More to Life than eBaY - I Promise!

We are excited to be selling online, especially in lieu of the market shift from eBaY as the only game in town.  2BOYSandTOYS and many great sellers have departed from eBaY and ventured out to lower cost or free sites to pass savings along to shoppers.

An item selling on eBaY for $10 can most likely be found elsewhere for $8.  Sellers on eBaY also tend to inflate shipping fees to offset Paypal Fees.

2BOYSandTOYS sells on a variety of places.  Our store is located on eCrater - stop by and find steals & deals on a variety of items for your family and home.  We have brand new and gently used clothing and fashions for all family members - mens, womens, boys, girls, teens, juniors, babies, infants, and more!

We also enjoy home fashions, especially those which are affordable.  We offer an eclectic variety of items that may be a piece you are looking for - wall art, slipcovers, frames, statues, vases, glassware and more!

We welcome you to take a chance, and enjoy our low starting auctions on PlunderHere and/or BiddersNSellers.  Both of these sites are fairly new, and owned by small business owners, which we are proud to support.

Selling Online - Sites Review

PSU Auction Site Watch Selling Site List Summary

If you are wanting to sell online, you have most certainly heard of ebaY. However, there are many more online selling venues. A great forum with more than 10,000 members is Powersellersunite.com often referred to as PSU.

From our own experience, we will begin a detailed review of the sites listed on PSU's Auction Site Watch. These are sites that are ranked in order from highest number of listings to lowest, having reached and sustained 10,000 listings.

So - first for review is ebaY. ebaY started around 10 years ago as an open market for buyers and sellers for collectibles and more. ebaY began as a simple idea to help people find new homes for items no longer wanted. Collectors and buyers of all kinds flocked to ebaY in search of that special item, gift or collectible.

ebaY has more listings than any other online auction style venue. ebaY went from small, fun and private to enormous corporate giant. While the growth has been great for the stockholders, it's been challenging for sellers and buyers. No longer can you find those special items on ebaY. The fees and policy changes over the years have driven many to sell through alternate venues or local.

ebaY presents the most buying traffic of all the online auction style sites. As expected, ebaY also presents the most competition for items available.

Detailed information to soon follow - summary - your items will most likely sell fastest on ebaY if:

- the buyers are looking for it
- the price is right
- the shipping is right

The Best Online SELLING Site IS...

To determine which alternative site, e-commerce site or online auction venue is best to sell on, you must critique with the mind of the buyer. Not just the 'mind' but the eye, the ear, etc.

IF you sell online AND you want success, you must:

- Be where buyers are
- Appeal to buyers wants and needs
- Explore as a buyer

I challenge you to pick 3 items that you have purchased online. Whether it is electronics, clothing, computers, jewelry or other - just pick 3 different items.

Write them down.

NOW - Act as buyer. Begin your process for searching, excluding, comparing, etc.

Look at those results that you decided to read/explore. What made you click-thru? Where you impressed when you did so? Was there enough information to make a decision? Sizes, weight, shipping, price, photos, etc.

These are all those elements that YOU as a SELLER must consider when selecting the best online selling site.

My experience suggests that FREE sites often tend to help sellers get exposure faster than pay-for sites.

Things to consider when looking for an online selling site include:

- Submit to Google Products search engine.
- Seller Enhancements Offered? Fair Price?
- Google Page Rank - does Google even know they exist?
- Customer Satisfaction - read what others are saying - and not just the cheer-leading squad.
- Does the site offer flexibility in presenting your item(s)?
- Do you see the ability to submit RSS feeds?
- Do you see action on the site, sales, new listings, members?

Only you can decide what the best choice is - and reading below will give you some of my experience! Happy Selling to all!

Tell Where You List and Sell!

See the Choices Below!

We welcome your feedback on where you list and sell items online. You may leave the site or sites you prefer below the poll! Thanks in advance for your input!

White Site or Sites?

You may list one, two or a few!

Please share with site or sites you list and sell on. If you don't sell online, but want to - you're welcome to also say that! Lastly, if you sell from your own website and want to leave a link, feel free! We shop as well as sell - so all input is considered!

Break the ebaY Habit - Sell and Buy on An Alternative Site

ebaY Buyers and Sellers now looking for alternative

Each year, ebaY announces price and policy changes. Each year, sellers get frustrated and attempt to analyze how it affects them. Many sellers leave for a while, or possibly forever. Many sellers adjust their business to stay.

If you approached 100 persons on a street, my gut suggests 99% have heard of ebaY. Perhaps 60-70% have used ebaY. But - of those 100 persons, how many know that there are fees incurred by sellers, and those fees are typically passed to buyers.

Shopping online is convenient, fun and often results in great deals. The next time you venture to browse or shop online, break the ebaY habit.

Start your search with Google!

The Google Shopping engine is the most comprehensive search engine for shopping online. It includes items from large e-tailers, as well as smaller stores. It's got ebaY listing, eCrater listings - many listings from a large variety of sources. All that and more is available with Google Shopping - much more so than just ebaY!

Break the ebaY habit!

Support all the sellers who are trying to break the ebaY Habit - buy from an alternative site!!

EBAY Boycott Continues - and the Beat goes ON and ON and ON

As the end of week one of the EBAY boycott comes to a close, sellers are ready to continue! How many will step forward? How many have left? How many stores have closed?

This chart of listings from MEDVED shows today to be a dropping day in listings for EBAY.
This chart shows listings for February thru current the current day.
As of 2:00pm CST, listings are at 12,800,000 +/-. Will they go up, or will they go down?

So many questions are left unanswered for sellers, buyers and EBAY. One answer though is loud and clear and shouted across the internet for all to hear:

- EBAY as it 'was' is no more. Profit and Greed have replaced the foundation upon which EBAY was built.

- The smallest EBAY sellers feel forced out; no longer wanted. Many of these sellers are looking or have found new homes.

- Many who make their primary or secondary income from EBAY are in reactive mode; never anticipating 'this' to happen.

- The Online Auction Industry has reached maturity; only the strong will survive.

- No 'One Site Fits All' Alternative exists today.

EBAY will be a 'fun-to-watch' company in 2008. As the economy slows, a recession looms and Americans tighten spending, who will be left to fund EBAY as they begin their transition into a follower - an Amazon wannabe?

Watch and see - what will be will be - and the beat goes on and on and....

EBAY Sellers Rage On

Continue the Boycott or Manage Your Business

Sellers continue to express rage, shock, disappointment and more over recently announced EBAY policy and fee changes.

As EBAY's message boards have always been censored and continue to be now, many sellers have flocked to online forums to vent and rant. Other communities are discussing business planning, setting up your own store and communities and more.

As some continue to vent and rage on Public forums, many others 'get it'. In this scenario, the 'IT' has nothing to do with EBAY or Shopping Victoriously on EBAY.

"IT" has a brand new meaning. Sellers, large and small, are opening their eyes to a brand new horizon. There is life, sites and opportunity beyond EBAY. Some of us left with a boycott in 2005. Others left with a fee increase in 2006. Still others, departed with fee and policy changes in 2007.

While many rage on that they are 'done', history suggests many sellers venture to alternative sites, sit and wait for sales, and then flock back to EBAY. This happens mostly due to a lack of knowledge or ability to promote and market - both of which attract customers to your items - no matter where they are offered for sale.

EBAY has been the rage for more than 12 years now. It's become a household name, and millions of people world wide have purchased or sold on the site. EBAY has wonderful brand recognition, and a huge embedded customer base. There is no savvy business person who would suggest leaving ebaY is easy. Most sellers tend to diversify, and ween themselves from EBAY. Many more use EBAY as part of their marketing mix and their business plan.

But, for those who got in early, got EBAYitis, and became successful there - do they have the drive, determination and business sense to move on? Or, expand and diversify? Time will tell.

As the week-long boycott is coming to and end, some are exclaiming 'let's go another week'. Others are quiet, and doing what they should - creating a business plan for success.

Do you sell online? Do you sell on EBAY? Are you diversified? In this market, I am hopeful that everyone has a Plan B. One never knows which way the wind will blow, or which change will be next for EBAY.

Watch EBAY Sell Through Rates ( STR) Here

Sell-Thur-Rates -- how many items listed end in a sale

All industries have key performance indicators (KPIs). For the Online Auction Industry (OAI), the metric more often viewed is listings. While showing the count of different listings on a site, this metric does not tell anyone what's actually selling on EBAY or any other site.

Sell-Thru-Rates, a better metric for sellers and analysts to watch, does suggest the number of items 'closed' that were listed for a given period of time.

However, Sell-Thru-Rates alone do not tell the whole story, as more transactions that we realize end up incomplete.

Boycott ebaY - Day 2

This morning is the start of day 2 for the eBAY boycott. Many sellers are discussing eBAY, the recent changes and the what's next all over the internet.

Boycott participants are watching the listings at eBAY to see if there are changes. Whether you sell or shop on eBAY, these changes will impact you.

Most of us began as innocent buyers on eBAY - looking for a unique item or a hard to find item for a good or fair price. Many collectors used eBAY to find and treasure items that they could not get locally. eBAY was fun, exciting and full of great treasures to meet the 'wants' of just about everyone.

Times are changing though. As eBAY is maturing, and embracing it's teenage years, the attitude is showing.

Teenagers tend to rebel, be egocentric, and totally self-serving. Teenagers give no regard to logic, sense or cause/effect. Teenager tend to rebel against the norm, and challenge rules specific to their environment.

We see these same behaviors in the eBAY of now. Profit is good, profit is necessary for business survival, but at what cost? The disregard for the business of others, the disregard for the intent of feedback and the lack of sense related to revised Paypal policies show us one true thing!

Like most teenagers, eBAY needs some counseling, some redirection and some down-home logic sessions.

While the small sellers may no longer fit the business model, does it make sense to completely dismiss them? Last I checked, most eBAY members starting their journey as a buyer.

The canned responses that have replaced a human response may as well have, 'whateva' in them. The meaning is the same. Or perhaps, 'Get Real'. 'Later' might also fit with the current attitude.

My hope for all is the teen-age years for eBAY do not leave too many dead bodies. For any business to survive, Customer retention is paramount. eBAY, in it's self-serving, all about me phase has complete disregard for it's family or origin - those small sellers - who...by the way - are finding success with alternative sites.

Boycott ebaY - Day 3

Sellers and buyers around the globe are boycotting ebaY. While the majority of those participating in the ebaY boycott are sellers, there are also buyers who are rallying behind sellers.

ebaY buyers may not realize the impact of the recently announced ebaY changes. Essentially, not only will sellers pay more fees when items sell, buyers will have a difficult time finding relevant items in their searches.

Buyers will soon notice that search results favor the largest sellers. These sellers tend to set the price point for the site and also often charge excessive shipping to cover their fees.

Is the Boycott effective? Only each individual member of the giant ebaY site can make that determination.

The above chart from www.medvet.net shows this weeks listings counts for ebaY's auction site. The trend does suggest an impact on listings for ebaY.

Sellers can't afford the site; buyers can't find the items. What will be the next chapter for auction giant ebaY? Only time will tell.

Great Alternatives for online Sellers Leaving ebaY

These Sites Get 'IT'

Many new auction sites are popping up on the world wide web. Site Success is a by-product of business sense, business planning and business strategy.

While those sites listed below may not be the largest, they do contain the right balance of savvy and skills to grow into successful alternatives for sellers.
PlunderHere.COM
A fast-growing auction site with FREE stores, FREE listings and a super low fee when items sell.
eCrater.COM
A fast-growing commerce site allowing members to build their own store, quickly and for FREE.
Webidz.COM
Another auction site showing great growth and a dedication to long-term survival.
UBidRight.COM
A fairly new auction site growing and focused on outstanding customer service.
AuctionQuests.COM
Another auction platform that is growing in listings and membership and has a great following!

ebaY Boycott of 2008 February 18th - 25th

What's it All About?

ebaY has again announced policy and fee changes affecting sellers on their auction site.

This week, starting today, sellers are boycotting ebay world-wide as are many buyers.

If you google ebaY boycott 2008, you'll see many upset and angry ebaY members discussing these changes and their affect all over the web.

The changes are perceived to drive away the smallest sellers, those which have the items that made ebaY what it is today.

The ebaY announcement affects fees - sellers now have a lower listing fee to place an item for sale on the auction giant. However, the fees at the end of the auction - if the item sells - are excessive and profit limiting.

ebaY announced changes to feedback - sellers may no longer leave negative feedback for buyers - even if the buyer did not live up to the conditions of the sale.

ebaY has also announced changes to Paypal policies, by which funds in sellers accounts may be help for up to 21 days under certain conditions.

So, what does it all mean? Simply put:

- Sellers on ebaY are forced to list less or move to alternative sites.

- Feedback, already compromised as a tool to measure transaction satisfaction, no longer tells a realistic story.

- Only the largest of sellers will have continued success on ebaY, suggesting a corporate desire to follow online giants such as Walmart or Amazon.

- Fees are no longer affordable, and will affect buying options on ebaY.

- Searches that used to result in hundreds of buying options, will now result in far less.

- That ebaY we all came to enjoy is no more.

As sellers and buyers boycott ebaY this week, and as the changes ebaY announced take effect, many in the online auction industry are watching closely.

Alternative sites are picking up new members, and also new listings.

Buyers have aligned themselves on forums and chat sites that in the past have been comprised of mostly sellers.

No other giant in global business today is entitled to the monopolistic hold ebaY currently has. Many sellers and analysts believe ebaY has gone too far this time. Do your part and do not sell, buy or visit ebaY this week.

Take some time, and explore alternative sites. Reach out to sellers you've purchased from in the past, and see where they have their business today. Support the 'small guy' and you will be surprised to find lower prices off-ebaY rather than on.

After all, with each fee increase, who ends up paying? It's the consumers that fund these changes, as is with all other price adjustments in our economy.

Boycotting ebaY? Sound Off Here!

Your Thoughts and Your solutions are welcome!

Stop....in the Name of Love

Yes - a Song Title but so much more meaning now

Every now and again, life throws curve balls. Merchants and sellers online arrive at their computers each day to see what has transpired since the last visit. Have there been sales? Do I need to send invoices? What needs to ship today? What inventory needs to be added?

Whether online selling is:

- your primary or secondary source of income
- a hobby for you and your family
- an opportunity to generate more contacts

in reality - it doesn't matter. The internet opens many opportunities for business and relationships.

My intent today is not to share about a great site, a great alternative to ebaY or even about great buying places.

I share with you the story of the 'reality' of many independent business owners. Meet Harold and Martha. Harold - also known as The Pet Guy and Martha - also known as Flying High were thrown a curve ball very recently.

Flying High was diagnosed with cervical cancer. While this news by itself is a devastating blow for anybody, multiply 'it' by 100. You see, The Pet Guy and Flying High, husband and wife online selling team, do not have medical insurance.

I belong to a small community of lovely online sellers. We share strategies, knowledge, tips, tricks and over time --- so much more. We do not know each other face to face, and many of us have never spoken on the phone. But - we share a very common character asset - service to others.

When I first heard the news about Martha's cancer diagnosis, it shook me to my core. You see, while I've never met Martha face to face, I've met Martha and Harold online. They are beautiful people who have given me so much, it's like we've met, celebrated life and known each other for years.

Perhaps by now, I've bored you. Perhaps by now, you wonder what this has to do with this lens. Perhaps by now, you're ready to hit the back button, or go to a different lens. Before you leave, I ask you to Stop....in the Name of Love.

Harold and Martha could be:

- Your Mother or Father
- Your Aunt or Uncle
- Your Brother or Sister
- Your Son or Daughter
- Your Best Friend for Life

The reality is they need help. You can help by: submitting a donation through Paypal.

and / or you can help by: shopping at their online store.

Preferred Sites for Selling Items (Alternatives to ebaY)

Just say NO to ebaY Fees

We've been involved in e-commerce for many years, but didn't start selling for a while! When we did decide to give it a try, like many - we went to ebaY! Why not?

EbaY provides a captive audience, and WAS a fun and affordable way to find homes for items no longer needed or wanted.

Fast forward a bit, and if you google ebaY fees, or ebaY fee increases - you'll find many of the same sellers that built the site have departed. They've built their own site or have set up shop at alternative sites.

Since February of 2005, we've spent time exploring alternative auction and e-commerce sites. We have test-driven more than 25 sites, and will give a read-out on those we've experienced.

For experienced sellers, we all know that ebaY without a doubt has the most traffic and the most buyers. We also know that not all items for sale are equally popular, so our results may differ from your results.

Test-Driven and Discarded Sites

Our Lack of Success may not be Yours!

One true statement about alternatives to ebaY - not all sellers perform well on the same site. This applies to ebaY as well as alternative sites.

If you have a site that is working well for you, and you participate in the forum 'there' or another forum where success is discussed, you know what I'm saying.

However, there are some sites that we do not see as 'long-haul' survivors. We'll give our reasons below. If you have opposing opinions and experiences, we welcome you to 'sound out' below!

Sites We do NOT Recommend

Share your Experience below!

There are sites we've been to, signed up, listed on and then moved away from. While sellers have different needs (free vs. fee-based site), the key to successful online sales is traffic - which generally equates to sales!

These are our experiences, and may not reflect your experience. If your experience differs greatly - shout it out in our comments area below!
HiBidder.COM - Lacking Customer Service
HiBidder.COM came to the market with a bang! The site grew reasonably fast, had a variety of great sellers and a variety of great listings.

In recent months, HiBidder.COM has lost focus on it's number one customer base - the sellers.

Sellers have been locked out of their stores and business with no notice and no reason.

Contest Winnings are not delivered when promised or as promised.

Problems on the site are not handled in a timely manner or are suggested to be 'user issue' vs. 'site issue'.

For what started out with so much promise, has like others before it lost focus and become a closed community. This site now mandates joining to view community forums, which is in place to boost the membership, currently at 3,855.

Site statistics used to be publicly available in extensive detail, but are no long viewable.

With current listings of ~~26,000~~ items, approximately 65% belong to moderators or administrative staff - and are mostly drop ship items listed in quantities ranging from 3-12.

The HiBidder.COM home page suggests that more than 650,000 items have been listed; either the quantity of items available on the site has dropped intensely, or the same 26,000 items are counted over and over again as they are relisted.

Once upon a time, a very promising place that we listed more than 1,400 items at has now become a ghost town with 19 stores having 200 or more listings.

Your time and money are better spent elsewhere.
The Auction Man
Once upon a time, this site was thriving. Sellers were thrilled, support was outstanding and listings were plentiful and varied.

The site now gives the appearance of listings, and activity but most stores, sellers and traffic has disappeared.

This site has been removed from PowerSellersUnite, and you can read information from users, sellers and the site admin here.

This site had potential at one time. However, one-man shows will not survive in the online selling arena. Dedicated, committed staff will be a key ingredient for long-term success.
Q Shop Now - formally BidChaser.com
QShopNow, formally known as BidChaser.com was another site that had potential. Sellers flocked to the site, loaded up inventory and then watched and waited for the promised traffic from the owners and staff.

The application platform was always 'glitchy', but we all were patient in our efforts/needs. The site transformed through changes in ownership and 'other' to QShopNow, and many sellers listings were removed, others were resurrected and chaos erupted.

Sellers that were a part of the original site, BidChaser.COM lost faith in the site owner due to unfulfilled promises. We, as one seller, will not support the 'new world' of QShopNow!

The Best Places to Shop

Always Compare before you Purchase

Finding Bargains online is often overwhelming. If you do a standard shopping search using
Yahoo Shopping or Google Products, typically there are more search results returned than one could ever review in their lifetime!

When you intend to compare prices and stores for a specific item, I recommend you look at a variety of options. Not all search engines return the same information and not all online merchants submit to the same engines.

For all who shop on
ebaY for great deals and bargains, take note of total price vs. item price. Example - search on google products for
Missouri Tigers 3 x 5 Flag. 28 results returned for me. Sort by price - low to high. Now - look at shipping variances - $4.95 - $7.95.

If you use
Buy.COM, you do not get as many results and all are same priced.

If you use Yahoo Shopping, the returned results are only partial list of what's truly available - based on paid inclusion.

Bottom line up front - when shopping online, be certain to use several search engines for comparing price, selection, shipping and description!

Shopping with the sellers listed here will always result in best pricing and best service. Enjoy your shopping day.
