Portable Modern Technology Saves Lives

Olivia Trimble

In the first decade of this century, it is estimated that there have been 7,850,000 heart attacks. The price of this extreme number of cardiac issues is staggering. "In 2010, heart disease will cost the United States $316.4 billion. This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity," according to a statement from the Centers for Disease Control. As 21st century technology becomes more and more personalized, it is allowing easier treatment for on site medical emergencies.

The automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable take on an old hospital stand by. We're all familiar with scenes from television and movies, where a patient has 'crashed' and the heroic doctor shouts "CLEAR" and shocks the patient back to life. Currently, a person doesn't need a prescription or a doctor's order to purchase an AED. The portable defibrillator not only offers audio prompts for the person operating the equipment, but it uses sensors to detect whether the patient is in need of a defibrillator at all. This is allowing AEDs to make their ways into personal homes, and according to an article by the Mayo Clinic staff, "...AEDs are now commonly available in many public places, including malls, office buildings, sports arenas, golf courses, cruise ships, schools, casinos, airports and airplanes." The value and superiority of an AED over the traditional CPR is clear, according to the Mayo Clinic staff. "Although cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a vital step in the lifesaving process and can keep some blood flowing to your heart and brain for a short time, often only defibrillation can restore the heart's normal rhythm and ultimately save your life".

While the reader may not be directly affected by his or her workplace keeping an AED on hand, it's almost certain that the reader knows someone who may one day need the convenient life saving device. According to the CDC, every 34 seconds a person in America suffers a heart attack. With numbers like these, the need for high tech, portable medical equipment will continue to increase unless serious measures are taken to combat the health issues plaguing modern Americans.

If you would like to learn how to operate an AED, or learn CPR , The American Heart Association offers CPR and AED training through its network of Training Centers. To locate a Training Center near you, call 1-877-AHA-4CPR.

Communication skills for the 21st century

Coy Homles, Brooke Monhollen, and Sarah Bean

Communication is the process of transferring information from one source to another. This process is used by people every day. People have been communicating long before the invention of paper or computers. People who needed to communicate over distances traveled by foot, animail, train, telegraph and by inventing the telephone. We have revolutionized the way of communication. Communication continues to make advances in the world today. The internet, cell phones, and mail have been the biggest way to communicate.

Effective communication in today's world requires more than the ability to read, type, and text. People communicate with one another in a variety of ways.

-Computer skills
Worldwide Web
Learning how to use various web applications such as e-mail for information is a vital way of communication that everyone can use. You need to have the skills to use assorted programs if you want to communicate well. You can send a person an email with a press of a button. It is one of the faster ways to communicate.

-Facebook/Myspace
Communication on Myspace and Facebook is very simple. One needs to have the skill to make a Myspace/Facebook profile including having the knowledge of putting pictures onto your profile, as well as quotes and other information. Both are tools that one can use to stay in touch with people around the world. You can even keep track with your friends!

-Telephone
The invention of the telephone gave people the opportunity to communicate with almost any other user. It allowed people talk to another without actually being present. The telephone over the years has changed from rotary to voice command signal, now touch screen.. Telephones have also improved in size over the years. They have came a long ways from being a huge hassle to carry around to fitting in the palm of your hand.

Good communication skills are an absolute must in our Information Age. Technology is undergoing rapid change and new and improved technological advances seem to appear daily. It seems as if every year technology is coming out with something newer and better. Only time can tell what our communication skills and practices will become: just expect the unexpected.

Cross-Cultural Communication

Felipe

Cross-cultural communication or intercultural communication is people from different cultural backgrounds attempting to communicate.

In today's global business, the demand for understanding individuals from different origins is increasing. It is not easy to learn well about other cultures. However, there are several skills and principles that would certainly help a business man to communicate and create business relations with individuals from a different culture.

Currently there are many jobs which are related to international relations such as business executive, journalism, university/college professor, personnel manager, and international business. It is very important to have this skill set in the 21st century, such as to know a second language which would help a person to understand and communicate with people from other cultures. It is also very important to know how to deal with this cultures in order to prevent misunderstandings in a business aspect.

In order to communicate with people from other regions, people should have the skill of understanding the cultural differences. In the communications styles for instance, some cultures it is impolite to speak loudly, and while in others it is quite common to speak loudly in order to demonstrate excitement. In some cultures when people raise their voices in a conversation they could be demonstrating that they are angry or quite unhappy with something, and while in other cultures it could be a sign of happiness. Attitudes in conflict can be quite different in different cultures, for example, in some cultures it is best to avoid conflict while in other cultures it can be a positive thing.

In order to have a more profound understanding of other cultures direct experience would be the best way to understand better people from other origins, for instance, moving or traveling to a country where it is possible to learn more about it. However, sometimes it is not so easy to move or travel to another country. Thus, a good beginning is to listen to foreign music, try to meet people from other cultures, information about their costumes, and anything that would make you closely related to that culture.

Being able to speak a second language and being able to communicate will became a very important skill of the 21st century, for business or even just for traveling, these are quite good skills to acquire.

Importance of being Bilingual or Multilingual in the 21st Century

Lucas Ivanovic

Being multilingual in the 21st Century is becoming everytime more important for everyone. There is no way one could learn every lenguage needed in their a lifetime, but knowing more than one language gives you big advanteges.. It is still a great skill to know more languages than one.

Advantages include:

  • A better undesrtanding for other subjects in school. Mathematics is considered another leanguage itself, so knowing more than one language can provide you with the more tools to learn this better.

  • Getting a job is gettin everytime harder. Knowing more than one laguange, makes you better than a monolanguage person/

  • The Unites States is a country with a large diverse population. One example of a minority in the United States is that approximately 138 million Hispanics live in the United States and 45 million of those Hispanics speak Spanish. For those who only speak spanish it is harder to them to live in this country.

  • Bilingual or multilingual people gain more money due to the ability to communicate with more people.

  • An estimated 25 million Americans travel overseas every summer. When you speak the another language, it makes your travel so much easier.

  • It is a very important skill of the 21st Century for health care professionals to be able to speak another language, because not every pacient their going to treat speaks their language..

    Social Networking Skills

    JoAnn Day and Mariel Hughes

Imagine yourself visiting with an old classmate in a rural community, chatting with a relative who's stationed in London and researching the latest techniques in your personal trade-all at the same time.
"Social networks and blogs now are the 4th most popular online activity, ahead of personal email, Nielsen reports" is the headline of a news release from Nielsen Online.

Social networking is not a new task but we now have a new set of tools to apply to this task. The office water cooler has now become the company blog site for colleagues to share their experience and technical advice. The break room chatter has been somewhat quieted by Facebook, an online community of internet users, a social site used by many.

According to this website Social Networking Literacy Skillsthese are the top five percentage of online tweens and teens who say they do these activities at least weekly:

      41% posting messages
      32% downloading music
      30% downloading videos
      29% uploading music
25% updating personal Web sites or online profiles

Social networking is still developing in both its audience and its uses. The business community has only just begun to use this tool as a means for sales and marketing. The internet is fast becoming the strongest form of communication. Like the introduction of the cell phone not that long ago, this form of communication will fast become an asset in our lives and offer many opportunities as it evolves.

    Writing in the 21st Century

    BY: Tameca Simpson

In the 21st century, we work, talk, and play with people who are far from us. We have friends and coworkers all over the world. We stay connected with each other through the written word.

The means of sharing a story are changing so fast that 21st century writing is physically different from writing before. Back in the day when someone thought of writing, usually it just required a pen and a piece of paper. Nowadays, there are webpages, texting, IM,and computergame chat. Even though the means of telling a story has changed, the one main purpose in writing is still the same: to tell our story as clearly as possible.

A few examples of why writing is so important:

    • Writing lets us use the new media technology develops.

    • Writing allows us to communicate with people from other countries, and helps us develop greater understanding of different people.
    • .
    • Written language is a necessity for work and school.

    • With texting, a lot of our social lives are written, too.

    • Writing is a way of learning.

As with most things in life, there are proper skills that are required. Writing is one of them.

A few skills to maintain writing include

    • Getting started, having an idea of what to write

    • Organizing your writing .

    • Knowing the specific subject to write about, and not drifting off to another off the topic subject.

    • Thinking about your audience and keeping them interested.

    Cell Phone Literacy

    Kimberly Flores

It was in 1983 when the first portable cell phone was commercialized by Motorola with the Motorola Dyna TAC 1800x. It was a 13 inch long device, weighed 28 ounces and was primarily used in cars. The cell phones we use today have come along way from making a simple phone call in your car. The technology of cell phones over the past few years have greatly improved since the Dyna TAC and has dramaticly changed the way people rely on the mobile phone. The usage of cell phone is definitely a 21st century skill that most people need to know.

Most people today use cell phones for the simple task of communication from texting to email. As of 2007 there were 250,000,000 cell phone users in the United States and is still growing rapidly. The usage of mobile devices is becoming more and more demanding and therefore It is very important to learn the skills it takes to use a cell phone.
Basic applications of cell phones include:

    • Phone calls
    • SMS Text messaging
    • Phone Book
    • Alarm Clock
    • E-Mail
    • Digital Camera
    • Video Recorder
    • Music Player
    • Gaming platform
    • Internet Browsing

Future Application to develop in the next few years will include:
    • Video Chatting
    • Motion Sensing Control
    • Remote Control
    • Mobile Wallet
    • Video Projection
    • Wireless Charging

Future applications may eliminate the usage of other daily object we use today. The video chatting application can elimate normal vocal phone calls to advance phone call where you can see who your talking to. The mobile wallet can eliminate the usage of credit cards and may also decrease the number of card theft. Cell phone are on there way to become the device we live by and the device that controls everything in our daily lives. Motion sensing control, also known as "the magic wand", eliminates touching your phone for certain commands. A remote control demand will be able to allow your phone to control other electronics such as your tv or sterio.

Eventually we will all need to develop the skills it takes to work a cell phone from basic applications to more advance ones, depending if it is for personal use or business use. As the mobile phone is becoming the device of the 21st century the skills needed to obtain to use one can keep people with the times. Sometimes just sitting down and experimenting with your phone can help you learn more about how to use the applications. For those who are technology illiterate there are book that have guides to how to work all kinds of phones. To learn more about your personal phone device you may also go to your mobile provider's website and there you can look a specific device to learn more about it under suppot links. To gain the skills you need to use your cell phone can be easily done by anyone of all ages.

    Computer Skills

    Kelly Spencer

computer literacy To communicate in today's society and work force, knowing how to operate and navigate a computer is essential. Virtually everything we do revolves around computers, whether for work, school, or pleasure. From very young children to our older population, knowledge of good computer skills is a basic necessity.

The basic skills needed to function on a computer are:

    • Setting up the computer. We all need to be able to plug in a computer and turn it on.>
    • Using the keyboard and mouse and be able to navigate the function keys.

    • Internet browsing and website navigation.

    • Use of basic software, such as word processing programs.

It has become increasingly essential to have basic computer skills in the 1st Century. Many people have personal computers in their homes as they have become a necessity. All public school systems have computers for teaching essential computer skills to students before they graduate. Most libraries offer public access to their on-site computers as well.

    Robotics

    Josh Wheeler

Robotics are becoming a greater part of our lives. We are becoming more dependant on robotics in the military and police forces. Robots are starting to help surgeons save lives and have also come into our homes to help us with daily household chores. Many companies and organizations are investing in robotic technology currently sponsoring 121 robotics competitions this year. These competitions are designed to enhance the current technology devoted to robots. It has been stated that at the rate of current technological advancement a computers capabilities double every two years. This fast moving pace necessitates an ability to change and interface with these ever advancing machines.
    Robotics Competitions

In 2001 Congress mandated that one third of military ground vehicles must be unmanned by 2015. According to the Department of Defense report, "Unmanned Systems Roadmap 2007-2032," the Pentagon plans to spend $4 billion by 2010 on unmanned systems technology, with an eye toward increasing autonomy to free up troops that would otherwise have to monitor the robots closely.
    Military robotics link 1

Companies such as Boeing continue to innovate autonomous robots at their own expense, knowing the cababilities that can come from these machines. The Phantom Ray a fully autonomous UAV, or unmanned flying vehicle, can stay aloft for 30 hours allowing better defense of our country. ''Should the military want to buy combat UAV's like the Phantom Ray from Boeing the price tag would be about $60 million to $70 million a piece in current dollars," says Davis, current Boeing CEO, adding that this figure would become "dramatically less expensive" as production expands. Sound pricey? Consider that an F-22 strike fighter costs about $143 million apiece.
    Military robotics link 2

Today's surgeons are required to perform many difficult procedures. Using new robot technology allows these professionals to help us in ways that would not have been attempted in the past. Unfortunately many surgeons face obstacles like obstructed access and a lack of depth perception when it comes to performing intricate operations. UAMS offers patients an alternative to conventional open surgical procedures with the da Vinci U2122 Robotic Surgery System. Our caring and compassionate doctors are now using the da Vinci Surgical System for a growing number of procedures and treatment areas. These machines allow smaller incisions in the body which reduces surgical time, risk of infection, and faster recovery.
    Medical robotics

Robots are even coming into our homes to help our with chores. The Roomba is an autonomous robot that can vacuum and mop floors. The owner of iRobot, maker of the roomba, envisions a future of many robots completing daily household tasks allowing more of our burdened schedules to be devoted to other priorities. Robotic technology has quickly advanced past the point of no return. Robots are here to stay and our ability to interact with these machines must advance with their technology.

    Horticulture

    Chris Senteney + Steven Hayes

Horticulture is an essential aspect of the twenty-first century because all life depends on plants, either directly or indirectly.

The word "horticulture" is derived from Latin. It comes from the words "hortus" which means garden and "culturea" meaning cultivation. Humans depend on plants for oxygen, food, textiles, and medicines.

The basic ingrediant needed for life is oxygen, which is produced in a process that only takes place in plants, known as photosynthesis. Food is also a crucial factor in sustaining life. That area of horticulture is known as agriculture. Agriculturalists specialize in the growing of fruits and vegetables, which we eat everyday. Agronomy is a term that is used to describe the area of grains, which are also used in making food, and fiber crops used to make textiles. Forestry is the science of growing trees, a necessary division because it gives us the timber that we use for buildings, paper, and also materials used for textiles.

Ethnobotany is the study of using plants in medicine. For instance the cancer drug Taxol, which is used when people are going through chemotherapy, is derived from a chemical that is only produced in the Pacific Yew Tree. Whereas Floriculture is not crucial to life, it does make it more enjoyable. Floriculturalists are the people that focus on ornamental plants and flowers that we use to beatify landscapes.

Whereas horticulture mainly deals with the study of plants, it also affects the economy. Many countries rely on the exports that we produce from plant material. Spain is the leading producer of fruits and vegetables which bring in over 107 million dollars annually. China's textile industry brings in 63.5 billion dollars in and is responsible for 18% of the worlds' textile industry. The leading flower exporter is Columbia and it brings in over 568 million dollars into their economy.

So as you can see, horticulture is not only vital to our health and well-being, it is essential to the economies of the world.

    Alternative Energy

    Michelle Dorado

In this day and age we can't rely on the fossil fuels to supply our nation's energy much longer. In the 21st Century there will be a need for people who are educated in alternative energy, and in how to help everyday people change their homes over to "Green" methods. Hopefully alternative energy educated people can help reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

    Types of Alternative Energy

Wind Energy harnesses the power of the wind to propel the blades which is then turned into electricity for human consumption.
    Pros

    • Obtaining the wind energy produces no pollution

    • Wind energy is also renewable

    • Farming and grazing can still take place around the bottom of the wind turbines

    • Wind farms can be built off-shore

    Cons

    • Constant wind is needed for continuous power generation

    • Large wind farms has a negative effect on the scenery

Solar Energy is the sun's ray (solar radiation) that reaches the earth. It can be collected by solar panels and converted into energy.
    Pros

    • Renewable energy source

    • Solar power generation produces no air or water pollution

    • Solar energy can be used for practical uses such as heating and lighting

    Cons

    • Does not produce as much energy on cloudy days

    • Solar Energy stations can be very expensive to build

Geothermal Energy harnesses the heat energy present underneath the Earth.
    Pros

    • Does not produce any negative by-products

    • Once a geothermal plant is built it is quickly self-sufficient energy wise

    • They are small and normally have no negative effect on the landscape

    Cons

    • If installed incorrectly, these plants can produce harmful pollutants

    • Geothermal sites are prone to running out of steam.

    Hydroelectric Energy
    Pros

    • Sustainable

    • Non-polluting

    • Low energy cost after initial set up

    Cons

    • Change to natural water-flow

    • Degrades water quality

    • Blocks seasonal fish migration

    • Disrupts the ecosystem

Skills Needed to Use these possible energy sources

    • Education

    • The UK states that it will need people who have a degree of higher education in engineers and scientist who can help reduce the company's dependency on fossil fuels. So with this is mind it is easy to see that we will need people that are educated in this demanding field to teach and lead the way to dependence

    • There will be a demand for people who know how to properly install these machines that collect the energy.

    • We will also have a demand in jobs to maintain these machines

    • We will need people who are educated in energy, or even electricity, so that we will not make mistakes in obtaining or transporting the energy

    • In order to work in this field you should be flexible because your knowledge might be needed anywhere.

    • There will also be a need for people to educate the public on how to use this energy

    • Currently there is a high demand for people to build upon their current education level to meet the green needs

    Cool Facts including Alternative Energy
    Information On Alternative Energy

    Living Green

    Rachel Matlock

type=textHave you ever thought about how living green could affect our health and the environment? Global warming affects everyone. People who count on livestock and farming for their livelihood would be affected when the increase in heat diminished the water supply. Those who enjoy hunting, fishing, boating, and skiing would also be affected by decreased water supply. Heat waves could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat rash, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. These are just a few on a long list of negative outcomes of global warming.

Scientists believe that the greatest contributing factor is the use of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels emit "greenhouse gasses" into the air, most commonly carbon dioxide and methane. Carbon dioxide is a heavy gas which acts as a blanket trapping in heat and causing global warming. In turn this raises our average temperature. A nice sunny 70 degree day in January might sound appealing, but that would also mean hotter summers. Carbon dioxide comes from burning fossil fuels, whereas methane comes from landfills, animal waste, natural gas released into the atmosphere, and decaying plants. Methane is a more powerful green house gas than carbon dioxide, meaning that its global warming potential (GWP) is over twenty times higher. Decaying plants trapped in the northern permafrost are what worries scientist the most. Global Warming Examiner, John Ryden says, "These are plants ... frozen in northern permafrost that [have] trapped tremendous quantities of methane gas for millions of years. That permafrost is melting due to global warming and scientists are concerned that the methane gas will be released into the atmosphere. [Thus creating] a feedback loop where the released methane further [rises] temperatures, which then releases even more methane."

The following is a list of easy skills to develop to help reduce your carbon footprint.

    • Cut down use of fossil fuels by readjusting your thermostat or driving less.
    • Buy organic produce to discourage the use of harmful chemicals.
    • Use cleaning products that are safe for the environment.
    • Change your irredescent light bulbs into energy saving florescent bulbs.
    • Use fertilizer from compost for your garden or landscaping.
    • Eating less meat can help; 85% of Methane gas in our atmosphere is produced by livestock.
    • Reduce waste by using your leftover meat for other meals.

Will we make it out of the 21st century without the valuable skill of green living?
"Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little."

Civic Literacy in the 21st Century

    Jessica Farrar

What is Civic Literacy and why is it more important in the 21st Century than in previous centuries? Civic Literacy is knowing how to stay involved in civic life on all levels (local, state, national, global) and understanding how the government works. Civic Literacy is more important now than ever because so many people have lost interest in the boring part of politics, that it basically lets the government control. There has been a steady decline over the communities engagements and participation in politics. Civic Literacy is so important because if no one will stand up and tell the government what they want and require changes, they won't do anything for the people or their communities.

Everyone has the ability to participate in local government, many just don't know where to start. One way everyone can help his or her community is to vote! According to the Federal Election Commission, just over half of the voting age population turned out to vote at the 2000 presidential elections. That number only grew to about 57 percent in 2008. Getting registered to vote and voting is an important way that you can be involved in your community.

Another way you can get involved in this ever changing technological century is to get involved in an online community. According to a USC Annenberg School, who released a study on the impact of Internet on American Society, the internet is becoming a major part of how we participate in our civic life. As writen by Andy Carven, an internet activist and author, on a blog on pbs.org on the study, "Just over one-fifth of online community members - 20.3 percent - take action offline for a cause related to their online communities at least once a year. Nearly 65 percent of online community members say they now engage in civic causes that were new to them when they started going online, while an additional 43.7 percent say they participate in social activism more since they've joined their online communities."

There are four basic groups of skills that are a foundation on which to build a successful career. They are:

    BASIC SKILLS

    • reading

    • writing

    • mathematics

    • effective communication (speaking and listening)

    THINKING SKILLS

    • creative thinking: imaginitive, innovative ideas, etc.

    • problem solving

    • decision making: identify goals, quick decision maker, etc.

    • visualization: ability to read blueprints, sketches, etc.

    PEOPLE SKILLS

    • able to negotiate

    • leadership qualities

    • work in a team

    • cultural diversity IS CULTURAL DIVERSITY A SKILL?

    BEHAVIORAL SKILLS

    • flexability/ adaptability

    • initiative/ self direction

    • time management

    • reliability/ accountability

    • goal oriented / motivation

    • self confidence

    • integrity/ honesty/ morality

Of these four groups, 21st century employers say that behavioral skills are most important in prospective employees. As education and technical skills increase, many of the behavior skills and personal responsibility have seemingly decreased.

That's a very intriguing sentence you've ended with -- I want to know more about that. Can you give a link?

"You'd think people would know to call in sick when they're not coming to work, but that's not always the case," said Michael Kauffman, an executive at Anoplate Corp., a 175-person metal manufacturer in Syracuse, an excerpt taken from an article titled 69% Job Seekers Lack Basic Employability Skills, by Leon Lazaroff of the Chicago Tribune.

[While the AFL-CIO and National Association of Manufacturers have clashed over wage issues and foreign trade, Paul Cole, secretary-treasurer of the New York State AFL-CIO says the two groups agree that a more efficient and higher-skilled workforce can ensure that well-paying jobs are not exported.

"If we infuse education and job-training with an emphasis on `employability skills,' then we develop workers who not only can get jobs, they can keep them as well," he said.]

Who will have secure work in the 21st century?

    Sheila Hunt : Jessica Smyth

Many current jobs will be replaced by technology in the 21st Century. Rapid knowledge growth means that it is difficult for people to keep on top of what they need to know: therefore, people need to specialize. With the rapid change of technology, it is difficult for anyone to predict what jobs will remain and what new jobs will emerge. Workers need to develop higher levels of skills. Highly skilled jobs will be in high demand.

Thomas Friedman, columnist for the New York Times and Pulitzer prize winning author, wrote a book called The World is Flat.

Friedman believes that only four kinds of people will have jobs that will remain in demand in the 21st Century. He calls these people "untouchable". Untouchables come in four broad categories: Workers who are "special," workers who are "specialized", workers who are"anchored",and workers who are" flexible."
    Here are the four categories.

    • Workers who are special:
People like Michael Jordan, Bill Gates and Madonna. They have a global market for their jobs. Their jobs can never be outsourced.

    • Workers who are specialized:
from specialized lawyers, accountants, and brain surgeons. These are skills that are always in high demand.

    • Workers who are anchored:
These jobs apply to most Americans. Everyone from a hairstylist to the waitress at dinner. Chefs, plumbers, nurses, and cleaning ladies. They are anchored because they must be done from a specific location, involving face to face contact with a customer, client, or patient. These jobs generally cannot be digitized.

    • Workers who are flexible:
people who are always developing new skills to keep up with change and demand.

Friedman addresses a concern shared by many Americans: what do we tell our kids? As the competition for jobs stiffens, how do we prepare them? His suggestion is that we make ourselves "untouchables."

In the 20th Century, you could be mediocre in your job and still earn a decent living. In the 21st Century you really don't want to be just mediocre. Jobs are going to the best, smartest, most productive worker.

We simply cannot do things the same old way anymore. People must be willing to change, adapt, and most importantly, further their education.

    21st Century Skills: Critical Thinking

    Monica Teehee

type=textCritical thinking is no stranger to any of the 21st centuries, and could be dated back to our ancestors' processes of growing, gathering, and/or capturing food. Critical thinking also contributed to the invention of electricity, the production line of the automotive industry, and to the development of an application that can auto-populate the word that you have started typing.

Successful critical thinking should provide an analytical solution(s) to help resolve the researched malfunction, and/or to provide simple logical options to eliminate any variable that may have the potential to create an issue. Logical-based solutions are highly sought after by 21st century hiring employers.

    Test your critical thinking now:

    3. Among 100 applicants for a sports teacher job, it was noted that 10 had never played baseball or soccer. 75 had at least played baseball. 83 had at least played soccer. How many of the applicants had played both baseball and soccer?

    21st Century Skills in Schools

    David Jones

What do students need to survive in the 21st Century workforce? For most schools the compensation for the changing world is broken into three categories: Social, Thinking, and Digital skills.

Overall students of the 21st century
--have self-direction and productivity when working alone and with a group
--should be able to leave school and play an effective role in society.
--need to have the ability to effectively finish a task that is relevant to their goals.
--should be able to communicate in the workforce efficiently with technology.

Many schools have made a partnership to help aid their students for higher education or be effective in society. Some of these partners include Project 21st Century , P21c , Metiri Group , and others.

Most of the steps schools have taken have to do with technology. Web 2.0 is a popular example of this and has popular tools like social-networking, video-sharing, wikis, and blogs. Web 2.0 can also be adapted into a classroom or library setting (Classroom 2.0 and Library 2.00.)

    Postsecondary Training

    Bryan West

In the 21st century jobs will not only require skills, but also postsecondary training and degrees. You may have the necessary skills to compete in the job market, but not meet the job requirements of having a degree. A degree can show potential employers that you can commit to and complete a multiyear project. It will also show that you have the necessary skills of multitasking, critical thinking, and problem solving.

Each year the Department of Labor releases projected job growth for the nation. In that report they look into their crystal ball and predict the thirty top job growth areas. With the release of their 2006-2016 report, they anticipate just over 86% of job seekers will require postsecondary training. According to Florida State University, "Nationally, it has become increasingly evident that workforce needs of the 21st century will depend on education beyond the bachelors' degree."

Even the President of the United States has weighed in on the subject. President George W. Bush and President Obama have sounded the alarm for Americans to improve the country's standing in the world by seeking higher education. In a recent speech on the growing needs of the 21st century, President Obama said, "Never has a college degree been more important."

At this point I want to address non-traditional students. That is people that are thinking about going to college that finished high school five years ago or more. Now in order to pursue a degree, you must have some basic knowledge in order to be successful. Let's take a look at three areas and where you can find help online. First is Time Management . You must be able to juggle daily life and classes. Second is Student Aid . You must have the necessary funds to attend school and still be able to provide for you and/or your family. Finally you must be prepared for the academic challenges that are in front of you. Now don't be offended by this site, it has been a huge help to returning students, including me. Yes, you've got the right list.

    Tolovaj says:

Well, your list is fine, but it lacks some criticism. For instance green living is not a very simple thing. Solar and wind power has much more negative effects on environment than you listed. Consumerism (or critical approach to consumerism) should be somewhere there too. It is a matter of very simple math to find out the so-called alternative energy resources could not satisfy our lifestyles.

    A Nony Mouse says:

About the multi-lingual aspect of modern life. As someone who has done a fair amount of world travel I would like to say that it's not easy to know the language of every place you visit.

Is it more practical to learn the languages that are used most commonly around you than to try to adapt to our flat world reality? Even if it's more practical, is it actually as useful?

No -- let me tell you MY list!

    Fundamentals of Nursing

    Theory, Concepts & Applications

Theories on learning have shown that students learn better if they can see how the content will be useful to them. They understand better when presented with something concrete in addition to tackling the abstract definitions and theory. Volume 1 emphasizes the relationship between theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge to encourage each of your students to think like a nurse. This approach allows you to emphasize either theory or practice as it suits you and your students. Each chapter starts with Learning Outcomes - a checklist of what your students should know once they've completed the chapter. Meet Your Patient, also at the opening of each chapter, introduces your students to the patient they will follow and whose experiences illustrate the principles presented throughout the chapter, thus capturing their interest with real-life scenarios. Chapters are divided into two sections. Theoretical Knowledge - Knowing Why and Practical Knowledge - Knowing How reflect how information is communicated in real life and enable your students to focus on just the "why" or the "how." This is where the text's conversational tone is truly evident - the authors sound as if they are talking to your students rather than lecturing them. Headings (often phrased as questions that highlight students' concerns about the information), bulleted lists, boxes, and figures break up the text and make it more visually engaging. Care Plans are diagramed for visual learning as Care Maps. Links That Help Your Students Think Like Nurses The didactic material that you'll cover in your classroom is contained in Volume 1: Theory, Concepts and Applications. The content of this volume is systematically linked to Volume 2: Thinking and Doing in which the critical thinking introduced in Volume 1 continues to be applied, this time to a single unifying case study, to chapter content, and to the clinical procedures that are the core of Volume 2. The Giving Tree

    "Once there was a tree
and she loved a little boy."

Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older, he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave.

    ______________________________________________________________
Going green today has awoken more people than ever. As we have made our way into the 21st century we have begun to see the everlasting impressions that we have put upon our world. We know more than ever that a change is in need and respect is over due. The world has given us everything to strive further in everything we have accomplished in order to survive to the fullest. Now it's our moment to stand up and return the favor. For over 40 years this classic book has revealed a conflict that can be concluded with many different metaphors. Shel Silverstein has captured a universal audience of all ages. He has not only recognized a situation but described it beautifully and to the point in his illustrations. One that can be described involves man verses mothernature. It is a very simple, but sad reminder of unconditional love. The story starts with the relationship between a tree and the innocence of a growing boy. It unfolds the needs and wants of the human race that is put upon nature and shows the sadness as we neglect to appriciate it's unconditional sharing of love. As the boy grows into a man many years later and has used the tree for everything it has had to offer he realizes that he has taken what is most important for granted without knowing it until it is almost too late to correct. This is a great story to help share the love mothernature has helped provide for us and what we can do in return.

Listening for Success by Steve Shapiro

    By: Kara Jackson,Shirley Vega

Life skills are the answer for a successful career in the 21st century. One skill often overlooked is the art of listening. By listening we learn what the speaker is saying ,and we get a sence of how they're feeling as they talk. Sometimes we hear others speaking, but we are too busy thinking about what we are going to say in return ,to really listen.

Listening for Success by author Steve Shapiro is an insightful book for success in the business world and in life. Shapiro felt that "listening is a path to enlightenment." And that "people are unable to learn if they are talking and not listening." He also states that people who care, listen ,and people who listen, care.

Shapiro has two methods for learning to listen better. A simple method and a multi-level listening method. The simple method is to ask first , then listen. The multi-level listening is to pay attention, acknowledge what is being said, clarify what has been said, and then respond .

I agree with the author that listening is very important ,and that most do not have this skill. Many people like to talk and don't really listen to what is being saidby others. Often, people need to tell their story without being interrupted or told what to do. I think that the two methods for learning to listen are simple and to the point. People would all be more successful in the 21st century if they learn to listen.

Multilingualism an Important 21st Century Skill

    Christian Cortes

In the 21st century the ability to speak a second or third language is a great advantage in the work place. The world is connected more than ever through the media, media, and now the work place. Large businesses are growing and they are trying to find new places where they can sell their products. If your able to speak other languages it opens the doors which lead to success in your career. You might be thinking that most of the world speaks English, but this is not true. In fact 75% of the world's population don't speak English(Luddy,2008).

You don't have to speak the language fluently. It does help to be able to speak fluently, but don't get discourage there are different levels. Just know a few phrases can help with your job. A scenario your in a board room and a big client is about to come in, and he is from Mexico. If you were to say something to him in Spanish you might make him feel comftarble. This would probably make the client feel better about the deal. According to recruitment agencies being able to speak other languages can help you earn from 8 to 20 percent more in your job(Luddy,2008). Knowing another language depends on where you live. If you live in Los Angeles for example and your able to speak English and Spanish. It would probably be very handy, but if you live in in Arkansas and you speak French even thought it is a nice language. It will not be as handy as knowing Spanish.

Being Multilingual is an advantage not only in the workplace, but in life also. Someone who is multilingual is more open to other cultures. He or she would feel more comfortable around a new culture. Now at days most of the big corporation like Wal-Mart are worldwide. These type of companies are looking to hire people who are able to speak other languages. Especially if the job requires for the person to travel to other countries. There are translator, but being able to speak in your clients language is a better way of communication.

Nursing: RN versus LPN, the decision is yours.

by Geneva Holt, Samantha Austin, and Spring Pinedo

Imagine the 21st century without medical professionals. Nurses are an important part of the medical field. Which profession is more useful Registered Nurses (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN)? What are their skills? How are the two professions different? This information from www.healthmad.com/nursing/lpn LPN versus RN: Different paths to nursing and www.ehow.com/facts. What is the difference between LPN and RN?

The LPN studies Nursing Arts and Science with a background in other science and humanity. Their function is a dependent role that requires a supervision or assistance from RN or other medical professionals. The primary focus provides direct patient care, including the determination of patient status and the evaluation outcomes. Career paths include nursing homes and other long-term care environments. Some responsibilities are taking blood pressure, pulse and temperature, shots, change dressings, clean and bandage wounds, administer medication and monitor patient condition. The LPN has one year of education and their certification includes a diploma or certificate and a national licensing examination.

The RN gains a broader and deeper understanding of necessary topics and a more specialized knowledge including physiology, pharmacology, clinical practice, delivery systems, research utilization, resource management and team functioning. Career paths include hospitals and medical offices, with a greater potential for advancement and wages. RN responsibilities include taking temperatures, administering shots, developing patient care plan as well as managing and assigning tasks to the LPN and Nurse Assistant. RN education includes either a two year Associate degree or a four year Bachelor of Science degree and a national licensing examination.

The decision is yours. Based on length of time you have for education, a look at potential wages, and the consideration of the stress level, your decision can be made. A greater mastery of the relevant information and detail is the basic difference.

How Social Media is Changing the Way We Communicate

    By Stacy Roth

Wikipedia defines social media as media designed to disseminate through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media supports the human need for social interaction, using Internet - and web-based technologies to transform broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supports the democratization of knowledge and information; transforming people from content consumers into content producers. Businesses also refer to social media as user-generated content (UGC) or consumer-generated media (CGM). Social media utilization is believed to be a factor in the idea that the current period in time will be defined as the . Attention Age
Social media is changing the face of human communication through technology. Some people these days believe we have become either too busy or simply too lazy to write letters or chat in person like people were forced to in the past. With today's methods of communicating it is simply not necessary to communicate in any other way. The new methods have become way too convenient. We can do so much with social media technologies now such as reconnecting with friends and family, report on the weather, traffic, and interesting things in their lives, gather data, market and advertize your company, or share pictures and videos with your friends worldwide. We have become so habituated with doing everything on the Internet, like checking the news and updates on Facebook and Twitter, that it just seemed natural to add more possibilities to make it even more convenient. I agree with Soren Gordhamer when he wrote, "After all, you didn't choose the editors at newspapers and other publications, but you did choose the people and groups that you follow on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media."
Companies have even started using it as a tool for marketing and advertizing. For example, on Twitter you can "retweet" (RT) their post to win prizes or help get the word out about a certain special they may be running. They also use it as a means of gathering data for research. On Twitter, you can search for a certain word or phrase and it will pull up any "tweets" that contain the information you are searching for. With that information you can do many things, like data visualization. Jer Thorp researched the phrase " Good Morning", on Twitter and displayed the results on a 3D map. He color coded it from different times people had posted their tweet with red being more on the east coast time zone and green being more on the west coast, the more current time according to his location. Here is that link, Datavisualization.
It is now so easy to connect with friends and family using Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, LinkedIn, Skype, Friendster, Google Wave, Loopt, Friend Feed, Flickr, Photobucket, Picasa, Bebo, BigTent, Orkut, Skyrock, Pandora, Netflix, FmyLife, Google Talk, AIM, and MSN Messenger. These sites offer anything from an update of 140 characters, to posting pictures, videos, links, maps, and live chat to people all around the world. It should be fascinating to see what the future and its updated technology will mean for this important and forward thinking process of communicating.

Over-All Computer Skills in the 21st Century

    Rebecca

Computer skills in the 21st century are necessary in virtually every part of daily life. Computers are used in jobs, schools, and at home. We can no longer avoid using computers, and casual users will have to develop their skills. It's easy to get stuck at a certain level in your skills and not continue to improve, but it won't be to your benefit.

Being able to use a computer at a professional level is very useful in careers today. People who work on computers for their jobs have many things they must know how to use. They have to know how to use spreadsheets. A spreadsheet is a program used to display financial information. They also have to know how to use word processing programs to communicate with other employees and businesses. The internet is also a big thing they have to know how to use proficiently. Maybe the most important quality in a job situation is being able to learn how to use new programs quickly. Clearly, the lack of computer skills may be a contributing factor if you are turned down for a job.

Schools also now require students to be able to use computers at a very basic level. They must be able to use word programs for papers they have to write. They must be able to use the internet well enough to check their e-mail for assignments, and to do research. They also have computer classes that a student can take to help them be able to use computers better, and to help them prepare for writing letters for a professional career.

Computers are now a big part of home life in the 21st century. People have to know at least how to set up and turn on the computer, or else they have to pay someone to hook it up for them. Again, the internet plays a big role at home as well. At home the internet is used mostly for communicating with others through e-mail or chat sites. Also computers at home are a main source of entertainment in the 21st century. With all the games, music, blog sites you are sure to be entertained for hours. Being able to use a computer has become much more important in the 21st century than anyone could have predicted.

Benefits of being Bilingual in the 21st Century

    Nouf Bin Azzaz

Languages are one of the influential tools that people use to communicate effectively with each other. Learning two or more languages benefits people in many ways.
Being a bilingual enhance people's personalities and improve their social skills. To illustrate, when a person speaks a language besides his own language, he is more likely to have the chance to communicate with others from different cuntries and learn about other cultures as well as meeting new people. In addition to that, bilingual people can imrove their knowledge by reading in those two languages they have.
Another benefit of being bilingual is that individuals who are bilingual tend to show a better job on exams than those who are not. That is definately a curriculum benefit. To ad to that, bilinguals find it easier and faster to get a job than monolingual people because most institutions require their employees to have more than one language for certain jobs such as secretarial work and public relations work. On the cognitive level, learning and speaking another language has a positive effect on intellectual growth and mental development.
Overall, the benefits of being bilingual are numerous and can provide so many good things to the society and the people. I think it should be required to teach other languages to children from the time they start school to the time they graduate because the earlier someone is introduced to another language the better the results are. If ibilingual is this beneficial in the 21st century, imagine what the future will offer to those who are bilingual.

Ability to change quickly for your work

    Adam Brown

In the working world, you must be able to adapt quickly in order to keep your job. The ability to change quickly is almost impossible for some and for others its thought as a new opportunity to better yourself(cite). Some people have different ways of dealing with change. Some submit and work with the new job they have been given. Other people will end up doing the job but will wish that it was the old way and others will ignore the new way all together(cite). Despide what your opinion is on the change your job is making, you must accept it and continue on so that you may get higher up in the company.

Why are Survival Skills Important in The 21st Century

    By Oscar Ugalde

Survival skills are very important in the 21st century because other companies will try to over-run you. Not having these skills will put you in the bottom of the industry. In the Industrial Age the main skills you needed to survive and prosper in the business arena were loyalty and strong work ethic. Survival skills are much harder today, because we are working harder and longer with minimum raise. It is hard to find good employees that are dedicated and honest to help out your company. Employees don't often care about your company coasting you money, and employees like that are not suitable for that type of environment.

Stress is a big problem with you survival skills because it will interfere with getting your job done. Not only do some have stress in their jobs but also at home, you have to learn how to balance your stress to in order to achieve your goal. Good communication skills are important, to reach out to people to get good clientele and to superb you company. More and more businesses are disappearing because of lack of the survival skills. Knowing them will benefit you by keeping your company up and running successfully.

Managing Stress in the 21st Century

    By: Tania Barrios

Managing stress in the twenty first century has become a vital skill. Stress has been associated with several mental, social and physical problems. In the twenty first century; stress has become so common that according to The American Institute of Stress (AIS), it is "America's No. 1 Problem." In fact, AIS reported, that approximately 75 - 90 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress related problems.
The hectic life of this century has brought a downfall to businesses, families, and careers. What are the contributing factors to this increased stress of our century? There are a lot of factors to it; perhaps the most important is the lack of knowledge of stress management.
More employers are looking for people who are able to work under pressure and stress. In fact, several employees think that they may get fired or lose their job if they do not show that they cannot perform their job under pressure or stress.
Under stress none of the other skills necessary to succeed can be achieved if the individual does not know how to manage their problems with stress. Also under the influence of stress we are more likely to overlook greater opportunities in our daily life; we are also less effective in task that we complete. Our outlook on life when burdened with stress seems drastically less optimistic than if we don't have stress. We are not able to pay attention and learn from our experiences.
Stress has been experienced for centuries and it will never go away, but our success with it depends on how we handle it. We can make the most of it if we don't let stress take us over. We can actually turn it into something good if we know how to manage it. Helpguide.org, suggest to, take control of our life "You have a lot more control than you might think. In fact, the simple realization that you're in control of your life is the foundation of stress management."
Yes we live in stressful times and there is nothing we can do to stop or slow down progress, but the control is in our hands individually. We determine when to say stop and turn off the power button. But will we do it? Can we do it? The answer is up to us.

    Helping keep the Earth green

    Sarah Howerton

Living in the world today is very demanding, and calls for us to help with what we can in taking care of Earth because it is the only one we have. So once it is gone we are in trouble.
Many people are unaware of the damage thats occuring to the ozone and our planet. The ozone consists of "good" and "bad". The ozone is made of three oxygen atoms. Ground level ozone consists of oxides of nitrogen and a variety of organic compounds. The ozone at ground level is usually "bad" from all the pollution. Automobiles, factories, and many other chemical substances are the reason for this pollution. The ozone layer that is "good" occurs within 10 to 30 miles above the Earth's surface. The harms of the ozone range from inflammation to chest pains and coughing. There are a range of things you can do to help the ozone.

The Importance of Fantasy Sports in the 21st Century Workplace

    By Rob Swift

I don't like broccoli, never have. I've despised that vile weed since I was a child. My mother would tell me, "just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't healthy." I can't make the argument that playing fantasy sports is healthy, if anything it is probably tremendously unhealthy. However, despite what is a fairly popular misconception, fantasy sports are a relevant occupational activity in the lives of many people in the 21st century.

So why is it important to have at least a working knowledge of a game that was once part of a sub-culture dominated by adolescents? The simple fact is that in today's social, as well as corporate setting, it is more than just a game. More and more people in this country are playing fantasy sports every year; its becoming an alternative form of networking.

A 2008 study shows that over 27 million Americans play at least one form of a fantasy sport; most play fantasy football. That is almost 10% of the current U.S. population. The majority of people playing are males, over 37 years old, college educated, married with children, and own a home in the suburbs. Doesn't really sound like a kid's game anymore does it?

The study also presented data that showed forty percent of people surveyed said that employee camaraderie increased in the workplace amongst those playing in fantasy sports leagues. The study said that while production might suffer from the increased interaction, communication levels were probably enhanced. Additionally, 36 percent of the people surveyed said that fantasy sports in their workplace was a positive influence and many also said that participation in different leagues have increased their ability to make valuable business contacts.

Lastly, the bottom line is always about money and the fantasy sports industry is no exception. Players spent over $800 million dollars in FY2008 which produced a total market impact of over $4.48 billion dollars. Someone has to produce all of those fantasy magazines and run the websites.

In reality, fantasy sports will probably not grow much more than it has. But it is a long cry from the 1950's when Wilfred Winkenbach created a game where the players formed a team from then current professional golfers and would win with the lowest cumulative score of a given PGA tournament .

    Global Warming Effects

    James Whitley

Every year global warming is becoming worse, affecting everything from the climate of the planet to the people and animals. Constantly burning fossil fuels have encouraged the trapping of the heat gases creating the greenhouse effect in the atmosphere. According to NASA, 1998 and 2005 have been two of the hottest years on record within the past decade,. The U.S contributes 25% of emissions into the atmosphere, even though the U.S only makes up 5% of the worlds population. The melting of the polar ice caps is a result of global warming. Because of this, the Earths water levels have risen considerably resulting in frequent floods, eroding of riverbanks and mingling of freshwater and seawater sources leading to extinction of several marine species. Global warming has had many adverse effects including climate change, amounts of rainfall, the composition of ecosystems and temperature labels. There are several species that are in danger of becoming extinct among them are Polar Bears, the Tufted Puffin, American Pike, Canada Lynx, Sugar Maple, and the Leather-back Turtle. The human population will also be affected, parasites may migrate to temperate regions, diseases will likely spread. It is predicted that malaria and asthma will spread around the world. In 2008 more than 220,000 people lost their lives from natural disasters. Hurricanes, as droughts, floods, wildfires, and heat waves, have become more common all over the world. We must all begin to do something about it because global warming effects everyone in the world. But on another note we are over do for a ice age.The last ice age lasted about100,000 years. It was interrupted with a warm spell a period of 10,000 years ago. That was 13,000 years ago.

    The Unfinished Revolution

    Heather Byars

This book is an interesting look into the differance between old school learning and modern technology. The writers believe that the culture we grow up in has alot to do with the approach we take in teaching our youth today. For example, if you take a child from a more cultured area
where they are taught more then one second language at an early age; that child will grow to be more well rounded in all aspects of life. It is becoming more evident to a number of educators and the general public as a whole that successful education in the 21st century requires helping children to move beyond the more traditional goals. Thus allowing them to be more productive members of todays society.
Everyone I spoke with on this subject includeing myself, agreed that taking old school values and integrating them with 21st century technology is a very inovative way of teaching.

    The Green Century

    Hector Ortega

It seems like lately all you hear in the TV, the radio, and the Internet is about being green. The thing is we don't really know where to start, or what to do, how can the society help the environment?
That's where The Green Book comes in; this simple guide introduces the reader to an eco-friendly way of life where small steps make a good change for the environment. From the work place to health and beauty, the book gives information about what difference these small steps can do. Between chapters celebrities tell you how they have changed to being green. The reading is simple and interesting; highly recommended for people who are interested in making a change; for those who care about the future and the world we leave to the future generations.

2/3 of all beverage containers in the United States never get recycled. And in 2005 just on non carboneted beverages; 29.8 billion bottles were sold. That is almost 20 billion of bottles that are go to landfilling or littering or incineration. From: Water, Water Everywhere: The Growth of Non-carbonated Beverages in the United States

One of the main concerns in the 21st century is the environment, and being able to take care of it is an important skill. Most of our generation knows about the danger of wasting the resources left in the planet; it is not just about climate change and the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. As resources decrease the well being of all life in the planet decreases too. In the 21st environmental and recycling skills are needed; using less paper, riding a bicycle instead of a car, turning of the lights and opening the windows, dividing waste into paper plastic and glass, etc. If only just a few of these kinds of skills were to be applied in every household in just America it would be like giving the earth a break. Letting it rest for all that it has done for us.

    Exercising

    Yuji Natori

Technology has made tremendous progress in the 21st century. We can easily and quickly get all imformations we need using internet, we can buy anything on line with just clicking, and we can talk to people all over the world. Also, we can easily have fun using a computer or playing a video game by just ourselves the inside of houses. Those things dramatically changed our lives easier and much more convenient. Moreover, being able to use a computer is a necessary skill now because many people are required to use it in their jobs or schools. However, is sitting in front of a compuiter a whole day good for our health? Is using an i-phone or playing a video game a whole day healthy? As a reslut of that, our physical strengths have been getting weaker than people's in the past. In fact, it is proved by physical tests that current high school students are physically weaker than high school students ten years ago. To make matters worse, there is full of fast food nowadays. We sit in front of a computer a whole day with eating a hamburger in this stressful world. It is very unhealthy. Then, we need to do some exercise periodically because exercising helps us a lot to keep being healthy. For instance, exercising is good for the prevention of sickness or illness, and reducing stress. Also, to keep exercising as a custom can protect us from life-style related diseases. Lastly, there are the data that shows the death rate of people walking two miles in a day on average is much below than the death rate of people walking one mile in a day. Thus, to keep being healthy with excerising is an important 21st century skill.

When did you exercise last time? You should do some exercise periodically for your health instead of using a computer or playing a video game. This book helps you to keep being healthy in many various ways such as fitness, stretching, strengthenig and so on. For example, you can get to know how to stretch perfectly according to this book. Save the planet, become a vegetarian. Factory farms of the meat and dairy industry are polluting our world and the demand for meat is on the rise. As people are living longer with the many advances in modern medicine, looking at a "cleaner" way of life in the future certainly has its draw. With links to diet related illnesses such as: heart disease and osteoporosis, forgoing meat and dairy could save your life as well.

The mass production of meat and dairy is a direct result of the demand for these products. Americans are simply consuming more meat. As reported in the 2001-2002 Agricultural Fact Book, "In 2000, total meat consumption reached 195 pounds per person, 57 pounds above average annual consumption in the 1950s."

As a result of meeting this great demand the consequences have been deforestation, water, and air pollution, just to name a few. "The livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global." As stated in a summary of a 2006 United Nations Report .

Vegetarians don't have any more supernatural abilities than anyone else. What sets them apart is that they have made a conscious choice to eat a plant-based diet. With the added benefit to living lightly on this planet, their choice also promotes healthy living. In her book, The Kind Diet, Alicia Silverstone reveals some intriguing facts, such as, "...dairy-free countries have the lowest rates of osteoporosis on Earth. In fact, the more milk a population consumes, the weaker its bones get."

Alicia is an actress and an activist. Her book is a very practical resource for starting a plant-based diet. She definitely understands the challenges this way of life brings and for that reason she dedicates three chapters as degrees of commitment: Flirting, Going Vegan, and Becoming a Superhero. In addition, she confronts the concerns a novice vegetarian might have about proper nutrition. No matter what level of commitment you find yourself at, this book provides everything you need to make well informed choices and get started. She has included helpful tools such as: lists of alternative foods, a seven day vegan meal plan, two chapters of recipes, and even tips for eating out. This book has the potential of changing your life and the world you live in.

"Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." Albert Einstein. As quoted from her book.

The Advantage of Firearm Use and Defensive Tactics

    Steven Hayes

In the 21st century, nothing is totally certain. Things may seem chaotic now, but what about when life as we know it ceases to be? There will come a time when the modern pleasures of society have been stripped away to show the frail naked body of society. When all is lost, do you want to be the person who is being turned into a human slave by some kind of post -apocalyptic warlord, or do you want to take control and save your family and friends?

the book Tactical Reality is a good choice to pick up and learn from cover to cover. This book doesn't just cover the use of multiple firearms, but goes over tactics from years past. They author has had years of experience and has included lots of details and little quips of information for the inexperienced gun handler. The book is even geared towards people who have never handled a firearm or been in a situation that would warrant one. You can pick this book up with absolutely no knowledge on the subject and put it down feeling confident that you can protect yourself and your family. when times take a turn for the worse, this could be the only thing between you and human slavery.

If you haven't seen the movie Mad Max or The Road Warrior, you might as well do yourself a favor and get those under your belt. it's nice to have an idea of what is to come and those 2 movies seem pretty accurate to life. If this book catches your interest i would also recommend reading the art of war by Lao Tzu. This book is very old but every military genius in life has followed the tactics drawn out in this book and it always leads to victory. Self defense is going to be priceless in this coming age, so 23 bucks for your livelihood isn't even really a question.

    Surviving The Great Outdoors

    Samantha Austin

"Girl's body found, believed the last" was the headline of the Arkansas Democrat Gazette June 15, 2010. A raging flood caught campers off guard over the weekend; twenty people were found dead by Monday. This isn't the first news story of death at a campground over 30 people die each year due to hiking alone and that doesn't include the weekend campers or those who go for a quick jog in the parks. The world is a dangerous place and I am not talking about urban crimes; I am talking about the natural world.

People are so comfortable with their refrigerators, pre-processed meats, and grocery stores packed with all the essentials, but what if we didn't have all of that? Would we survive out in the woods for weeks till help found us? Not unless you knew what to do. Surviving is not just a 19th century skill or even just a 21st century skill it is a mandatory life skill. It is sad to say many people have lost this skill thinking that paved roads and air conditioned housing will protect them.

Nature is all around us, and it is deadly when you are clueless of its mechanics. Take for instance walking outside to check your mail box and under your car is a snake hiding... you move to close to the car and it strikes... now you are laying on the ground holding your leg wondering if poison is coursing through your veins. If it is a poisonous snake good chances are you will be dead in twenty minutes if not treated, too bad the hospital is thirty minutes away and you have wasted five trying decide what to do. Just a little tip, take a belt or a cloth and tie it above the bite tightly then try to slow your heartbeat. This will increase your chance of survival if the snake was poisonous.

How can people honestly believe that they don't need survival skills... are they that oblivious to the "real world"? Probably so, but if you are reading this then maybe you have a clue that the world is not so buttercup and butterfly. Nature can kill the unsuspecting and it does on a daily occurrence. Just remember the world is truly survival of the fittest, is your mind fit enough?

    Advanced Communication

    Spring Pinedo

As technology continues to grow so does our need for advanced communication, reaching millions of people around the world. The internet has made this possible and has become the for front of everyday lives. Being able to access and surf the world wide web is an important 21st century skill, weeding out older forms of advertising and instructions. One must be able to sign up, sign in, and explore without getting lost in the tangle of cobwebs.

Blogging has become the addicting past time for people everywhere; it is hard to walk into a store and not see them advertising their page on Myspace, Facebook, Twitter.... Find us on the web, they say and to that people reply by clicking the "like this" button below their picture. Paper ads have become a thing of the past, instead emails letting you know the latest sales are sent directly to your inbox.

It is an ever growing world we live in, people are constantly on the move. Making friends can be hard, keeping up with them is even harder. Sites are dedicated to keeping you in touch with those frequently traveling companions. It has become the social standard of the 21st century, that even now our phones are used simply for texting and reading current emails.

To top off all the joys of the internet, I must add the entertainment value. You can download everything from music to movies. It is unnecessary to go to the store to buy a book, not when Amazon offers the new Kindle, a small device that holds in it a library of books that you buy and download without leaving your desk.

To do any of this you must know your internet; it is a skill even children must learn. As the world wide web grows, we must grow our knowledge of its workings. Without this important skill, you will be lost in the dark ages.

    Job Interview Skills

    Oscar Meza

These days, knowing how to conduct oneself in a job interview is an important and essential skill, especially in an economy where competition is strong. An interview could make the difference between getting hired or being shown the door. In addition to a good resume, there are certain techniques that could be followed in order to be successful in a job interview, such as; proper attire, etiquette, and being prepared to answer questions.
Wearing proper attire in a job interview plays a big role in one's appearance. Pay close attention to the small details of your grooming, like your fingernails, face, or hair; though make sure not to wear anything distracting. For men, wearing a suit or slacks, a button-down shirt, a tie, and a jacket or sports coat would be the most preferred apparel. Women should wear a business suit, dress, or a simple skirt with a blouse. The point is to present yourself as a professional and responsible applicant.
Showing good etiquette in a job interview provides the interviewer with a lasting first impression. Simple actions are the most important, such as smiling, showing confidence, making eye contact, using proper vocabulary, and giving a firm handshake. An applicant with these traits would be more likely to receive a job offer.
The heart of the interview is, of course, the questions you are asked, and for that you must be prepared. First, arrive early, at least ten minutes before it is scheduled to start. For every question that you are asked, keep your answers positive. Take notes while you are being interviewed. Bring notes for common questions like "What is one of your strengths?" or "What is one of your weaknesses?" When time allows, ask your questions. Though, do not ask about salary unless the job is being granted. Also, be familiar with the job you are applying for. The more you know about it, the better you can answer and ask questions.
By following the above mentioned techniques of proper attire, etiquette, and being prepared to answer questions, it would give you a great opportunity to succeed in a job interview. If you are interested and want to know more about gaining interview skills the books listed below contain valuable information that would give you a leg up on the competition.

How Internet Marketing is Changing the Game

    By John Owen

John Wanamaker, the father of traditional marketing said "Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half." The rise of the internet has permanently changed the way the sellers sell, and how the buyers buy. With traditional marketing you had limited choices of how to connect with your potential customers. And they all boil down to buying advertisements. Whether it be: on television, radio, in newspapers, or on billboards. But the internet offers a host of new and creative ways to connect with customers. Yes there are straight up ad's on the internet but there are also: forums, interactive websites, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. All of which offer unique ways to connect to your market.

The hit television show Lost consistently had 10 to 15 million viewers, which is illustrated by this chart found on wikipedia. This television ad pricing chart from Ad Age, shows us that buying airtime for Lost would cost $328,000; add on top of that $350,000, which gaebler.com says is the average cost of producing a television commercial. The New York Times circulation for the Sunday edition is 1.4 million copies. Gaebler.com has an ad in the New York Times priced at $1,196.00. And for that price you will get a one column inch black and white ad. According to Eric Arvidson the cost of advertising on a nationally syndicated radio show is around 30,000. But hosting a website will only cost 7 to 15 dollars a month, as conveniently shown in this chart at findmyhosting.com. And what will it cost you to open an account on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter or YouTube? Not a penny. All these companies allow you viable marketing opportunities for free. You can still buy ad space on these websites, but when you place an advertisement on Facebook you control the cost. Pay per click ads on Facebook greatly vary, but you can bet you'll pay much less than half a buck per click. With television, radio, and print ad's you're paying just to get your ad in front of the consumer and hoping they pay attention to it. With internet advertising you only pay once the consumer has not only looked at your ad, but taken action and clicked on your ad as well.

What would happen if the ad campaign that the high priced advertising agency devised bombs? There isn't a whole lot anyone can do if the public doesn't respond to your ad as well as the test groups did. But advertisements online can be fixed in hours if not minutes. Now what if you find a trend in your ad's that are working? With internet marketing you can adapt the ad campaign to emphasize the elements that work and drop the ones that aren't. The dynamic nature of online marketing is even more beneficial than it's low cost.

With traditional marketing you have limited choices when trying to reach your target audience. Do you want your ad seen by men or women and in what age bracket? The choices don't get much more specific than that. Now consider Facebook. Of their 400,000,000 active users, they already know what their age is, where they live, in what industry they work and where they got their degree; they know what bands their users listen too, what their hobbies are and what movies they watch. They know who their best friend are, and what their relationship status is. They even know what their user's favorite colors are. So if you want your ad to be seen by men who are 26 years old, who live in Pasco Washington, work in water treatment, are single, listen to Indy bands, build model airplanes and their favorite color is orange; ducttapemarketing.com will tell you to advertise on Facebook.

Traditional marketing cost too much for the weak guarantee it offers in return, it's methods of marketing quickly become unwieldy and difficult to maneuver, and the audience is too broad for most businesses. Internet marketing is cheap, easily steered, and can be laser focused on your target audience. I can't help but wonder if Mr. Wanamakers attitude toward marketing would change if he were doing business in the 21st century.

    Team Players

    Wally Dane

To be succesfull you really have to be a team player. You cannot build a great team without great players. "When it comes to having good people on a team, you have two choices; train them or trade for them." A better team always begins with you. This book's title " Qualities of a Team Player" author John C. Maxwell, I would recommend for the motivation and flexibility to become a team player in the business world. There are two different issues the first is collaboration, which is working together agressively. The second is cooperation which is working together agreeably. Each iindividual is gifted in one area or another and compliments should be forthcoming. " The harder you work the harder it is to surrender,"spoken by Vince Lombardi. Responsibility is a huge requirement in becoming a succesfull team player. Hard work and striving for excellence also can benefit you in the business climate. Enthusiasm is a major positive attitude necessary in becoming a team player.Goal setting with a persons realistic ability is extremely important and benefical to continually strive for his or her dreams.Writing down the goals and reviewing along with the accomplishments, can give him or her self confidence which is valued in becoming a team player.A self-starter can be an asset to a team as a team plater.

    Telepresence Technology

    Omar Almusaiteer

By the 21st century, the world has achieved a great deal in communication technology. With the great invention of the Telepresence technology, people can be working everywhere and anywhere at the same time through face-to-face collaboration. For example, a person that is in New York City can give a presentation in Tokyo, Japan while he is still in New York, or a professor from Harvard University can give a lecture at three or more different locations around the world at the same time.

The Telepresence uses the hologram technology which is, according to Wikipedia, "a technique that allows the light scattered from an object to be recorded and later reconstructed so that it appears as if the object is in the same position relative to the recording medium as it was when recorded. The image changes as the position and orientation of the viewing system changes in exactly the same way as if the object was still present, thus making the recorded image or hologram appears three-dimensional."

This technology has been demonstrated by many companies such as Telstra and Cisco. Cisco's telepresence technology uses high-definition cameras and TV screens instead of transmitting hologram images to make executives feel like they are having in-person meeting. This new technology would offer the 21st century a new revolution in communication technology that would help organizations in different fields, such as:

Education: it improves the level of education to outsourcing professors and talents from around the world to teach and give lectures.

Businesses and organizations: it gives executives, talents, resources, and decision makers opportunity to meet together in a different fashion and a timely manner from anywhere to one place.

Medicaid: it can bring doctors and specialists from around the world to help and supervise during surgeries or emergency times.

    CNN using TelePresence technology

    Omar Almusaiteer

The TelePresence technology is now available in big organizations and it's been used by CNN news channel on the election night. The video show Jessica Yellin, a CNN correspondent, beamed from Chicago to the studio in New York City where Wolf Blitzer and the rest of the team were covering election returns.

    Krista Huff

A higher education is a necessity to be successful in the 21st century. The number of people choosing to pursue a college degree has increased exponentially since the 20th century. "By 2000, 27.8% of men and 23.6% of women had 4 or more years of college compared to 1940 where as only 5.5% of men and 3.8% of women had attended at least 4 years of college,"(Wayne Camara, Earnest Kimmel, 2005).
"Higher education has assumed an increasing central role in all modern societies... Most countries are having a continuing unmet demand for higher education," (Philip Altbach, 1998). Many people are seeking more advanced knowledge because it is hard to find a decent and well paying job without a college degree, and today's society calls for more money. Life is not cheap. However not only does furthing one's education bring in a bigger pay check it is always benneficial to keep up with the updated information and the new discoveries made, especially in the modern society.

    Using New Media for Marketing

    Brian Hunt

Internet can be an unusual yet profitable place to get your ideas or products out to the public. Traditional means of marketing have included newspapers, television, billboards and any form of paper advertising. Now a days that is becoming with the use of internet. According to BIGresearch.com "online user reviews have the biggest influence on consumer electronics purchases, with 43.7 percent of purchases affected by word of mouth." This is quite stagering considering most people have or can get access to the internet. Many things influence people to purchase products but the reviews of others being the number one factor is important in understanding why it is so vital to considering using the internet as your main tool of marketing.
Ads on the side of pages actually distract people often. The use of social media seems to be the trend in success with advertising. The use of blogs, podcasts, and other websites like Facebook or MySpace seem to be creating a much bigger audience for getting ideas or products across. Online presense is much more effective than costly traditional broadcasting and print advertising.
Not only can you save considerable money with this for of media it also allows for constant control of your advertising. At any point the sites can be changed to offer different deals, giveaways and other promotional offers. When controlling a website the monitoring of the number of hits, time of hits, and common links can be available and very useful to the person running it such a site.
At times people often wonder how to get started on this new type of marketing. An easy and concise book that can be very helpful has been written two women, one being the founder of eWomen Network, Inc. How to Say It: Marketing with New Media is a book intended for anyone who is looking to or is currently using online media to target a specific audience. Driving Smart

Parents, listen up! More vehicle accidents these days are contributed to the fact that the drivers are lacking the knowledge and experience. We want our teens to be as safe as they can be driving. We can't give them the experience...but we CAN give them the knowledge. Here's just the product to do it. 'The Art of Intelligent Driving' DVD. What was originally a boring old book for these average non-reading teens...is now an intense, attention-getting 93min DVD...and it works! You're welcome Parents...and everyone else who is driving out there. And in the 21st century, driving is certainly not going anywhere.

"There is a lot that should go into driver training to make all of us safer drivers and reduce accidents. Unfortunately, after the typical driver training classes we go out on the road and learn through trial and error - and sometimes with fatal results. There is simply too much knowledge about handling a car that drivers are never taught. Consequently most of us drive around thinking that we're safe - until something unexpected happens and we' re immediately forced outside of our comfort zone. All of us need to know more about how to be a safer, more intelligent driver." - Jonathan Kinberg, Host of The Art of Intelligent Driving
