The Story

The Southeastern Conference also known as the SEC is a college basketball and football conference which has its headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama and it is a part of the southeastern part of the US. The SEC is part of the NCAA's Division I for football and the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) which was previously known as Division I-A.

From a financial standpoint the SEC is one of the most successful, year after year it bring in more revenue than any other conference. During the 2010-2011 year the SEC established its own record of $220.0 million.

Another thing about the SEC that is revolutionary was that it was the first NCAA Division I conference to have a championship game when it comes to college football and was also a founding member of the BCS.

The SEC was established in 1932 because the members of the Southern Conference wished to have their own conference. After they left the Southern Conference thirteen teams went on to form their own conference and ten have remained a part of it to this day.

Three of the founding members left the new conference:
The University of the South - in 1940
Georgia Tech - in 1964
Tulane University - in 1966

Only in 1991 did the SEC expand from ten to twelve members, the new members were: University of Arkansas and University of South Carolina. When the new teams joined the SEC also split itself up into two divisions a Western and an Eastern. The members in the western division were in the Central Time Zone and the members in the Eastern division were in the Eastern Time Zone.

The SEC will have another expansion in 2012, it was announced that the Texas A&M University will join the SEC in 2012 and it was also announced that no other school will join the league for the time being.
