2010: Two Thousand Ten or Twenty Ten?

It's hard enough to remember the date when writing checks during the first few weeks of a new year. The recent transition to 2010 presents an additional challenge—what to call the year itself. Should we continue with the present pattern and call it "two thousand ten" or opt for the shorter, punchier "twenty ten" version? Advertisers have been tackling the issue for several months as they've rolled out their 2010 campaigns.

Anyone exposed to television or radio commercials knows there doesn't seem to be a concensus among them, though many of us have been conditioned by what we hear. Canadians and sports fans who are ramping up for the Winter Olympics have been hearing "twenty ten" for months now. I must be listening to a lot of car commercials lately, because "two thousand ten" sounds more familiar to me.

PRONOUNCING 2010

A Few Facts Courtesy of Wikipedia

Among experts and the general public, there is a debate as to how specific years of the 21st century should be pronounced in English. Although the majority of English-speakers say "two thousand X" for years of the current decade, in theory this could mean any year up to 2999.

One article suggests that since, for example, former years such as 1805 and 1905 were commonly pronounced as "eighteen oh-five" and "nineteen oh-five," the year 2005 should naturally be pronounced as "twenty oh-five," and that majority usage of "two thousand (and) X" is a result of influences from the Y2K hype, as well as the way "2001" was pronounced in the influential 1968 film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

According to a recent press release, David Crystal, author of the Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language, has predicted that the change of pronunciation to "twenty X" will occur in 2011, as "twenty eleven," explaining that the way people pronounce years depends on rhythm, rather than logic. Crystal claims that the rhythm or "flow" of "two thousand and ten," beats that of "twenty ten," but the flow of "twenty eleven" beats "two thousand and eleven."

dukethepcdr says:

Since the year is almost over, I'd say that I mostly heard it said two thousand ten. Hardly anyone said twenty ten. Now, the question is, will we say twenty eleven or two thousand eleven? My money is on twenty eleven since eleven has so many syllables in it, it would make two thousand eleven a tongue twister.

Jack2205 says:

Two thousand ten sounds better than twenty ten.

Henk says:

I say two thousand ten, both in Dutch (tweeduizendtien) and English.

I realize what becomes popular will dictate what I actually say, but right now I am opting for two thousand ten Twenty Ten sounds like a glasses prescription to me.

_Joan_ says:

2010 is the year for transitioning from "two thousand" to "twenty". When we're comparing this year to years from 2000 to 2009, we will probably say "two-thousand-ten" as in "Our sales were down in two-thousand-nine, but we are expecting increases starting in the first quarter of two-thousand-ten". But when we look toward the future we'll want to say "twenty" as in "If the Democrats hold their majorities in the twenty-ten congressional elections, these are the issues they will most likely address between now and the twenty-twelve presidential election."

But now is the time to lay the groundwork for the rest of the century. We don't want to be saying "two-thousand" for the next 90 years.

flowergardener says:

Hadn't really thought about it until now. I HAD been pronouncing the previous year as 'two thousand nine'; but I think I'll probably start 2010 by saying 'twenty ten'.

spirituality says:

Early 19th century they said 'the year 10', meaning 1810 :)

todtwentyten says:

My name says it all!

dgold says:

Twenty-Ten. I've been saying 'twenty' since 2001 (twenty-oh-one). Why? Because after 19 its 20, not 2,000.

scss says:

Definitely twenty ten as that just flows well and makes sense when you speak it

imaginarystory says:

twenty ten seems to just roll off the tongue
