2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games

Ranked #34,735 in Sports & Recreation, #787,514 overall

In 2014, the Olympics will be coming to Sochi, Russia. Perhaps you were like me and are asking yourself "Sochi huh?" Nevertheless, we're sure to hear a lot more about Sochi during the 2010 Vancouver Games. At the end of the Vancouver Games, the torch will be passed to this town in Russia.

Sochi is a resort city in Southwestern Russia. It will be quite accessible to Europeans. Sochi has an average temperature of 80 and 81 degrees during July and August, and rarely goes below freezing in the winter. You can see palm trees in the city, which is odd for a town hosting the winter Olympics. Most assuredly, we will be learning a lot more about this city over the next five years.

Will Women's Ski Jumping be Part of Sochi?

Currently, ski jumping (as well as Nordic Combined) is a sport that is only open to men. Women are tried to sue for its inclusion in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, but the IOC did not think that it is developed enough to be included in the Olympic program. It will, however, be a part of the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics. IOC President Jacques Rogge says that women's ski jumping has a "very strong case" to make it into future Olympics. But does that mean Sochi?
