Have You Lost a Furry Family Member to Cancer?

One man named Luke is raising funds to find out "why". 2 Dogs 2000 Miles is an effort to raise funds to find the cause of cancer in dogs. If we find the cause, maybe we can take steps to eradicate the disease.

It's strange to think that Luke and the fuzzy butts are coming to the end of their journey. If you live in or around Boston, MA make it a point to stop out for the final leg of the journey on June 19th, 2010.

Memorial T-Shirt #6 has been released

The final memorial shirt has been released with all of the names of our furry loved ones added. You can read more about these lost pets in the 2 Dogs Newsletter. Just a word of warning, make sure you have a kleenex handy.

You can order the final memorial shirt through this link.

Does Your Dog Have Cancer?

2 Dogs 2,000 Miles has teamed up with the Canine Hereditary Cancer Consortium (CHCC) with a goal to collect 2,000 DNA samples in order to further cancer research in our furry loved ones. This research will not only help pets, but humans as well.

If your furry family member has cancer, please click the banner to the left and find out how to donate a DNA sample. It doesn't matter what type of cancer it is.

Malcom's Story

Luke Robinson has lived through a battle with cancer. The battle was not his own, but the fight of his beloved Great Pyrenees, Malcom.

In May of 2004, Malcom was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive cancer of the bones. One month later, Malcom lost his leg to the cancer and underwent chemotherapy. Malcom learned to adjust and walk on three legs within weeks of the surgery extending his life by almost 2 years.

The 2 years weren't easy. It turns out that osteosarcoma is so aggressive that it metastasizes about 90% of the time and Malcom was not spared. In August 2005, a grapefruit sized tumor was found in his lung and he was given 2 weeks to month to live.

It turns out that Malcom was a fighter, he was able to give Luke 5 more months of fun and love; he passed away on January 11th, 2006.

YBD (Yer Big Dog) Foundation was formed

After Malcom's death, Luke wanted to know why Malcom developed the bone cancer. He formed the YBD Foundation, which operates the 2 Dogs 2000 Miles project. The YBD Foundation is a registered nonprofit in the state of Massachusetts, ID number 262798452. To access the Foundation's Articles of Organization, you can visit the Secretary of the Commonwealth website.

The mission of the YBD Foundation is as follows:

To operate exclusively for charitable, educational, outreach and scientific purposes related to the reduction in the incidence of cancer and improve cure rates for all those touched by this disease.

We strive for the goals of:

1. Promoting public interest and awareness
through education about the causes for
the rise in animal cancer.

2. Encouraging and supporting those
institutions that conduct research in the
field of comparative oncology which
compares human and animals cancers in
order to find the causes relative to each.

3. Establishing and empowering
collaborative efforts among individuals,
groups, communities and institutions
that seek to find the causes of cancer.

It is important to remember that cancer is not only growing in our furry friends, but humans as well. I am 95% sure that any knowledge gained through this research will benefit people as well.

I deeply sympathize with all who have lost a pet to cancer, especially a disease as aggressive and as devastating as canine osteosarcoma. My Standard Poodle Nikki was diagnosed at about eight-and-a-half years old. I was totally blindsided. My vet gave us no options, just sympathy and what he called "a death sentence." I refused to believe it and researched as rapidly as I could. The result is at http://NikkisStory.com - information I wish that I had when Nikki was diagnosed.

About finding a cause for cancer. There is much information that is being suppressed. Cancer is a big business. Nothing more to say.

Thanks for bringing this information up for comment.

    Best wishes for you lens,
    Julia

My connection with 2 Dogs 2,000 Miles is through my book, The Healing Art of Pet Parenthood. I am pleased to have this review written by Luke and posted on Amazon.com:

A Touching and Timely Story..., August 27, 2008
By 2 Dogs 2000 Miles "Hudson, Murphy, and Yer Big Dog (Boston, MA)

Not often have I come across a book about the relationship between people and pets that truly speaks to me. The story of Nadine and Buttons is heartwarming and endearing and I feel blessed by having experienced it. In many ways, it's my own. I lost my boy, Malcolm, to bone cancer and know both the depth of loss and the loneliness and isolation one feels from societal preconceptions. It's a brave book and about damn time!
