How to fit 20's on your Malibu

This is a tutorial to help you learn and give you instructions on how to fit 20's on your Malibu. This is for 97-04 Malibu's and not the new body styles. Hopefully this will answer all your questions and if doesnt ask away and I will add the to the guide.

Things You Will Need

Things you need:

[ ] 20" Wheel w/ 115x5 Lug Pattern or adapters are required
[ ] Tires mounted on wheels*
[ ] 3lb Hammer (or comparable)

*Pictures shown are using a 245/35/20, Details on what size tire are below

What You Need To Do

First take off the tire.
Then locate your stock spring baseplate (In picture below)

This will show you what to look for.

Now beat this plate
-Now while I was beating the plate I would test fit my wheels and continued beating the plate until the tire would freely turn. Also note that where you beat it and the tire space will not change when you set the car down so do not worry about that

Once you beat the plate and bolt the tire up you are done and should like sort of like this.

My tires are not slick even though they seem to in this picture and if you have any questions or want more pictures just let me know in the question box located at the bottom of the page.

What Size Of Tires To Use

The recommended tire size for this application varies
(Wheel Size x Width of Wheel)

20x8.5
245/35/20

20x7.5
225/35/20

Other tire sizes will work but will require spacers to allow the wheels not to scrub against the spring bases.

The offset of the wheel you buy is also a key factor. The suggested offset for a 20x8.5 wheel is a +38 offset. The higher the offset number the more you are going to have your wheels stick out from the car.

I have a 1999 cutlass on the same body style as the malibu. I have 245/3020 for the back do I beat the back spring plate too. The plate is stopping it from going all the way on. I have 225/30/20 in the front and they go on with no problem. Will it be better to use a spacer for the back?

20 inch tires will hit on all sides you car was not made to fit the wheel. for the rear of the car when rubber get shave off the tire cause hits fender lip take an air saw and trim about 1/4 or 1/2 no more off the fender well lip then roll the lip back under so no sharp edges .
call or search eastwood tools they sell a tool that will allow you to flare out the flare out and roll your fenders for 20's for your car
