Those banding together do not believe that December 2012 will see the complete annihilation of this earth. Rather, as a rule they believe that there will be pockets of humanity that will survive, and they are setting about to better their chance of being a part of that number.

This has happened before. There is evidence that there have been other periods in the history of the earth when the world was heavily populated (think Atlantis and other ancient civilizations), and as a result of tumultuous natural events, that population was abruptly culled while at the same time, somewhere in the world, some humans survived. These people ultimately rebuilt earth.

Taking a page from history, 2012 survival groups are setting out to do the same.

Perhaps the most important function a survival group assigns itself is that of repopulating the earth. In order to survive the initial world trauma so that this can happen, the groups are carefully studying all of the research available to choose the most likely location for survival and the type of dwelling needed to ride out the storm. Basic supplies for starting over are being collected - everything from seeds to soap to basic medical equipment. Many groups have a well thought out list of what skills will be needed to make it through each day while slowly rebuilding our civilization, and they are inviting those with the needed skills to join the group.
