What Do The Experts Think About 2012 Prophecies : What Has Them Afraid?

So, let's examine this Mayan Calendar. The Mayans developed a calendar that goes back approximately 26,000 years to what they considered to be the beginning (or the creation). According to their ancient astronomers this point of creation occurred when the sun, the moon and the earth were in a line pointing to center of the Milky Way. They believed that this place was the center of creation. What's interesting about this is we now know that the center of the Milky Way contains a massive black hole (as do almost all galaxies) where many astronomers believe that our galaxy evolved (was created). Fast forward to the present and you have a "great period" consisting of 13 b'ak'tuns, being 5125 years, that comes to an end on December 21, 2012 on the winter solstice. This is only a couple of weeks short of the Earth's point of perihelion, where the Earth's elliptical orbit is the nearest to the sun. Does this distance really matter? Well, in the event of a solar burst or a flare it might. This scenario is the most likely and I' ll mention more about it a little later.

Another thing to consider is that this "end" that is coming is just the start of a new age. An example of this is when the Bible refers to the end of the world, it is actually talking about the end of the current age and the start of the next (and you should be looking forward to the next one, it's going to be awesome). If the Mayan calendar actually is prophesying an apocalyptic happening on December 21, 2012, then what might they be talking about? This is what the experts think:

SOLAR PHENOMENA - This is the event that is the most likely, and the one that has the scientists the most concerned. Large scale Solar Flares occur about every 150 years or so, and the massive ones about every 500 years. Astronomers believe that we are long overdue for this type of event, and recent solar activity over the last decade suggests that it could be one of the massive ones. The last event of this type occurred in 1859. Luckily they didn't have the electronics and power grids that we have now, or they would have been in real trouble. As it was, it almost ruined their early telegraph system. If one were to strike today it would have the equivalent electromagnetic effect of a hydrogen bomb exploded in the atmosphere, except instead of being localized it would cover the whole planet. Our power grids and electronics would be destroyed. This could be avoided by insulating the grid (the government has been talking about doing this, I just hope they hurry the hell up)

THE TRIBULATION - I'm talking about the Book Of Revelation folks. This one also has a strong possibility of happening in 2012. We might not know the day or the hour, but world events point to the second coming. Just remember that the catastrophic event in this case is the "anti-Christ" (the devil pretending to be Jesus) deceiving the world. I don't mean to scare anybody but you need to know your scripture NOW. This is one homework assignment that really shouldn't be put off until the last minute.

PLANET - X - A lot of people have been talking about this one on the internet. It is an interesting thought although it is just not very likely. "WORLDS COLLIDE" might sound scary but the odds are astronomical against it happening.

CRUST SHIFTING - This is could be much more destructive than pole shifting. When some force causes the Earth's crust to shift, the result is many large earthquakes scattered around the globe. The massive quake in Japan has to make you wonder if this has already started.

There are also a bunch of other possibilities such as pole shifting, mass extinction, famine, and many other less likely scenarios. Again, I would check out the 2012 Official Countdown site to make sure that you'll be prepared. They investigate these 2012 prophecies in much more depth.
