28 Weeks Later: The Best Horror Sequel Ever

I'm not a fan of Danny Boyle's '28 Days Later', I do however have a huge interest in the Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directed sequel '28 Weeks Later'. It's a great film and is in fact one of my all time favourite zombie movies. The cinematography is stunning, the story is excellent, and the script also is incredibly well worked which provides for an intensely entertaining overall production.

If you love a good zombie film then you should definitely greatly appreciate this one, read on to find out what I have to say about the film, and feel free to participate in the polls and state your view on which film is better; the original or this sequel.

Why I Love 28 Weeks Later

When I watched the movie '28 Days Later' I felt incredibly disappointed, I'd heard such good things about it but I just didn't really find the film at all entertaining on any level. It wasn't totally terrible; I just didn't think it was very good. I therefore vowed never to watch the sequel if ever there was one. When '28 Weeks Later' came out there was plenty of buzz again however and although I originally stuck to my morals and didn't give the film a viewing; curiosity inevitably got the better of me in the end and when I found the DVD on sale for just £5 ($10); I snapped it up immediately and took it home excitedly to watch.

'28 weeks Later' is one of the greatest sequels I've ever had the pleasure of watching and is by the far the better of the two films. Whilst '28 Days Later' is average at best; '28 Weeks Later' is totally thrilling from start to finish and I therefore recommend watching this slick zombie thriller 100%.

At the moment, I'm sticking with 28 Days Later as the better film as I cannot recall watching the other one! I think I have, however, so will have to re-watch both films and will be back to give my verdict again :)

The Plot

It's now been 6 months since the Rage virus destroyed Britain and London is now deemed to be a safe place to live in again. London is beginning to get re-populated, the city is not completely cleaned up yet but is well on its way to recovery. All the infected are now deemed to be dead and even children are now beginning to be flown into London to once more live.

The infected ran out of fresh meat to eat and without flesh the infected population soon died out. The US Army has been brought in to restore order in London and there are people on constant guard just in case by some chance the Rage virus once more breaks loose. Is it possible that the Rage virus could once more roam free and that there will be a recurrence of infection throughout the capital city? Well, if there wasn't there would be no film. Watch '28 Weeks Later' to find out how it all unfolds.

My Thoughts About the Film

Before watching this film I didn't really know what to expect. I'd heard from a very reliable source (my partner to be precise) that the film was excellent; having not been a fan of the first film however I still wasn't entirely convinced that '28 Weeks Later' would be of particularly great appeal to myself. I'm a big fan of zombie horror and essentially that's exactly what '28 Weeks Later' is; the zombies are labelled as the 'infected' throughout the film and never given the name of zombies, they are flesh eating zombies though and quick little blighters they are too.

In a zombie film there's only one bit of advice that can ever be given; whatever you do, don't get bitten. If you get bitten you become one of them, so you must avoid being bitten at all costs. It's not always particularly simple not to be bitten, it's what needs to be done however and generally with a zombie film there are one or two survivors come the end of the film. Does '28 Weeks Later' have any survivors? I really can't say, just watch the film for yourself and I promise that you will not be disappointed with what you see.

'28 Weeks Later' is incredibly gory and always here director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo makes great use of his display of absolute blood, guts, and gore. He certainly doesn't hold back on the gruesome factor and you certainly can't accuse him of showing too little here. If you're a squeamish person then I wouldn't recommend watching '28 Weeks Later', I'm a hardened horror fan and even I had to look away from the screen on the odd occasion here. Everything is shown in its full glory and always here '28 Weeks Later' is visually stunning and terrific use of cinematography is made.

In terms of zombie films that have been released in the past few years then '28 Weeks Later' is most definitely up there amongst the best. It reminds me a little of Zack Snyder's 'Dawn of the Dead' in the way that it's filmed and the manner in which the action unfolds right from the offset; I'm a big fan of Zack Snyder's 'Dawn of the Dead' as well as this film though and my drawing comparisons between the two films is certainly not meant as an insult; a definite compliment in fact. I've seen bad zombie films such as 'Diary of the Dead' and 'Resident Evil Apocalypse'; '28 Weeks Later' is no bad film however and is in fact absolutely exceptional.

It's gory, fun, and always the film will have you on the edge of your seat. It's intensely scary and the way that it's all filmed is just absolutely beautiful. The script has been well written and everything about the film just seems to fit together to absolute perfection. It's perfect in every sense of the world and I just can't speak highly enough of this fine zombie horror thriller of a film. I'm a big horror movie fan, and having seen literally hundreds of the films over the years; '28 Weeks Later' is definitely one that I would rank as up there amongst the best.

Final Verdict: '28 Weeks Later' is an intelligent and aesthetically excellent piece of film which I'd certainly recommend spending 95 minutes watching. 5 out of 5.

Fast moving zombies for sure!

julian says:

fast moving zombies

Rewards4life says:

What a hard choice, I would have to say fast moving. If they were the Zombies from my dreams who walked but could keep up with me running then I would have decided on them...
Although I must say the films of old are far superior, scarier and watchable than of late..

JustBon-Crochet-Designs says:

I'm not a big fan of the horror genre, but my husband is. He's always enjoyed watching Romero's black and white classic "Night of the Living Dead", (with slow moving zombies) the movie that really started it all, I guess. If I had to decide between the two, the fast ones scare the life out of me!

He hasn't seen the original, but did catch this one and told me how good it was. Apart from the scenes you've mentioned, he said the ones he remembers are of the children in a darkened London Underground and when the pilot of the helicopter is sitting alone.

RichLeigh says:

Fast moving zombies are definitely quite scary, they can run at you at great pace and it can therefore be quite difficult to get away from them; slow moving zombies is where the genre began however and I therefore have a high level of respect for the slow moving zombies of old and for the directors that choose to create films using the original slow movement that zombies had when the genre first started. I think fast moving zombies are definitely the most frightening; they're the hardest to escape from and seeing a zombie dash across the screen is always far more scary than see one lumber lamely across the shot.

Slow moving zombies definitely; the zombie old school is by far the best.

JaguarJulie says:

I think slow moving are more frightening -- remember the tortoise and the hare?

tdove says:

They move so slow it's scary because there is nowhere to go and you know they are going to get you eventually.
