Red River Flood of 2009 - 2012 Pictures and Videos

Globe warming or just a mild winter in the Fargo, ND area. I hope it will continue and with plenty of rain in the spring, after any flooding along the Red River Valley.

The State of North Dakota is the richest state. Fargo made history in 2009 along with the neighboring cities and small communities in the region by fighting the Red River flood no one could win, but we did! Fargo is a business hub for hundreds of miles around where I-94 and I-29 cross roads. Sand-baggers began the fight on 2-14-2011 by starting to fill three million sand bags in preparation for the 2011 flood with a predicted crest of 39.5 feet.

The people of Fargo are tough and will fight for their hometown and for the region. We are honored to have Mayor Dennis Walaker as a leader. He rolls up his sleeves when the going gets tough and refuses to quit. 2010 in Fargo the second crest of the Red River was between April 16th and the 18th. It was expected to be higher than the first crest in March. The dikes were raised from 42 feet flood stage up to 44 feet flood level protection. Thankfully, the Red River only reached 41' and didn't wipe out the City of Fargo. I am impressed and inspired by the videos.

100 Year Floodplain

FEMA is revising the 100 year floodplain map for Fargo, North Dakota. The map will become effective some time in 2012. Because of revisions, many properties will be added to the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA), also known as the 100 year floodplain, high risk area, regulted floodplain or Zone A. Homeowners who are newly mapped into this zone and who have a federally backed mortgage will be required to purchase flood insurance.

Revised floodplain map - know your risk FEMA has sole authority to place or remove property from the SFHA. Congress requires FEMA to remap floodplains periodically to reflect popualtion growth. Fargo is scheduled for a map revision in 2011. Residents can view a preliminary version at www.fargofloodinsurance.com. Be sure to read the map legend carefully before studying the map.

How the map will effect you - In the revised map, a large portion of Fargo is included in the SFHA. Many properties will change categories from a low risk zone (500 year) into the high risk SFHA Zone A. Property owners newly mapped into the SFHA may be required to purchase flood insurance. If you have a federally backed (insured) mortgage your lender will require you to carry flood insurance.

Purchasing flood insurance - Your insurance agent is the best source of flood insurance information. You can learn more about this important topic at www.floodsmart.gov. Understand that homeowners' insurance does not cover flooding. Because of this, your lender is required to determine if you need to buy a separate flood policy. A mortgage lender has the authority to select flood insurance on behalf of the borrower and add the cost to their monthly payment. However, borrowers typically have the option to purchase flood insurance for their home.

Insurance agents agree that having a flood insurance in place before the map changes is better than not having one. Why? Once policyholders are insured with the National Flood Insurance Program they are considered "loyal customers" and can benefit from reduced paperwork and a better rate if they are newly mapped onto the Special Flood Hazard Area. For as little as $10.75 per month ($129 annually) you can own a flood insurance policy.

Major flood stage in Fargo is 30 feet. Fargo is the largest city in North Dakota and is the Gateway To The West. The intersections of Interstates I-29 going north and south, and I-94 going east and west are in Fargo. It is the major hub of the region for businesses, shopping and is an important place.

Fargo is in Cass County with its bordering city of Moorhead, Minnesota in Clay County right across the Red River to the east. People drive from 100s of miles to shop in Fargo and partake of the events within the city. It is an important stopping place for truck drivers and travelers. The crime rate is low in Fargo, it is the home of North Dakota State University, and neighbors the City of West Fargo to the west.

Fargo is a community that has learned to work together to win the battles that are brought on by natural disasters. The community has learned to reach out to neighboring communities that need help. Fargo City Officials are made up of people in the community that roll up their sleeves and work for the best of their hometown and surrounding areas. - We are a thriving community that needs to fight for what we have for the sake of a region, and we fight hard.

2009 Fargo Sandbag Crew Gets A Ride

On the way to place sadbags in place on the diking south of Fargo

The sandbag crews helped to build 48 miles of diking in the Fargo, ND and Moorhead, MN areas. They have helped to fortify and reinforce the dikes as the Red River flood levels have risen. They have worked hard when there were breaches in the diking to keep the dikes from breaking.

The people in the area community are hearty, hard working, and pull together in times of crises to keep their hometowns safe.

Many volunteers from all over the country have come to the aid of the 2009 flood fight. Our mayor of Fargo, Denny left his jacket in his truck one day in the freezing temperatures to pitch in at a site. He said that volunteers who were here from California could hardly believe he was going without a jacket.
