2012 Dragon Coins
In 2000, the Perth Mint produced an entry in its Lunar coin series for the silver dragon and a distinct coin for the gold dragon. The dragon became the coin to get for these series. Prices soared. While the lunar coins are technically bullion coins, they have gained numismatic value.
Now, the Perth Mint has released the 2012 series 2 Lunar Dragons! The silver coins are available in one-half, one, two five, and ten Troy ounce sizes as well as the one kilogram size. The gold coins are available in one-twentieth, one-tenth, one-fourth, one-half, one, and two Troy ounce sizes as well as the kilogram and ten kilogram sizes.
The gold and silver one Troy ounce and ten kilogram sizes are limited mintage coins, and the ten kilogram coin is mint to order.
The Perth Mint has the unusual custom, although well appreciated by the numismatic community, of using different designs on coins of different metals, so there are really two distinct series of current Lunar coins.
In the past, the Perth Mint has also issued special, limited edition, Lunar coins, including proof, colorized, and gilded coins, as well as large ten kilogram coins with gemstones embedded. If there is such a release of any such coins in the future for the dragon we will make you aware of it.
While the Perth Mint Lunars are best known, the Royal Canadian Mint has a beautiful numismatic dragon coin for 2012 already out.

The Royal Canadian Mint has released two distinct designs of its Lunar Dragon coins. The classic coin comes in gold (75% gold and 25% silver) and in fine silver. The lotus blossom design comes in fine silver.
These coins are all limited mintage.
The lotus blossom silver coin has a mass of 26,7 grams of 0.9999 fine silver, and is struck in proof.

The classic silver round design has a mass of 31.39 grams, and is also struck in proof.

The Perth Mint started its series one Lunar coins with gold coins, and two years later released the silver coins. In order to start series two simultaneously, three coins in the silver series, predated for three years of dates, was released at once, and the next two years saw series two coins also come out. Now, both series are matched, and in their fourth issue, following the tiger, the mouse, and the rabbit.
