Communication skills for the 21st century
Coy Holmes
Communication is the process of transferring information from one source to another. This process is used by people every day. People were communicating long before the invention of paper or computers. People who needed to communicate over distances traveled on foot or animal. Mailing by train, telegraph and the invention of the telephone were huge ways that changed the way of communication. They made communication more efficient than ever before.Effective communication in today's world requires more than the ability to read and type text. People communicate with one another in many other, different, difficult ways.
-Computer skills
AOL online/Internet
Learning how to use chat rooms as well as e-mails and Internet for information is a vital way of communication that everyone can use, trading thoughts and wisdom and knowledge that we share on the Internet. You need to have the skills to use many different programs if you want to communicate on the computer, such as Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel and Power Point, and that's just a few of them.
-Myspace
Communication on Myspace and Facebook is very simple. You need to have the skill to make a Myspace profile including having the knowledge of putting pictures onto your profile as well as quotes and other information about you, your hobbies, your likes and dislikes, and your feelings. Instant messaging and putting information on your profile are ways of communication for this particular category. Instant messaging lets you talk to someone who is also on the website. they could be on the computer or even on their phone or you could be on yours, only if you have the application.
-Telephone
The invention of the telephone gave people the opportunity to communicate with almost any other user. It allowed people talk to another with actually being present. the telephone over the years has changed from spinning a dial to pressing buttons to voice command signal to touch screen. Telephones have also improved in size over the years. They have came a long ways from being a huge hassle to carry around to fitting in the palm of your hand.
-Public News Media
The media is a very resourceful way to communicate and get information out. Media is used in many different ways helpful ways such as the newspaper, computer, internet, TV, pictures, magazines, radio and more. Every one of these is just as effective as the next. Media is a great form of communication that will never stop inventing other ways to get the news out to the people.
Good communication skills are an absolute must in our Information Age. Technology is undergoing rapid change and new and improved technological advances seem to appear daily. No one knows what our communication skills and practices will become: just expect the unexpected.

Cross-Cultural Communication
Felipe
Cross-cultural communication or intercultural communication is people from different cultural backgrounds attempting to communicate. In today's global business, the demand for understanding individuals from different origins is increasing. It is not easy to learn well about other cultures; however, there are several skills and principles that would certainly help a business man to communicate and create business relations with individuals from a different culture.
Currently there are many jobs which are related to international relations, such as business executive, journalism, university/college professor, personnel manager, international business and many other types of jobs that requires people who are able to communicate with aliens. To illustrate, it is very important to have skills in the 21st century, such as know a second language, which would help a person to understand and communicate with people from other cultures; also, it is very important to know how to deal with aliens in order to prevent misunderstandings in business.
In order to communicate with people from other regions, people should have the skill of understanding the cultural differences, such as the communications styles, for instance, in some cultures is impolite to speak loudly while in others is quite common speak loudly in order to demonstrate excitement; in some cultures when people raise their voices in a conversation, they could be demonstrating that they are angry or quite unhappy with something while in other cultures it could be a sign of happiness. Also, attitudes in conflict can be quite different in different cultures, for example, in some cultures it is best to avoid conflict while in other cultures it can be a positive thing.
In order to have a more profound understanding of other cultures, direct experience would be the best way to understand better people from other origins; for instance, moving or traveling to a country where it is possible to learn more about it. However, sometimes it is not so easy to move or travel to another country. Thus, a good beginning is to listen to foreign music, try to meet people from other cultures, inform yourself about their costumes and anything that would make you closely related to that culture.
Being able to speak a second language and being able to communicate well became a very important skill of the 21st century; for business or even just for traveling, these are quite good skills to acquire.

25% Updating personal Web sites or online profiles
Social networking is still developing in both its audience and its uses. The business community has only just begun to use this tool as a means for sales and marketing. The internet is fast becoming the strongest form of communication. Like the introduction of the cell phone not that long ago, this form of communication will fast become an asset in our lives and offer many opportunities as it evolves.

Writing in the 21st Century
BY: Tameca Simpson
In the 21st century, we work, talk, and play with people who are far from us. We have friends and coworkers all over the world. We stay connected with each other through the written word. The means of sharing a story are changing so fast that 21st century writing is physically different from writing before. Back in the day when someone thought of writing, usually it just required a pen and a piece of paper. Nowadays, there are webpages, texting, IM,and computergame chat. Still, there is one main purpose in writing: to tell our story as clearly as possible.
A few examples of why writing is so important:
- Writing lets us use the new media technology develops.
- Writing allows us to communicate with people from other countries, and helps us develop greater understanding of different people. .
- Written language is a necessity for work and school.
- With texting, a lot of our social lives are written, too.
- Writing is a way of learning.
With most things in life there are proper skills that are required. Writing is one of them.
A few skills to maintain writing include:
- Getting started, having an idea of what to write
- Organizing your writing .
- Knowing the specific subject to write about, and not drifting off to another off the topic subject.
- Thinking about your audience and keeping them interested.
Cell Phone Literacy
Kimberly Flores
It was in 1983 when the first portable cell phone was commercialized by Motorola with the Motorola Dyna TAC 1800x. It was a 13 inch long device, weighed 28 ounces and was primarily used in cars. The cell phones we use today have come along way from making a simple phone call in your car. The technology of cell phones over the past few years have greatly improved since the Dyna TAC and has changed the way people rely on the mobile phone. The usage of cell phone is definitely a 21st century skill that most people need to know.Cell phones today are used for the simple task of communication to further task of reading an excel document or GPS navigation. As of 2007 there were 250,000,000 cell phone user in the United States and is still growing rapidly. The usage of cell phones will continue to grow into the daily device used for daily task and evetually everyone will need to know the skill it takes to use a cell phone.
Basic applications of cell phones include:
- Phone calls
- SMS Text messaging
- Phone Book
- Alarm Clock
- E-Mail
- Digital Camera
- Video Recorder
- Music Player
- Gaming platform
- Internet Browsing
Future Application to develop in the next few years will include:
- Video Chatting
- Motion Sensing Control
- Remote Control
- Mobile Wallet
- Video Projection
- Wireless Charging
Future applications may eliminate the usage of other daily object we use today. The video chatting application can elimate normal vocal phone calls to advance phone call where you can see who your talking to. The mobile wallet can eliminate the usage of credit cards and may also decrease the number of card theft. Cell phone are on there way to become the device we live by and the device that controls everything in our daily lives. Motion sensing control, also known as "the magic wand", eliminates touching your phone for certain commands. A remote control demand will be able to allow your phone to control other electronics such as your tv or sterio.
Eventually we will all need to develop the skills it takes to work a cell phone from basic applications to more advance ones, depending if it is for personal use or business use. As the mobile phone is becoming the device of the 21st century the skills needed to obtain to use one can keep people with the times. Sometimes just sitting down and experimenting with your phone can help you learn more about how to use the applications. For those who are technology illiterate there are book that have guides to how to work all kinds of phones. To learn more about your personal phone device you may also go to your mobile provider's website and there you can look a specific device to learn more about it under suppot links. To gain the skills you need to use your cell phone can be easily done by anyone of all ages.
Computer Skills
Computer literacy has become an essential skill. People need to know how to use computers for work, school, and daily life. Here are the basic skills we all need:
- Understanding the hardware. We don't all have to be experts on hardware, but we have to know how to hook up the machine and turn it on.
- Using input devices. We all have to be good with the keyboard and mouse.
- Using basic computer programs. We all need to be able to use word processing programs, spreadsheets, and simple publishing programs. Since different jobs require different programs and they change all the time, the most important thing is to be able to learn to use new programs.
- Using the internet. Since we use the internet for research, communication, work, and play, we all need to be able to navigate and search well. We also have to know basic safety rules for the internet.
Computers are a central part of life in the 20th century. They have to be part of our education. They should also be available to everyone, including people who can't afford to have a computer at home. So public computers at schools and libraries are a must.
Robotics
Josh Wheeler
Robotics are becoming a greater part of our lives, we are becoming more dependant on them in the military and police forces. Robots are starting to help surgeons save lives and have also come into our homes to help us with daily household chores. Many companies and organizations are investing in robotic technology currently sponsoring 121 robotics competitions this year. These competitions are designed to enhance the current technology devoted to robots. It has been stated that at the rate of current technological advancement a computers capabilities double every two years. This fast moving pace necessitates an ability to change and interface with these ever advancing machines.Robotics Competitions
In 2001 Congress mandated that one third of military ground vehicles must be unmanned by 2015. According to the DoD report, "Unmanned Systems Roadmap 2007-2032," the Pentagon plans to spend $4 billion by 2010 on unmanned systems technology, with an eye toward increasing autonomy to free up troops that would otherwise have to monitor the robots closely.
Military robotics link 1
Companies such as Boeing continue to innovate autonomous robots at their own expense, knowing the cababilities that can come from these machines. The Phantom Ray a fully autonomous UAV, or unmanned flying vehicle, can stay aloft for 30 hours allowing better defense of our country. "Should the military want to buy combat UAV's like the Phantom Ray from Boeing, the price tag would be about $60 million to $70 million a piece in current dollars," says Davis, current Boeing CEO, adding that this figure would become "dramatically less expensive" as production expands.Sound pricey? Consider that an F-22 strike fighter costs about $143 million apiece.
Military robotics link 2
Today's surgeons are required to perform many difficult procedures. Using new robot technology allows these professionals to help us in ways that would not have been attempted in the past. Unfortunately, many surgeons face obstacles like obstructed access and a lack of depth perception when it comes to performing intricate operations. UAMS offers patients an alternative to conventional open surgical procedures with the da Vinci U2122 Robotic Surgery System. Our caring and compassionate doctors are now using the da Vinci Surgical System for a growing number of procedures and treatment areas. These machines allow smaller incisions in the body reducing surgical time, risk of infection, and faster recovery.
Medical robotics
Robots are even coming into our homes to help our with chores. The Roomba is an autonomous robot that can vacuum and mop floors. The owner of iRobot, maker of the roomba, envisions a future of many robots completing daily household tasks allowing more of our burdened schedules to be devoted to other priorities. Robotic technology has quickly advanced past the point of no return. Robots are here to stay and our ability to interact with these machines must advance with their technology.

Horticulture
Chris Senteney
Horticulture is an essential aspect of the twenty-first century because all life depends on plants, either directly or indirectly. The word horticulture is from the Latin and it comes from the words "hortus" which means garden and "culturea" meaning cultivation. Humans depend on plants for oxygen, food, textiles, and medicines.
The basic thing needed for life is oxygen, which is produced in a process that only takes place in plants, know as photosynthesis. Food is also crucial to sustain life; that area of horticulture is known as "Agriculture." Agriculturalists specialize in the growing of fruits and vegetables, which we eat everyday. Agronomy is a term that is used to describe the area of grains, which also is used in making food, and fiber crops used to make textiles. Forestry, which is the science of growing trees, is a necessary division because it gives the timber that we use for building, paper, and also materials used for textiles.
Ethnobotany is the study of using plants in medicine, for instance the cancer drug Taxol, which is used when people are going through chemotherapy, is derived from a chemical that is only produced in the Pacific Yew Tree. Whereas Floriculture is not crucial to life, it does make it more enjoyable. Floriculturalists are the people that focus on ornamental plants and flowers that we use to beatify landscapes.
Whereas horticulture does deal with the study of plants, it also affects the economy. Many countries rely on the exports of the products that we produce from plant material: Spain is the leading producer of fruits and vegetables which is responsible for over $107 million in their economy. China's textile industry brings in $63.5 billion and is responsible for 18% of the worlds' textile industry. The leading flower exporter is Columbia and it brings in over $568 million into their economy.
So as you can see, horticulture is not only vital for our health, but it is essential to the economies of the world.
Alternative Energy
Jordan Danielle
In this day and age we can no longer rely on the fossil fuels that have been supplying our nation's energy for so long. In the 21st Century there will be a need for people who are educated in alternative energies, in their uses, and in how to help everyday people change their homes over to "Green" methods. Hopefully these people can help take away our dependence on fossil fuels.Types of Alternative Energy:
Wind Energy harnesses the power of the wind to propel the blades which is then turned into electricity for human consumption.
Pros:
- Obtaining the wind energy produces no pollution
- Wind energy is also renewable
- Farming and grazing can still take place around the bottom of the wind turbines
- Wind farms can be built off-shore
Cons:
- Constant wind is needed for continuous power generation
- Large wind farms has a negative effect on the scenery
Solar Energy is the sun's ray (solar radiation) that reaches the earth. It can be collected by solar panels and converted into energy.
Pros:
- Renewable energy source
- Solar power generation produces no air or water pollution
- Solar energy can be used for practical uses such as heating and lighting
Cons:
- Does not produce any energy if the sun is not shining
- Solar Energy stations can be very expensive to build
Geothermal Energy harnesses the heat energy present underneath the Earth.
Pros:
- Does not produce any negative by-products
- Once a geothermal plant is built it is quickly self-sufficient energy wise
- They are small and normally have no negative effect on the landscape
Cons:
- If installed incorrectly, these plants can produce harmful pollutants
- Geothermal sites are prone to running out of steam.
Hydroelectric Energy
Pros:
- Sustainable
- Non-polluting
- Low energy cost after initial set up
Cons:
- Change to natural water-flow
- Degrades water quality
- Blocks seasonal fish migration
- Ecosystem Damage
Skills Needed to Use these possible energy sources
- Education
- The UK states that it will need in the future people who have a degree of higher education in engineers and scientist who can help reduce the company's dependency on fossil fuels. So with this is mind it is easy to see that we will need people that are educated in this demanding field to teach and lead the way to dependence
- There will be a demand for people who know how to properly install these machines that collect the energy.
- We will also have a demand in jobs to maintain these machines
- We will need people who are educated in energy, or even electricity, so that we will not make big mistakes in obtaining the energy or even transporting the energy
- In order to work in this field you should flexible as far as relocation is concerned because your knowledge might be needed anywhere.
- There will also be a need for people to teach the public how to use this energy
- Currently there is a high demand for people to build upon their current education level to meet the green needs

Green Living
Maranda Foster
Have you ever thought about how green living could affect our health and our environment? The usage of fossil fuels emits "greenhouse gasses" into the air, most commonly carbon dioxide and methane. Carbon dioxide is a heavy gas which acts as a blanket trapping in heat and causing global warming, and in turn raising our average temperature. Sure, a nice sunny 70 degree day in January might sound appealing, but that would also mean hotter summers.Global warming affects everyone. People who count on livestock and farming for their livelihood would be affected when the increase in heat diminishes the water supply. Those who enjoy hunting, fishing, boating, and skiing would also be affected by decreased water supply. Heat waves could increase the risk of heat related illnesses such as heat rash, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
Mark Twain once said "Everybody comments on the weather, but nobody ever does anything about it." Will we make it out of the 21st century without the valuable skill of green living? The following is a list of easy skills to develop to help reduce your carbon footprint.
- Cut down use of fossil fuels by readjusting your thermostat or driving less.
- Buy organic produce to discourage the use of harmful chemicals.
- Use cleaning products that are safe for the environment.
- Change your iridescent light bulbs into energy saving florescent bulbs.
- Learning how to make a compost is another valuable skill, you can use fertilizer from the compost for your garden or landscaping.
Methane is a more powerful green house gas than Carbon Dioxide, meaning that its global warming potential (GWP) is over twenty times higher. Whereas Carbon Dioxide comes from burning fossil fuels, Methane comes from landfills, animal waste, natural gas released into the atmosphere, and decaying plants. Decaying plants trapped in the northern permafrost is what worries scientist most. Global Warming Examiner, John Ryden says, "These are plants ... frozen in northern permafrost that [have] trapped tremendous quantities of methane gas for millions of years. That permafrost is melting due to global warming and scientists are concerned that the methane gas will be released into the atmosphere. [Thus creating] a feedback loop where the released methane further [rises] temperatures, which then releases even more methane."
- Eating less meat can help; 85% of Methane gas in our atmosphere is produced by livestock.
- Reduce waste by using your leftover meat for other meals.
- Methane could also be used as a renewable resource; sewage treatment plants capture then burn Methane on-site to generate electricity and heat to power their operations
"Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little."

The World is Flat: a Brief History of the Twenty-First Century
"The World is Flat" is a book, and also a metaphor that describes how economic globalization has caused the economic playing field to even. The world has been flattened by ten so called "flatteners" The collapse of the Berlin wall, Netscape, workflow software, uploading, outsourcing, offshoring, supply chaining, insourcing, informing, and "The steroids". The book describes how jobs that would have been for Americans, have now been moved all over the world thanks to the internet. It also states that if we are to thrive and remain employable with our high wages in this globalized economy we must become more diverse, skilled, and adaptable workers.
Kent Woodard
Strategy for Sustainability: A Business Manifesto
"Strategy for Sustainability" is a informational text explaining the best way to sustain a thriving business. In today's societies being able to run a business successfully is important because those who own the business do not wish to waste to much money to keep the business going and also want to bring in money. People also want to go green to save money. In the book it explains how you have to have balance in the work place and how people can go green to an extent but not all the way, because it would cost so much money that the owners of the business would lose money. It also mentions how it is great to have leadership and workers in the workplace that can work together. it pulls together leadership, communication, going green, and the best ways to pull all these ideals together to create a more successful atmosphere. Civic Literacy in the 21st Century
Jessica Farrar
What is Civic Literacy and why is it more important in the 21st Century than in previous centuries? Civic Literacy is knowing how to stay involved in civic life on all levels (local, state, national, global) and understanding how the government works. Civic Literacy is more important now than ever because so many people have lost interest in the boring part of politics, that it basically lets the government control. There has been a steady decline over the communities engagements and participation in politics. Civic Literacy is so important because if no one will stand up and tell the government what they want and require changes, they won't do anything for the people or their communities.Everyone has the ability to participate in local government, many just don't know where to start. One way everyone can help his or her community is to vote! According to the Federal Election Commission, just over half of the voting age population turned out to vote at the 2000 presidential elections. That number only grew to about 57 percent in 2008. Getting registered to vote and voting is an important way that you can be involved in your community.
Another way you can get involved in this ever changing technological century is to get involved in an online community. According to a USC Annenberg School, who released a study on the impact of Internet on American Society, the internet is becoming a major part of how we participate in our civic life. As writen by Andy Carven, an internet activist and author, on a blog on pbs.org on the study, "Just over one-fifth of online community members - 20.3 percent - take action offline for a cause related to their online communities at least once a year. Nearly 65 percent of online community members say they now engage in civic causes that were new to them when they started going online, while an additional 43.7 percent say they participate in social activism more since they've joined their online communities."

Yes! 21st Century Solutions for Taking Control of Your Money Now! John L. Macko (Author), Jane E. Chidester (Author)
Tina Castleman
In these unsure times, everyone needs to work out a budget. Most people live paycheck to paycheck if they have no budgeting skills. This way of life leaves no extra money for unexpected expenses or saving for the future. Budgeting is a very important skill needed in the 21st century skill for planning on the future and also because of the unsure economic times.Budgeting is the first step to financial independence. Users of this easy to manage system will be rewarded with more control of their money and more money in their pockets!" -- Randy Gardner, LLM, CPA, co-author, 101 Tax Saving Ideas
"The concepts introduced in BudgetYes! can be used by anyone from student to executive to retiree. It shows how you can take control of your money, rather than a budget controlling you." -- Diane C. Auckland, CPA, James A. Brickweg CPAs
"Though usually overlooked, setting up a good personal budget is the first step to any money management activity. Without it, you cannot control your finances and will always fall short of your goals." -- Mark J. Randall, CFP, American Express Financial Advisors, Inc.
This book about budgeting works well for everyone. It helps young single people learn how to make a budget and stick to it to prepare for the future. It also helps families learn the importance of putting money aside to invest in the future and have "emergency" money.
This book starts from the bottom line and teaches the different ways to consider the necessities from unnecessary items. The reader is taught how to differentiate between needs and wants, and how to budget for them. The budgeter is taught how to create a budget for their personal financial situation.
Job Readiness
job skills for the 21st century, by April Lee
There are four basic groups of skills that are a foundation on which to build a successful career. They are:BASIC SKILLS
- reading
- writing
- mathematics
- effective communication (speaking and listening)
THINKING SKILLS
- creative thinking: imaginitive, innovative ideas, etc.
- problem solving
- decision making: identify goals, quick decision maker, etc.
- visualization: ability to read blueprints, sketches, etc.
PEOPLE SKILLS
- able to negotiate
- leadership qualities
- work in a team
- cultural diversity IS CULTURAL DIVERSITY A SKILL?
BEHAVIORAL SKILLS
- flexability/ adaptability
- initiative/ self direction
- time management
- reliability/ accountability
- goal oriented / motivation
- self confidence
- integrity/ honesty/ morality
Of these four groups, 21st century employers say that behavioral skills are most important in prospective employees. As education and technical skills increase, many of the behavior skills and personal responsibility have seemingly decreased.
That's a very intriguing sentence you've ended with -- I want to know more about that. Can you give a link?
"You'd think people would know to call in sick when they're not coming to work, but that's not always the case," said Michael Kauffman, an executive at Anoplate Corp., a 175-person metal manufacturer in Syracuse, an excerpt taken from an article titled 69% Job Seekers Lack Basic Employability Skills, by Leon Lazaroff of the Chicago Tribune.
[While the AFL-CIO and National Association of Manufacturers have clashed over wage issues and foreign trade, Paul Cole, secretary-treasurer of the New York State AFL-CIO says the two groups agree that a more efficient and higher-skilled workforce can ensure that well-paying jobs are not exported.
"If we infuse education and job-training with an emphasis on `employability skills,' then we develop workers who not only can get jobs, they can keep them as well," he said.]
Who will have secure work in the 21st century?
Sheila Hunt
Many current jobs will be replaceable by higher technology in the 21st Century. Rapid knowledge growth means that it is really difficult for people to keep on top of what they need to know: therefore, people need to specialize. With the rate of technological change so rapid, it is difficult for anyone to predict what jobs will remain and what new jobs will emerge. Workers need to develop higher levels of skills. Highly skilled jobs will be in big demand.Thomas Friedman, columnist for the New York Times and Pulitzer prize winning author, wrote a book called The World is Flat.
Friedman believes that only four kinds of people will have jobs that will remain in demand in the 21st Century. He calls these people "untouchable". Untouchables come in four broad categories: Workers who are "special," workers who are "specialized", workers who are"anchored",and workers who are" flexible."
Here are the four categories.
- Workers who are special:
People like Michael Jordan, Bill Gates and Madonna. They have a global market for their jobs. Their jobs can never be outsourced.
- Workers who are specialized:
from specialized lawyers, accountants, and brain surgeons. These are skills that are always in high demand.
- Workers who are anchored:
These jobs apply to most Americans. Everyone from a hairstylist to the waitress at dinner. Chefs, plumbers, nurses, and cleaning ladies. They are anchored because they must be done from a specific location, involving face to face contact with a customer, client or patient. These jobs generally cannot be digitized.
- Workers who are flexible:
people who are always developing new skills to keep up with change and demand.
Friedman addresses a concern shared by many Americans: what do we tell our kids? As the competition for jobs stiffens, how do we prepare them for the that? His suggestion is that we make ourselves "untouchables."
In the 20th Century, you could be mediocre in your job and still earn a decent living. In the 21st Century you really don't want to be just mediocre. Jobs are going to the best, smartest, most productive worker.
In conclusion, we simply cannot do things the same old way anymore. People must be willing to change, adapt, and most importantly, further their education.
Critical Thinking
Qiuqing Lin
Critical thinking is incorporated in all types of thinking modes. People use critical thinking scientifically, mathematically, historically, economically, morally, and philosophically. Therefore, critical thinking is a valuable skill in our daily lives. However, this does not mean that we all use it one hundred percent of the time. We are people and have made undisciplined and irrational decisions and thinking. So, to be able to become a critical thinker, it takes motivation and discipline. The person needs to enough experiences and reasoning to be able to successfully think critically. He or she must have the ability to process all the information provided to him/her and have intellectual commitment to use this information to solve problems. Critical thinking requires one to practice the skill and obtain more information to improve his or her skills.
The main importance of critical thinking is to be able to improve one's quality of thinking no matter what subject or problem is given to them. A person who is a critical thinker will ask essential questions and formulate possible solutions. The critical thinker can gather important information, interpret it, and communicate it effectively to others.

21st Century Skills in Schools
David Jones
What do students need to survive in the 21st Century workforce? For most schools the compensation for the changing world is broken into 3 categories: Social, Thinking, and Digital skills.Overall students of the 21st century......
--have self-direction and productivity when working alone and with a group
--should leave school and play an effective role in society.
--need to have the ability to effectively finish a task that is relevant to their goal.
--should be able to communicate in the workforce efficiently with technology.
Many schools have made a partnership to help aid their students for higher education or be effective in society. Partners include The Partnership for 21st Century Skills, project 21c, Matiri Group and others.
Most of the steps schools have taken have to do with technology. Web 2.0 is a popular example of this and has popular tools like social-networking, video-sharing, wikis and blogs. Web 2.0 can also be adapted into a classroom or library setting (Classroom 2.0 and Library 2.00.)

Postsecondary Training
Bryan West
In the 21st century jobs will not only require skills, but also postsecondary training and degrees. You may have the necessary skills to compete in the job market, but not meet the job requirements of having a degree. A degree can show potential employers that you can commit to and complete a multiyear project. It will also show that you have the necessary skills of multitasking, critical thinking, and problem solving. Each year the Department of Labor releases projected job growth for the nation. In that report they look into their crystal ball and predict the thirty top job growth areas. With the release of their 2006-2016 report, they anticipate just over 86% of job seekers will require postsecondary training. According to Florida State University, "Nationally, it has become increasingly evident that workforce needs of the 21st century will depend on education beyond the bachelors' degree."
Even the President of the United States has weighed in on the subject. President George W. Bush and President Obama have sounded the alarm for Americans to improve the country's standing in the world by seeking higher education. In a recent speech on the growing needs of the 21st century, President Obama said, "Never has a college degree been more important."
At this point I want to address non-traditional students. That is people that are thinking about going to college that finished high school five years ago or more. Now in order to pursue a degree, you must have some basic knowledge in order to be successful. Let's take a look at three areas and where you can find help online. First is Time Management . You must be able to juggle daily life and classes. Second is Student Aid . You must have the necessary funds to attend school and still be able to provide for you and/or your family. Finally you must be prepared for the academic challenges that are in front of you. Now don't be offended by this site, it has been a huge help to returning students, including me. Help for Everything

Imagine all Americans at their ideal weight. A couscious guide to eating with 75 recipes will assist. The overproduction and marketing drive excessive consumption of meat and dairy in the USA. If Americans would cut down on their consumption meat and dairy this could slow down or even stop global warming. The Everything Organic Cooking for Baby and Toddler Book: 300 naturally delicious recipes to get your child off to a healthy start (Everything Series)
This is a very important book I feel for the 21st century skills series. We as humans are eating way to many preservatives and pesticides on our foods. I think to learn how to cook for your baby and toddler in an organic manner could be one of the best things we could do for our families. When these authors talk about organic they are talking about getting food that is organically grown and does not have pesticides and herbicides on them for keeping diseases and bugs off of the product that is grown. Buying organic can be a little more expensive but they believe as well as I that in the long run the next generation can benefit from learning how to make our childrens foods from organically grown products. There are some very interesting recipes in this cookbook as well such as mango puree, baked pita chips instead of potato chips for our children. Also I believe that if you start your children out feeding them things that are or ganic they will be better adjusted to trying many and better things that are good for their bodies, instead of the high fatty foods that they get used to now that are packed with preservatives and all kinds of pesticides. This is a very interesting and useful book for mothers and fathers as well to invest in and think of the benefits that your children will gain from the knowledge you gain from the information and recipes in this very useful cookbook for the 21st century. -- Carla Gregory

Fundamentals of Nursing
Theory, Concepts & Applications
Theories on learning have shown that students learn better if they can see how the content will be useful to them. They understand better when presented with something concrete in addition to tackling the abstract definitions and theory. Volume 1 emphasizes the relationship between theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge to encourage each of your students to think like a nurse. This approach allows you to emphasize either theory or practice as it suits you and your students. Each chapter starts with Learning Outcomes - a checklist of what your students should know once they've completed the chapter. Meet Your Patient, also at the opening of each chapter, introduces your students to the patient they will follow and whose experiences illustrate the principles presented throughout the chapter, thus capturing their interest with real-life scenarios. Chapters are divided into two sections. Theoretical Knowledge - Knowing Why and Practical Knowledge - Knowing How reflect how information is communicated in real life and enable your students to focus on just the "why" or the "how." This is where the text's conversational tone is truly evident - the authors sound as if they are talking to your students rather than lecturing them. Headings (often phrased as questions that highlight students' concerns about the information), bulleted lists, boxes, and figures break up the text and make it more visually engaging. Care Plans are diagramed for visual learning as Care Maps. Links That Help Your Students Think Like Nurses The didactic material that you'll cover in your classroom is contained in Volume 1: Theory, Concepts and Applications. The content of this volume is systematically linked to Volume 2: Thinking and Doing in which the critical thinking introduced in Volume 1 continues to be applied, this time to a single unifying case study, to chapter content, and to the clinical procedures that are the core of Volume 2. The Global Achievement Gap looks at how schools could be reformed while looking at what students need to survive in the 21st century. Wagner looks at what resources students need to connect with an employer today. He discovers that this can be broken into three categories: thinking skills, creativity, and communication. Because of the teaching, principal and other education expirence, Wagner was able to realize that schools are not teaching the skills that matter most to today's students

The Greatest Salesman in the World: Gift Edition

"The Greatest Salesman in the World" is a self-help classic from best-selling author Og Mandino.
This book has a very motivating story that encourages you to become a successful person. It is not a manual to become the top salesman; it is about empowering yourself to be more successful, to be persistent, to be committed, and to have faith in what you do. This book is important for the 21st Century because it contains some basic human principles, that if applied to your daily life can help you achieve your goals and become a better person, and to have a more positive outlook on life, work and relationships. This book is written in a parabolic style, it very easy to read. It tells a story of a young man named Hafid and his journey from being a humble camel boy to the titular greatest salesman in the world. The main highlights of this book are the "The Ten Scrolls of Success" These contain enduring principles on how to improve your life, how to set goals, and overcome obstacles. What it is fascinating to me is that these priceless scrolls were not passed on to rich or well known men, but were guarded and passed on to humble people who cared, loved, and had compassion for others, like Hafid.
"Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough"
"I will persist until I succeed"
I will try, and try, and try again. Each obstacle I will consider as a mere detour to my goal and a challenge to my profession.

One Small Step Can Change Your Life: The Kaizen Way
In the 21st century life is very busy and people sometimes work long hours and have hetic schedules. When change needs to be made in business or personal life it can seem overwhelming. Kaizen is a way to make these changes.
In the business world when change is needed they usually turn to the process of change through innovation which by definition is defined as a drastic process of change. But, in our personal lives making a drastic change may not be the answer for lasting change and progress. The art of Kaizen is simply making small steps of continual improvement. This practice can help people affect postive change in their lives for physical health and attainment of goals.
This book was written by Robert Maurer, Ph.D. Dr. Maurer uses Kaizen in his practice to help patients feeling too overwhelmed to make positive changes. He also uses this in his consulting firm for corporations, hospital staffs, universities, and other organizations.
The history of this art is given and how it was applied in Japan after World War II to rebuild the economy after its devastation.
The steps for practicing Kaizen are laid out in a simple plan and are easy to understand with stories of people who have successfully applied them in their own lives.
One of the techniques used in the practice of Kaizen is to ask small questions. Maurer says"Small questions create a mental environment that welcomes unabashed creativity and playfulness. When you ask small question of others, you can channel that creative force toward team goals. By asking small questions of yourself, you lay the groundwork for a personalized kaizen program for change."(35).
"What shapes our lives are the questions we ask, refuse to ask, or never think to ask." Sam Keen
It is these small questions that are used in businesses which practice kaizen. In Hal Varien's article "Kaizen, That Continuous Improvement Strategy, Finds Its Ideal Environment" he confirms:
"Kaizen doesn't just mean a business should keep trying new things. Rather, it refers to a disciplined process of systematic exploration, controlled experimentation and then painstaking adoption of the new procedures."
Whether for business or one's personal life the art of kaizen could be of great benefit and this book could help understand and start the practice in either one of these areas.

Jazz Math
Coincidences, Chaos, and All That Math Jazz: Making Light of Weighty Ideas
WOW MATH!
Math is in everything we do in life no matter what! In this book you will learn many different mathematical ideas and concepts. A simple example is buying a pack of gum. You have the price of the pack of gum plus tax. You give the clerk a dollar to pay for the .75 cent pack of gum, and you receive .25 cents back. Then there are complex mathematical equations to figure out the trajectory of a rain drop by its splash pattern on the ground.
Mother Nature is made up of complex math also. For instance a DNA strand is made up of simple but yet complex codes that define how we are made.
This book is full of wonderful yet complex ideas that math is in everything we touch, see, and smell in our lives. This not a book you would read as a bed time story unless you are reading it to Einstein, but if you are a math nerd then you are in for a real treat.

Writing is still important
By Adam Brown
A Guide to the Norton Reader, Eleventh Edition
This book gives you the greatest detail of how to write correctly, including stories that show mistakes as well as demonstrating what a good paper is. There are other writing books out there but you will find them blown away by this book. It is clearly the best choice for teaching, or just reading up on writing in my opinion. The book has several assignments that are not that difficult but make you think, so you still get something out of the assignment. This book is a great book for those who are passionate about writing or to understand if you have trouble writing and need to understand for an upcoming promotion or job.

Interpreting the Gift Still Affecting us in the 21st Century.
and she loved a little boy."
Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older, he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave.
______________________________________________________________
Going green today has awoken more people than ever. As we have made our way into the 21st century we have begun to see the everlasting impressions that we have put upon our world. We know more than ever that a change is in need and respect is over due. The world has given us everything to strive further in everything we have accomplished in order to survive to the fullest. Now it's our moment to stand up and return the favor. For over 40 years this classic book has revealed a conflict that can be concluded with many different metaphors. Shel Silverstein has captured a universal audience of all ages. He has not only recognized a situation but described it beautifully and to the point in his illustrations. One that can be described involves man verses mothernature. It is a very simple, but sad reminder of unconditional love. The story starts with the relationship between a tree and the innocence of a growing boy. It unfolds the needs and wants of the human race that is put upon nature and shows the sadness as we neglect to appriciate it's unconditional sharing of love. As the boy grows into a man many years later and has used the tree for everything it has had to offer he realizes that he has taken what is most important for granted without knowing it until it is almost too late to correct. This is a great story to help share the love mothernature has helped provide for us and what we can do in return.

War in Iraq
Book Review by Alan Marcus
Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2003 to 2005
The book explains that the planning of the Iraq war was poorly executed by both the Bush administration as well as the U.S. Army. Ricks then goes on to outline the infighting between the senior policy advisers such as Colin Powell, Paul Wolfowitz,Donald Rumsfeld and the Army. Ricks includes quotes from former generals of the Iraq war, former Army generals, and several top level officials, both working for the Bush administration and Douglas Feith's planning contingent.
Moving into the war, Ricks states the various problems of the Army's combat tactics as well as criticizing the overall strategy. Ricks also heavily criticizes the actions of L. Paul Bremer and explores his impact as head of the Coalition Provisional Authority. This is a book of stong opinion from Ricks, but He also spent two tours in Iraq to help him put this book together.
Fiasco is a great book for anyone who wants to learn more about the war in Iraq or for the ones who who think they know but want the cold hard facts.

Listening for Success by Steve Shapiro
By: Kara Jackson
Listening for Success by author Steve Shapiro is an insightful book for success in the business world and in life period. Shapiro feels that "listening is a path to enlightenment." And that "people are unable to learn if they are talking and not listening." He also states that people who care, listen and people who listen, care.
Shapiro has two methods for learning to listen better, a simple method and a multi-level listening method. The simple method is to ask then listen. The multi-level listening is to pay attention, acknowledge what is being said, clarify what is being said, and respond to the situation.
I agree with the author that listening is very important and that most do not have this skill. Many people like to talk and don't really listen to what is being said. Often people need to tell their story without being interrupted or told what to do. I think that the two methods for learning to listen are simple and to the point. People would all be more successful in the 21st century if they learn to listen.
Multilingualism an Important 21st Century Skill
Christian Cortes
You don't have to speak the language fluently. It does help to be able to speak fluently, but don't get discourage there are different levels. Just know a few phrases can help with your job. A scenario your in a board room and a big client is about to come in, and he is from Mexico. If you were to say something to him in Spanish you might make him feel comftarble. This would probably make the client feel better about the deal. According to recruitment agencies being able to speak other languages can help you earn from 8 to 20 percent more in your job(Luddy,2008). Knowing another language depends on where you live. If you live in Los Angeles for example and your able to speak English and Spanish. It would probably be very handy, but if you live in in Arkansas and you speak French even thought it is a nice language. It will not be as handy as knowing Spanish.
Being Multilingual is an advantage not only in the workplace, but in life also. Someone who is multilingual is more open to other cultures. He or she would feel more comfortable around a new culture. Now at days most of the big corporation like Wal-Mart are worldwide. These type of companies are looking to hire people who are able to speak other languages. Especially if the job requires for the person to travel to other countries. There are translator, but being able to speak in your clients language is a better way of communication.

Why sustaining a small business in the long run is a bad idea with the current resession
by Devin Thibodeaux
The small business that are breaking even are going to have an even harder time in the future because The large corporations that allow large businesses like Wal-Mart and Target sell their items are more willing to lower their prices for the large business than they are for the small businesses. The small businesses will have to leave the prices of their items that they are selling remain the same and Large businesses will lower their prices. The ability to lower the prices from large businesses creating contracts that large corporations are willing to allow since it is a large business it can in theory be trusted more.
While Breaking even now sounds fine, it will get worse. While the big corporations are allowing large business sell their items for less, the price to make the items is rising. This means that prices are going to rise also. Thus now, the marginal cost of running the business is also rising because the nature of people to look for the chaeper option will take them to the large business where the same thing is being sold for less. This decreases the marginal benefit that the small business is making and indcreasing the marginal cost. Gradually, the marginal cost will be more than the marginal benefit at the going rate and the small business to try and keep going will lay some people off in hope of saving money. When the small business lays people off the people they lay off will begin to go to the large business to save money. This will decrease the small businesses profit even more and push the already breaking even small business the economic spectrum of loosing money instead of making it.
With the small business not making money they could keep going but they would have to take a loan out of a bank and hope to make more money. However, with the recession banks are unlikely to give money to a struggling business. the amount of people going to the struggling business will decrease because the business owner will have fired most of the employees to save money and the employees will be going to the large business to save money. With out the income the banks will see the small business as a hinderance and not give them money on accounts of them being unreliable.
Thus, it is not a good idea to sustaing a struggling small business that is hardly breaking even with todays economic resession. the Small business will not be able to flourish and it would dampen a persons hope of owning it.
Nursing: RN versus LPN, the decision is yours.
by Geneva Holt
Imagine the 21st century without medical professionals. Nurses are an important part of the medical field. Which profession is more useful Registered Nurses (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN)? What are their skills? How are the two professions different? This information from www.healthmad.com/nursing/lpn LPN versus RN: Different paths to nursing and www.ehow.com/facts What is the difference between LPN and RN explain the answers. The LPN studies Nursing Arts and Science with a background in other science and humanity. Their function is a dependent role that requires a supervision or assistance from RN or other medical professionals. The primary focus provides direct patient care, including the determination of patient status and the evaluation outcomes. Career paths include nursing homes and other long-term care environments. Some responsibilities are taking blood pressure, pulse and temperature, shots, change dressings, clean and bandage wounds, administer medication and monitor patient condition. The LPN has one year of education and their certification includes a diploma or certificate and a national licensing examination.
The RN gains a broader and deeper understanding of necessary topics and a more specialized knowledge including physiology, pharmacology, clinical practice, delivery systems, research utilization, resource management and team functioning. Career paths include hospitals and medical offices, with a greater potential for advancement and wages. RN responsibilities include taking temperature and giving shots, developing patient care plan as well as managing and assigning task to the LPN and Nurse Assistant. RN education includes either a two year Associate degree or a four year Bachelor of Science degree and a national licensing examination.
The decision is yours. Based on length of time you have for education, a look at potential wages, and the consideration of the stress level, your decision can be made. A greater mastery of the relevant information and detail is the basic difference.

How Social Media is Changing the Way We Communicate
By Stacy Roth
Social media is changing the face of human communication through technology. Some people these days believe we have become either too busy or simply too lazy to write letters or chat in person like people were forced to in the past. With today's methods of communicating it is simply not necessary to communicate in any other way. The new methods have become way too convenient. We can do so much with social media technologies now such as reconnecting with friends and family, report on the weather, traffic, and interesting things in their lives, gather data, market and advertize your company, or share pictures and videos with your friends worldwide. We have become so habituated with doing everything on the Internet, like checking the news and updates on Facebook and Twitter, that it just seemed natural to add more possibilities to make it even more convenient. I agree with Soren Gordhamer when he wrote, "After all, you didn't choose the editors at newspapers and other publications, but you did choose the people and groups that you follow on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media."
Companies have even started using it as a tool for marketing and advertizing. For example, on Twitter you can "retweet" (RT) their post to win prizes or help get the word out about a certain special they may be running. They also use it as a means of gathering data for research. On Twitter, you can search for a certain word or phrase and it will pull up any "tweets" that contain the information you are searching for. With that information you can do many things, like data visualization. Jer Thorp researched the phrase " Good Morning", on Twitter and displayed the results on a 3D map. He color coded it from different times people had posted their tweet with red being more on the east coast time zone and green being more on the west coast, the more current time according to his location. Here is that link, Datavisualization.
It is now so easy to connect with friends and family using Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, LinkedIn, Skype, Friendster, Google Wave, Loopt, Friend Feed, Flickr, Photobucket, Picasa, Bebo, BigTent, Orkut, Skyrock, Pandora, Netflix, FmyLife, Google Talk, AIM, and MSN Messenger. These sites offer anything from an update of 140 characters, to posting pictures, videos, links, maps, and live chat to people all around the world. It should be fascinating to see what the future and its updated technology will mean for this important and forward thinking process of communicating.
Over-All Computer Skills in the 21st Century
Josh Printz
Being able to use a computer at a professional level is very useful in careers today. People who work on computers for their jobs have many things they must know how to use. They have to know how to use spreadsheets. A spreadsheet is a program used to display financial information. They also have to know how to use word processing programs to communicate with other employees and businesses. The internet is also a big thing they have to know how to use proficiently. Maybe the most important quality in a job situation is being able to learn how to use new programs quickly. Clearly, the lack of computer skills may be a contributing factor if you are turned down for a job.
Schools also now require students to be able to use computers at a very basic level. They must be able to use word programs for papers they have to write. They must be able to use the internet well enough to check their e-mail for assignments, and to do research. They also have computer classes that a student can take to help them be able to use computers better, and to help them prepare for writing letters for a professional career.
Computers are now a big part of home life in the 21st century. People have to know at least how to set up and turn on the computer, or else they have to pay someone to hook it up for them. Again, the internet plays a big role at home as well. At home the internet is used mostly for communicating with others through e-mail or chat sites. Also computers at home are a main source of entertainment in the 21st century. With all the games, music, blog sites you are sure to be entertained for hours. Being able to use a computer has become much more important in the 21st century than anyone could have predicted.

Benefits of being Bilingual in the 21st Century
Lindsey Lampton
Individuals that are bilingual tend to show a higher performance on test or exams which is definately a curriculum benefit. Not only that, but studies have shown that blinguals find it easier to learn and speak 3 or 4 more languages. Bilinguals are able to switch between two different languages which open their minds and creates a powerful link in different people from other countries. The benefit of bilingualism in the employment area is it offeres a wider choice of jobs which can lead to very successful career oppurtunities in various fields. A few examples of these careers are retail sector, transport, tourism, administration, secretarial work, public relations, and teaching as well as many others. On the cognitive level, bilinguals are more sensitive to the needs of listeners and monolingual people. Learning and speaking another language has a positive effect on intellectual growth and enhances mental development.
Overall, the benefits of being bilingual are endless and can present wonderful oppurtunities to someone. I think it should be required to teach other languages to children from the time they start school to the time they Graduate. The same as Math, Engllsh, or Science because the earlier one is introduced to another language the better. If it is this beneficial in the 21st century, imagine what the future will offer to those who are bilingual.

Why are Survival Skills Important in The 21st Century
By Oscar Ugalde
Survival skills are very important in the 21st century because other companies will try to over-run you. Not having these skills will put you in the bottom of the industry. In the Industrial Age the main skills you needed to survive and prosper in the business arena were loyalty and strong work ethic. Survival skills are much harder today, because we are working harder and longer with minimum raise. It is hard to find good employees that are dedicated and honest to help out your company. Employees don't often care about your company coasting you money, and employees like that are not suitable for that type of environment.Stress is a big problem with you survival skills because it will interfere with getting your job done. Not only do some have stress in their jobs but also at home, you have to learn how to balance your stress to in order to achieve your goal. Good communication skills are important, to reach out to people to get good clientele and to superb you company. More and more businesses are disappearing because of lack of the survival skills. Knowing them will benefit you by keeping your company up and running successfully.

Dylan electrifies Crowd at 1965 Newport Folk Festival
Performance with electric band draws mixed reaction
Born Robert Zimmerman in 1941 in Hibbing, Minnesota, Dylan's rise to stardom took a distinctly upward trajectory after he changed his name and relocated to New York City in the early nineteen sixties. Already a prolific songwriter and keen social observer, Dylan quickly became the toast of the Greenwich Village(cite) coffeehouse scene. Drawing the attention of folk luminaries such as Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Newport Folk Festival founder Theo Bikel(cite), he was added to the lineup of performers for the 1963 festival. His performance was predictably well received by the audience and further cemented his status as the most salient voice of what had come to be called "protest music." In the ensuing year he continued to write and record music that commented on current social ills such as war and racial inequality, as well as go to Mississippi to sing to and for the people engaged in the effort to register black voters (freedom summer 1964)(cite) . His status in the socially conscientious youth culture continued to grow and by the time the festival rolled around the following year he was unquestionably the that drew the most attention.
Dylan's influence on the youth culture of the day cannot be overstated, but his music was being shaped by social trends as well shaping them. It would be impossible to say with any certainty exactly what sparked the mid-sixties rock and roll renaissance exemplified by the Beatles, et al. and what moved Dylan, at more or less the same time, from the comfortable and lucrative construct of the conventional folk music form in the same general direction. Likely it's a case of parallel development for the most part. But whatever the case, Dylan's music was undergoing marked changes that seemed to be in step with the emerging pop music metamorphosis.
What happened as regards Dylan's performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 is not subject to debate. What happened is this; Dylan was introduced, he sang three songs, "Maggie's Farm", "Like a Rolling Stone", and "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry." In addition to himself on electric guitar, he was accompanied by a band comprised of an electric guitarist, a drummer, a Hammond organist, a harmonica player and an electric bassist. After the three songs were completed Dylan and band left the stage. The sets played by each act that night had been prearranged to be brief in order to accommodate the large number of acts that were booked to play that evening. An exception was made due to the audience's insistence, and Dylan returned alone with an acoustic guitar and played two more songs, "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" and "Mister Tambourine Man", after which, he exited the stage and did not return.
Over the years there has been considerable controversy regarding audience reaction to Dylan's performance. The most prevalent accounts characterize the traditional folkies as being dismayed and up in arms by Dylan performing with a rock and roll band. They saw it as selling out to commercial pop music and abandoning the quest for social justice. It was widely reported that the response to the electric portion of his performance was rife with catcalls and booing, and that only when Dylan returned to the stage with acoustic guitar in hand did they embrace him as their hero of old. Possibly the most oft told and entertaining story of the intensity of the reactions of the old guard is the one in which Pete Seeger accosts the soundman and demands that he turn the sound down and when he's informed Dylan wants it that way he begins to look for an axe to chop the power cable in half. This story has made for interesting press over the years but was finally debunked by Seeger in an interview with Seth Rogovoy in 2001(cite). Seeger describes it this way; "what I said to the soundman was, 'Clean up that sound so we can understand the words' and he shouted back, 'No, this is the way they want it' and I said, 'Goddamn it, if I had an axe, I'd cut the cable." Obviously Seeger had some concerns but they weren't about Dylan's choice of instrumentation, but rather about the audience being able to understand Dylan's all important lyrics.
If one reads the first hand account of Bruce Jackson in The myth of Newport '65: It wasn't Bob Dylan they were booing(cite), a more plausible, albeit less sensational, account of the event emerges. Jackson, who was director of the festival in 1965 recalls that the booing was in response to stage emcee, Peter Yarrow's(cite) announcement that Dylan's set was to be limited to only three songs. According to Jackson, they wanted "more not less of Dylan." He substantiates his claims by supplying a transcript (cite) of a tape in his possession of the performance that was recorded from a direct feed from the control board of the sound system. In Martin Scorcese's documentary, No Direction Home(cite), the footage of Dylan's performance contains considerable booing and catcalls but it isn't clear who or what is being booed. The uncertainty is intentional perhaps, possibly dramatic license on the director's part, it's hard to say. Even the first hand account of Jackson is subject to interpretation.
Whether or not you choose to see the audience's reaction as a rejection of Bob Dylan's nineteen sixty-five foray into new musical territory, one thing is certain, the event signaled a turning point in modern music. It is considered by many to be the birth of the folk rock genre(cite). As for Dylan' personal fortunes; his subsequent fifty year career as a world-class singer/songwriter/performer seems to suggest that time heals most, if not all wounds. Today he continues to tour the world, making relevant social comment and vital music.
Helping keep the Earth green
Sarah Howerton
Many people are unaware of the damage thats occuring to the ozone and our planet. The ozone consists of "good" and "bad". The ozone is made of three oxygen atoms. Ground level ozone consists of oxides of nitrogen and a variety of organic compounds. The ozone at ground level is usually "bad" from all the pollution. Automobiles, factories, and many other chemical substances are the reason for this pollution. The ozone layer that is "good" occurs within 10 to 30 miles above the Earth's surface. The harms of the ozone range from inflammation to chest pains and coughing. There are a range of things you can do to help the ozone.
