2012 Coin Books are Available

The 2012 coin books are now available. Do you have yours?

The 2012 coin books should show everything through 2011. Most mints have released the majority, if not all, of their titles. Most coin designs are now known, and the publishers are free to disclose most of the 2011 issues.

Many coins have a projected mintage, but the 2010 coins now all have a final mintage. There may be a dash for mintage of the 2011 issues, but mintage figures should be available through 2010.

Why Own a Coin Book?

A serious coin collector must be able to valuate a collection. While any book has dated prices, the newer the book the better the prices in it. Hence, a serious collector should update with a new coin book annually.

Coin books offer information on what was issued. How can someone collect all of the Buffalo nickels if there are issues that one is unaware of? And which ones are rare? Mintage is a good starting place.

Another value one can extract from coin books is the specifications of coins. Counterfeit coins are becoming more prevalent. Knowing a coin's weight, and weighing a particular specimen, can often save a collector from owning counterfeit coins.

The Red Book

Collectors of United States coins generally consider the "Red Book" as a good authority. The book is clearly written, contains the important information, and included pictures of the coins. The prices for coins not made of precious metals have to be set once for an entire year, and the lag time between preparation of the book and its publication does allow for the prices to be a little old, but coin values for most issues change slowly enough to give one a good idea of a coin's value.

Precious metals are so volatile that a reference spot price for the metal is now a must. That gives the collector an idea of how much over the metal price the coin should command.

Also available in large print.

The Red Book is a good indication of the price a dealer would charge, not the price one could sell to a dealer at. And dealers use sheets that are updated regularly, so the Red Book is only an approximation.

Blue Book

The Blue Book

The Blue Book is like the Red Book, and contains much of the same information. However, it is usually smaller. The main difference is the prices quoted. Dealers must make a profit. No dealer can buy and sell coins for the same price. So, while the Red Book is what one can expect to pay, the Blue Book is what one can expect from a dealer.

Again, the material is always dated, and before selling a coin one should consult a reputable dealer. Never take a book as the authority in selling a coin.

World Coin Books

The Standard Catalog of World Coins is a number of different books. Some cover longer periods, some more countries. These books are excellent for sources of information, but the books are rather expensive if one gets a catalog of too many countries. So, select what matches your collecting interest.

The North America issue is not so expensive, and covers the United States, Canada, and Mexico. If you collect more than one of these country's coins, this one is highly recommended.

These can be found on DVD, but apparently the DVD is being issued after the print book, since none are appearing on Amazon.
