Which 2012 End Of The World Prophecies Do The Scientists Believe?
Ranked #606 in Culture & Society, #14,458 overall
These 2012 end of the world prophecies have the experts concerned ...
Could the 2012 end of the world predictions/prophecies of a great Apocalypse be something that we should be alarmed about? Well, let's take a look at this. A lot of the world's scientists believe that there are definitely some events that could likely end with catastrophic results. However, even though they are all possible, certain events have a much larger probability of occurring than do other ones. These end of the world predictions for 2012 are primarily founded on the Mayan calendar, but are also occasionally related to other "conspiracies" or end time prophecies. But regardless, it has a lot of scientists worried.

Does The Mayan Calendar Predict A 2012 End Of The World Scenario?
Let's take a look at this Mayan calendar that everyone is talking about. The Mayans developed their "long calendar" which goes back to a point in time about 26,000 years ago. Their astronomers calculated that at this point in time (which they believed to be the creation) the sun, moon and the earth were in alignment with the center of the galaxy, which is where they believed the creation occurred. We now know that they weren't far off. The Milky Way (and most other galaxies) has a massive black hole at the center. Many astronomers now believe that these massive black holes are where galaxies are formed. Anyway, their calendar is divided into "great periods" which are 13 b'ak'tuns long or 5125 years. And this final "great period" is coming to an end on December 21, 2012 on the winter solstice and about 2 weeks short of perihelion day (the day when the earth is the closest to the sun). Could that close proximity to the sun make a difference? Hard to say. The closer proximity to the sun could (in theory) make us an easier target for solar bursts or flares.
Something to think about is if this "end time" that the Mayan calendar foretells is an apocalyptic event or if it is simply the start of a new age. If it is a catastrophic event, then I (as well as most other scientists) believe it will be a solar event such as a massive sustained flare and not a planet-X scenario. I'll explain why a little later on.
Also, it could very well be the start of the Great Tribulation of the Book of Revelation. The Mayans had many beliefs about the time of the end that very closely parallel the events in Revelation. Perhaps GOD talked to them? Current world events, especially in the Middle-East, certainly suggest that the Great Tribulation is getting closer. Keep an eye on world events involving Israel. My specific areas of expertise are in Bible Prophecies and the various Government Conspiracies. On topics like as "2012 End Of The World Prophecies" to really prepare yourself for this big event you need to check out the 2012 Official Countdown site for all of the latest news and updates. I've found it to be the most complete site on this subject. (Seriously, go check them out. It's pretty cool)

The 2012 End Of The World Scenarios That Are The Most Likely And The Least Likely To Occur.
MOST LIKELY - If the Mayans actually are in fact prophesying an apocalyptic end of the world event on December 21 of 2012, then what are the most likely scenarios? Most scientists, as well as myself, believe that the most likely "catastrophic type" event will be a massive solar burst or flare. These occur on average every 150 years (500 years for the Super massive ones). The last time we experienced one of these massive flares was in 1859. Since we didn't rely on electronics or a power grid back then it didn't cause much damage (except to some local telegraph lines). However if one were to strike the earth now it would destroy our electronics and power grids, because of a lack of proper shielding. This is why we are also an easy mark for the E-M blast of a nuclear device. What we really need to do is to start shielding the grid, in particular the transformers. A blast or flare of the magnitude of the 1859 occurrence would put us back to the stone age. What makes this even more problematic is that the earths magnetic field (which normally protects us) now apparently has a hole in it!
Another likely problem could be crust shifting. If some force were to cause this on a large scale the damage would be immense. Just look at the carnage of some of the recent earthquakes such as in Japan (one of the largest quakes in history). Could this be the beginning of global crust shifting?
LEAST LIKELY - The event that I believe has the least likely chance of happening is the return of Planet X. The whole concept of the existence of a Planet X has caught the interest of a lot of people, especially on the internet. The most common Planet X theory is that every 10,000 years, or so, a planet (of approximately the size of the earth) comes through our solar system. The problem with this theory is that to pass through every 10,000 years it would have to have an orbit like a comet, except that the elliptical orbit would have to be even more extreme (larger). And since the standard laws of planetary motion (Kepler's laws) must apply, the sun would be at a focal point of the ellipse. With an ellipse this extreme the orbit would take the "Planet x" the sun's corona. And if it's been doing this every 10,000 years it would surely be destroyed by now. That is why I am not to concerned about this happening.
But there are certainly a lot of other things that could be coming our way in 2012. Again, I would check out the 2012 Official Countdown site to make sure that you'll be prepared. They go into all of the theories and prophecies in a lot more depth and detail.

- Recently the government performed a test of the national (Emergency Alert System) EAS. (Of course, it failed.) It makes you wonder if they did this test in anticipation of something big happening in the future (2012?).

- Every major religion around the Earth, including lesser religions that you've most likely never even heard of, spiritualists (non-religious), and even the majority of agnostics and athiests tend to believe that in December 2012, something big is going to occur. ( 2012 end of the world ?)

- "Betelgeuse" the star has been losing its mass, and should likely turn into a supernova soon. But it's important that 'soon', however, can mean in astronomical time: It's as likely to happen in a million years as it would tomorrow.

- Well now, apparently the May 21, 2011 Rapture was nothing but a big dissapointment. (which shouldn't come as a surprise, seeing it was based on doctrine that was non-biblical) Now let's get back to work on this whole 2012 thing.

- Is the 2012-2013 Solar Max (24) going to only be half the size of Solar Cycle 23? NASA seems to think so, and that should be good news.
