My Environment and Why I Need to Save It This Earth Day
People are warned that it may not be safe to eat certain forms of seafood from the waters in the area. We could repair this very quickly starting massive cleanup efforts and by switching to a green economy by embracing renewable energy sources to provide electricity, transportation, jobs, and we could start here in Norfolk.
We have two nuclear power plants in my area and I am not happy. We need to convert to wind and solar power and try to get a handle on nuclear power. We may yet have the ability to use nuclear safely however, now is not the time. Our plants are located north of Hampton Roads in an area known as 'Surry'.
We don't need this in our area until the technology is perfected. As if to prove me right, there has been another accident at the 3-mile island nuclear station in Pennsylvania. Need there be more accidents at our existing plants in order to show they are not viable?
We need stricter enforcement of statutes against dumping trash into the bay, and the other waters surrounding our area, which are all connected to the ocean. Polluting this beautiful area is not just criminal, but shameful. We are not trying to live up to our ideals with regard to pollution.
If we could improve our efforts here in this area, could we not do so all over the country? It remains to be seen whether our efforts on Earth Day and all year round will save our environment.

How To See My 'Hood
My neighborhood is at the edge of the bay, the beach is beautiful there.
It is bordered on the north and east by the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic ocean.

Derek and Me, Our Norfolk
I've been here a little over fifteen years with Derek, he is my youngest child and I have raised him alone since he was six. He is twentyone now. As you can see from our picture he is a loving and good looking young citizen now:)

I've decided that Derek and I must live by every tenant of the new green economy. Our next car will be electric, hopefully solar charged! Derek wants the vroom vroom of the old muscle cars, we just can't go that route in good conscience.
Our next condo is going to be wind and solar powered, (maybe we'll have to fight zoning laws) this is a must for me. I can't afford Dominion Electric power anymore. I think I can however put in a wind turbine, photovoltaic solar panels, solar powered outdoor lighting, and wind and solar powered household amenities.
This is the time and I am here, therefore this is the place. We are practically in the shadow of 2 nuclear power plants owned by Dominion. I want to use clean renewable energy resources in my environment now. We can do things right here in our neighborhood and our city. We can clean up the bay. We can recycle. We can use paper instead of plastic. We can refrain from littering. We can go to our power company (Dominion) and find our way to those in power and demand that they start getting electricity from renewable energy sources.
There are literally hundreds of things to do. This is a watershed moment in human history. Do we destroy our environment, or do we use the technology we have now and improve everything we do? We will have the chance, we have a new kind of administration in Washington this year, give them a chance, work with them. Vote your conscience, only one side is on the right page with regard to the environment. I'll give you a hint it is not the hockey mom! We have the means and we can do this.
The way the environment affects some of us is often presented on a global scale, giant tidal waves or forests burning or dying as a result of climate change.
The damage we do to our environment is easier seen at a local level. Communities closer to industrial areas may be affected by higher than average asthma rates, or other respiratory problems. People suffering from hypertension (high blood pressure) have symtoms that increase with the industrial pollution rate.
Towns with poor water treatment systems (or no waste waste water treatment at all) or slow clean-up from disasters may show a disproportionate number of children with developmental problems. Witness the Katrina (hurricane) damage, which thank God, bypassed our area. However we have still got problems from Isabel that we have not seen fit to take care of as of yet.
We don't have to allow this to continue as it has. We can do something about it now! Write your elected officials, write your power company, let them know we want renewable energy resources to power our futures.
The main thing the average person can do is to live their own lives with an eye on saving our environment, recycle, don't dump and try to reduce your carbon footprint.
Every year close to Earth Day, we clean the beach in the area. It ist a something that everyone is encouraged to participate in, and we are encouraged to bring our children. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts come out and they help in this effort. My son Derek was a scout and this was not a chore, we enjoyed this activity.
After the clean-up was done a party was held at a facility we have here called Nauticus. There was food and games for the children and the adults. The point is an interesting time is had by all, not a day of drudgery. This could take place in various places across the US.
Without an effort by us all, we may look forward to climate change, catastophic weather conditions, increased disease and the destruction of our way of life.
We could change this by changing our minds when it comes to our environment. It is everyone's problem. Let's make this our mantra this Earth Day.

Cleaning To Restore The Natural Beauty of Norfolk's (and other) Beachs
Did you know that Norfolk Virginia is the home of the fleet? The United States Naval Fleet makes it's home here and this is a source of pride for all of us that live in this area. Our young men leave this area in order to defend the honor of this country. Norfolk is the site that our sailors embark from and return to when duty calls. Visit us, and check out some of the Navy's vessels that are docked here. We have polluted this area long enough, we should make changes this Earth Day.

Norfolk Is Not Where I Was Born
However I've come to enjoy living here on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic ocean. I see pollution and feel saddened by it and the destruction that it brings. I hear about species of fish no longer here. I want to see this area (called Ocean View here in Norfolk) start to come back from the effects of global warming and pollution. Let's switch to solar and wind power, stop dumping in our Bays and Oceans and save this (and other) beautiful areas.
