my husband, two teenage boys, myself and frequent company as well as the movie lovers on my gift buying list.

Sound & Vision Magazine's August 2009 issue included this list of the top 15 summer blockbusters and it is a fantastic list. (As many of the movies on it are.) You will, I am sure, find something on this list for everyone in your household, even if you have children.

Many of the movies on this list are not available on DVD or blu-ray yet but they are available for pre-ordering and they will be out just in time for your Christmas shopping. Pre-order them now through Amazon and get your Christmas shopping done early! Plus, Amazon will protect you with their Price Protection Policy. That means that, if the price goes down between now and the time that the movie becomes available, they will honor the lowest price. Pick out a couple of these fantastic movies, add a wonderful popcorn gift basket like that shown right here or like the one at the bottom of the page, and you will have an amazing gift package for a movie lover on your Christmas shopping list.

WAIT...
Here's A Fun Challenge For You!

Take a pen and paper and jot down the names of FIVE (or more) movies that you think were the blockbusters of the summer of 2009. Then correct your answers as you read this page. I'll be waiting at the end of this page to hear how you did!

MOVIE NUMBER 1 ~~ X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Starring Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Kitsch and Danny Huston

Who doesn't love Hugh Jackson? Well, okay that's not a very fair way to talk about a movie but I do think he has done a simply fantastic job of portraying Wolverine, don't you? Anyway, I have seen this movie, the first on this list, and I saw it on a busy airplane. It was still riveting on the teeny tiny screen in the back of the seat in front of me so if you like action movies with a good story, I'd recommend it.

I did not follow the advance information or hype about this movie, I rarely do and so I missed hearing about 'the leak.' It turns out, though that the leak wasn't so bad after all. The director, Gavin Hood, said, "...it created a massive awareness of the film." Apprently, the leak only built anticipation for the movie in which the tale of how Hugh Jackman's Logan character became the man-beast that he is.

"Wolverine, fan favorite of the X-Men universe in both comic books and film, gets his own movie vehicle with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a tale that reaches way, way back into the hairy mutant's story. Somewhere in the wilds of northwest Canada in the early 1800s, two boys grow up amid violence: half-brothers with very special powers. Eventually they will become the near-indestructible warriors (and victims of a super-secret government program) known as Wolverine and Sabretooth, played respectively by Hugh Jackman (returning to his role) and Liev Schreiber (new to the scene). It helps enormously to have Schreiber, an actor of brawny skills, as the showiest villain; the guy can put genuine menace into a vocal inflection or a shift of the eyes. Danny Huston is the sinister government operative whose experiments keep pullin' Wolverine back in, Lynn Collins is the woman who shares a peaceful Canadian co-existence with our hero when he tries to drop out of the program, and Ryan Reynolds adds needed humor, at least for a while. The fast-paced early reels give an entertaining kick-off to the Wolverine saga, only to slow down when a proper plot must be put together--but isn't that perpetually the problem with origin stories? And despite a cool setting, the grand finale is a little hemmed in by certain plot essentials that must be in place for the sequels, which may be why characters do nonsensical things. So, this one is fun while it lasts, if you're not looking for a masterpiece, or an explanation for Wolverine's facial grooming." -- Robert Horton, Amazon

Here's another movie that I have seen and absolutely LOVED. When I left the theatre, I found myself thinking that it was the best movie that I have seen in a very, very long time. Why did I like it so much? I'm not sure ~~ it was definitely a very good story, well put together PLUS I understood many of the references to the original series. Additionally, there was a great deal of humour which was served up my style. I loved it and I laughed out loud!

This movie set out to satisfy fans and newcomers and I can certainly say that it more than satisfied both groups. My husband and I can remember watching the original series and my husband has probably seen all of the movies. My teenage boys have never seen any of the shows or movies from the Star Trek franchise and still loved this movie. My husband even chose to watch it for a second time in the middle of the Baltic Sea on our cruise this summer.

MOVIE NUMBER 3 ~~ Angels And Demons

Starring: Tom Hanks. Release date is unavailable right now but you can sign up with Amazon to be notified when it does become available for pre-order and/or purchase.

Amazingly, I have also seen Angels and Demons. I love Dan Brown's books and I have enjoyed the movies. In this book, Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) investigates the death of a famous physicist who was found dead with the symbol of a secret society (the Illuminati) on his chest. Of course, I preferred the book as books are almost always better, but this was an action packed movie that DaVinci Code/Dan Brown fans will enjoy. A great gift for my father will be a combination of the book and the movie!

This is what Amazon has to say about this movie:

"If the devil is in the details, there's a lot of wicked fun in Angels & Demons, the sequel (originally a prequel) to The Da Vinci Code. Director Ron Howard delivers edge-of-your-pew thrills all over the Vatican, the City of Rome, and the deepest, dankest catacombs. Tom Hanks is dependably watchable in his reprised role as Professor Robert Langdon, summoned urgently to Rome on a matter of utmost urgency--which happens to coincide with the death of the Pope, meaning the Vatican is teeming with cardinals and Rome is teeming with the faithful. A religious offshoot group, calling themselves the Illuminati, which protested the Catholic Church's prosecution of scientists 400 years ago, has resurfaced and is making extreme, and gruesome, terrorist demands. The film zooms around the city, as Langdon follows clues embedded in art, architecture, and the very bone structure of the Vatican. The cast is terrific, including Ewan McGregor, who is memorable as a young protégé of the late pontiff, and who seems to challenge the common wisdom of the Conclave just by being 40 years younger than his fellows when he lectures for church reform. Stellan Skarsgard is excellent as a gruff commander of the Swiss Guard, who may or may not have thrown in with the Illuminati. But the real star of the film is Rome, and its High Church gorgeousness, with lush cinematography by Salvatore Totino, who renders the real sky above the Vatican, in a cataclysmic event, with the detail and majesty of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel."

Originally, I was a big fan of the Terminator movies but I have not, for whatever reason, rushed out to see this particular movie. (I guess my tastes have changed somewhat.) Therefore, I thought this would be an interesting time to turn to The Movie Mom and see what she thought about it.

If you have read any of my other pages with family movies on them, you may know that I am a big fan of the Movie Mom and that I have used her reviews since my boys were born. (Or at least once they were old enough to watch movies.) As a matter of fact, I still turn to the Movie Mom to read how good (or bad) a movie is and what it contains that I might object to. She does, by the way, review all sorts of movies including ones that you would not take children to see, like this one, Terminator Salvation.

She said that Terminator Salvation has "enormously cool machines" and an "enormously magnetic performer" in the form of Australian actor Sam Worthington. She cautions that it is an intensely violent film with a near R rating but, overall she gives the movie a B. That sounds like this movie might be a great choice to watch at home, if you enjoy action-packed movies. She made me smile when she wondered aloud, "Who would win ~~ these guys or the Transformers?" You can read the Movie Mom's complete review by clicking right here.

MOVIE NUMBER 5 ~~ Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian

Starring Ben Stiller and Amy Adams. Release date December 1, 2009.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen Night at the Museum 2 yet but I am thrilled to be able to recommend you read the review that the Movie Mom, Nell Minnow has written. The Movie Mom's review of Night at the Museum 2 can be found by clicking right here. I am pleased to report that she gave the movie a B+, recommended it for fourth graders and up and said, "Everything is bigger, better, and especially funnier in this sequel to the surprise hit." Sounds good to me!

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW:

"Finally, a movie all ages can enjoy. And please take note, Hollywood -- yes, it can be done without swearing, sex or violence. Clever dialog, great acting and effects. We're all waiting for it to come out on video. We would even have taken the kids to see it again if the theater experience wasn't so expensive. One of the only criticisms is that we would have liked to have seen more of Robin Williams character. Rest assured, this is one movie that won't leave you jimmy-jacked!" ~~ Michele

MOVIE NUMBER 6 ~~ Up!

A Disney-Pixar Movie Features a grouchy old man (Ed Asner) and a persistant kid, Russell. Release date November 10, 2009.

Up features Carl Fredericksen (by Ed Asner) as an unlikely hero, a 78-year-old curmudgeon who had a modest life as a balloon seller. When he is sent to Shady Oaks Retirement Home, he puts thousands of helium balloons on his house and floats away to South America. The adventure is just starting when he finds a stowaway in the person of Russell (Jordan Nagai), a Wilderness Explorer Scout who is working on his Elderly Assistance Badge. Amazon says, "Up is an exceptional film that will appeal of audiences of all ages." Nell Minnow, The Movie Mom, recommends it for children of Kindergarten age and up. She cautions that most Pixar movies have been rated G but that this one has been rated PG. To read her complete review, click right here. Read More About This Summer's Pixar Movie, Up

The Movie Mom Discusses Movies With Pete Docter of 'Up'
The first thing I saw when I walked into the room was -- of course -- a bunch of beautiful helium balloons. And then I saw Pete Docter, the lanky and affable director of Pixar's new film, "Up," about an extraordinary journey to South America in a house lifted into the sky by an enormous bunch of balloons.
The Movie Mom Reviews Up
Pixar movies are beautiful to look at, but what takes your breath away is the story. They don't rely on fairy tales or best-selling books with pre-sold stories and characters we are already attached to. And, as if challenging themselves to make it even harder, they take on increasingly unlikely protagonists -- a gourmet rat, an almost-wordless robot, and now a cranky old man, and somehow they make us fall in love with them.

MOVIE NUMBER 7 ~~ Land of the Lost

Land of the Lost stars Will Ferrell, Anna Friel, Danny McBride, Jorma Taccone and Danny R. McBride. Release date October 13, 2009.

In Land of the Lost, a scientist gets more than he bargains for as his adventure takes a turn in the wrong direction. His team does not have any weapons, skills and only a few smarts when it comes to surviving in the dinosaur age all of which lead a merry adventure in this comedy movie.

This movie has an entertaining website at Land of the Lost where you can view the trailer, play a game or download some free ringtones.

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW

"...If you grew up with the show, you will recall that Marshall, Will, and Holly fall through a time warp into a land where dinosaurs roam and all kind of weird things grow. In this version, Ferrell plays a disgraced scientist, Anna Friel a brainy postgraduate, and Danny McBride (Pineapple Express) the sleazy owner of a desert tourist trap that happens to be home to the time portal. This begins to suggest how this movie wants to have it both ways: keep some of the original's kid appeal, but raunch it up just enough for fans of Judd Apatow's movies..."

MOVIE NUMBER 8 ~~ Public Enemies

Starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, Billy Crudup, Leelee Sobieski. Release date not yet available.

Take one actor who seeks out eccentric and larger-than-life roles and a director who likes doing movies with crime involved and you get Public Enemies. A biographic thriller telling the tale of a Depression-era bank robber named John Dillinger who was targeted by J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI. This movie is loud and has plenty of violence, after all Dillinger did rob more than twenty banks and kill several people as he went along. Because the depression was such a dark time, people actually liked Dillenger. "I'm not here for your money," he says to one bank customer who had the bad luck to be there during a robbery. "I'm here for the bank's money."

MOVIE NUMBER 9 ~~ Ice Age Dawn of The Dinosaurs

Release Date October 27, 2009

I haven't seen this movie yet. The Movie Mom says that it is gentler than the first two, less ambitious than the first and more engaging than the second. The 3D animation is beautiful and the story, engaging. She gave this movie a B+ and rated it for kindergarteners and up. You can read her full review at Ice Age Dawn of The Dinosaurs.

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW:

"I don't understand, why adults have so many complaints in their reviews of this movie. This movie is meant for children, so let them speak out! I have 8, 6 and 4 year old boys and they really truly loved this film. If an adult wanted to yawn during watching it, it was just his problem. Kids enjoyed it and that's all what matters, or not? Little boys love playing with the dinosaurs, they love to watch them in movies (from Land Before Times to Jurassic Park), so when this movie was supposed to come out during summer, we were among first its viewers. Oh, we laughed, it was amazing to see my kids enjoying movie so much. The whole story is cute and very original. Scrat again delivers and his "girlfriend" is remarkable! I can't wait for DVD to come out, so we can be again among its first buyers." ~~ Be-a-uty

MOVIE NUMBER 10 ~~ Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

More and more important things happened in this Harry Potter book which made it a tough movie to produce especially since we want no DEMAND the movies be like the books and share the magic of Harry Potter's world. Well, I (and many other poeple) think the producers managed to pull it off. I have read that people think this may be the best of all the movies. I agree. (My 15-year old son does not.)

In this movie, Harry has to stand and watch Ginny Weasley have a relationship. Hermione does the same with Ron. The frustrated adolescent romances make this movie one of "the funniest of the films. It has this warm and wonderful romantic element," said the producer, David Barron. Once again, I agree. (And my 15-year old son probably does not.)

I thoroughly enjoyed this Harry Potter movie because of the humour. This is one Harry Potter movie that I will watch again and maybe again. It actually made me want to go back and re-read the books. (My son does watch the Harry Potter movies again and again and I cannot tell you how many times he has read the books. For the release of this movie, he re-read the Harry Potter books backwards.)

More Interesting Reading About Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
...Harry Potter is becoming a man. He knows who he is and what he must do. He is angry and at times he is still impatient. He is developing confidence and judgment. But he is not yet ready to admit to himself, much less to Ron Weasley's sister Ginny (Bonnie Wright) that he likes her very much. Once again, author J.K. Rowling and screenwriter Steve Kloves expertly blend the most intimate and personal of teenage feelings with the grander concerns about the fate of the world.

Life Lessons From Harry Potter
Like most children's books, the series teaches lessons many religions would agree on: Don't kill, don't lie, and so on. But beyond that are more subtle life lessons that can help kids--and adults--navigate relationships, disappointments, and loss.

Harry Potter Quiz ~~ Which Character Are You?
om brainy bookworms to impetuous daredevils to quirky dreamers, the Harry Potter series is full of colorful characters. Which one are you most like? Take our quiz to find out.

Daniel Radcliffe Is Not A Good Actor
I loved the latest Harry Potter Movie (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince), but I thought Harry Potter wasn't played very well at all. I know the character is hard to play - all those layers and complexities, but the result just wasn't always convincing.

MOVIE NUMBER 11 ~~ Julie & Julia

Starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams

What do you get when you take a New York secretary who is bored with her life and television chef Julia Child? Why, this summer's movie Julie and Julia. Julie focuses on mastering every recipe in Julia Child's cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. She not only learns to cook but discovers that she has a passion for good food. I am in the middle of reading this book and it is funny. I can hardly wait to see the movie.

More Interesting Reading About Julie and Julia

Julie & Julia Review By Guardian.co.uk
There are few more civilised, civilising and generally delightful movies around at the moment than Nora Ephron's Julie & Julia, a film that treats two very American subjects the British cinema largely neglects or frowns upon: success, fame and the middle-class dedication to the achievement of excellence.

Meryl Streep's Got Legs the Los Angeles Times
After years of critical acclaim, she is finally winning wide popularity and box office gold, at the age of 60. Her last nine movies have taken in almost $1.2 billion worldwide.

Julie & Julia Reviewed By The Movie Mom
"Julie & Julia" is -- I can't help it -- a scrumptiously satisfying film about writer/director Nora Ephron's two favorite subjects: food and marriage. The Movie Mom gives this movie an A-.

Julie and Julia The Movie
Julie Powell started with a blog in 2002 called the Julie / Julia Project. She had an idea about 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking' by Julia Child. Julie blogged about her day-to-day trials and tribulations mastering the various French recipes. Soon her blog transformed into a book. Now the book is a movie entitled Julie and Julia.

Julie and Julia Soundtrack
21 songs fill the Julie and Julia Soundtrack with original music scored by award-winning composer Alexandre Desplat. Most memorable song on the Julie and Julia Soundtrack is Talking Heads "Psychokiller" ala "Lobster Killer" which perfectly accents the bon vivant crustacean killing scene.

MOVIE NUMBER 14 ~~ Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Release date October 20, 2009. Starring Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is nonstop action from the beginning until the very end. This movie was designed to entertain, forget the story line. Amazon says that this movie, "shaped up to be one of the worst reviewed and most successful movies of all time." Once again, a great choice for action movie fans. There is action and there is drama. Don't worry about the film being meaningful. It isn't. It is just plain fun.

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW:

"Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen is an excellent summer blockbuster and EXACTLY what you would expect from seeing it. Now, given, the first 10 minutes of the movie in my opinion were pointless, but you have to watch the entire movie. I was gripped from start to finish, and the excitement that this movie carries with it even before you get into the theater or watch it is remarkable. The movie gives you good vibes, and puts you in a fun and exciting world for the entire length. HIGHLY recommended." ~~ Mike (sumwhurr)

In Inglourious Basterds, movie director Quentin Tarantino unleashes torture and violence on the Nazi Party in revenge on the Third Reich. OMGosh, I just don't know where to start with this one. This movie has had so much attention and I have heard so many people talking about it but it is not a simple one to summarize on a page like this. I thought, I'd add a twist and leave it up to you. So here's your chance...convince someone else to buy this movie, or not.

If you HAVE seen Inglourious Basterds , what did you think of it?

they will know who we are."

Hi Brenda - just by looking at your list and realizing I have watched a few of these, I have to admit I am a movie nut. I sometimes wonder if I had a long marathonic session and again saw all the movies I have watched in my life, one after another - phew, it would take me months if not years.
8 out of the 15 is not bad.
By the way, thanks for visiting my Wolverine costume lens.

I've seen several of these - Star Trek, Public Enemies, Terminator Salvation, and UP! I loved UP! but I think Star Trek was my very favorite. I'm married to a HUGE Star Trek fan so I've seen all the originals, all the spin-off shows, and of course all the movies. I love how they managed to reopen the series to a completely new direction, one much edgier than the original series.

I am not a big movie goer but I did see Angels and Demons and Harry Potter. I like that you have given so much information about each movie that I can decide if I want to watch the DVD.

This looks great! I am not really a movie-watcher, so I could not participate in your challenge, but will be anxious to see what your other readers have to say!
