Simple HTML Commands Make 3-D Effect With Startling Results!

Every time I do a new Squidoo lens, I try to add some additional glitz and glamour to it. Sometimes I succeed. Sometimes I don't. I am even going back to add upgraded touches to the previously published lens. In this lens, I introduced a new effect, that of a three-dimensional feel. This is done by using certain combinations of color which give the effect of depth. Let me know if you like this effect. I'd love to hear from you.

I am going to do this lens using the technique for several common Squidoo modules. After only being involved with Squidoo since last May, I realize that there are many lensmasters with much more skill than me in html and can figure out more ways of adding 3-d effects. This particular effect only works for me with these color combinations, limiting somewhat its utility. Hopefully, some of you html experts can expand on this concept with other color combinations or methods which have the same or similar effect.

I am also simultaneously doing another lens in my Caribbean Cruise Destinations series on Roatan Hondurasusing this technique.

This is a technique that should not be overused because of its powerful, somewhat overpowering appearance. But used sparingly, it can add an outstanding effect to a lens.

I admit that I am overusing it in this lens and in the Roatan lens because I want to indicate some of its usefulness in different modules.

I hope you enjoy your experimentation with this tool. I AM NOW USING IT ON ALL OF MY OWN "MY BIO" MODULES (My trademark?)

The HTML Is Simple

Here I am copying the first paragraph from the introductory paragraph with a description of the HTML code following. It is really very simple.

The code for the initial E is as follows:

<b style="FONT-SIZE:100px; FLOAT:left; COLOR:black;LINE-HEIGHT:70px;PADDING-TOP:2px;FONT-FAMILY:times">E</b>

You simply replace the letter you want enlarged where the "E" is, followed by the rest of the sentence. For more information of how to do this, see the lens Advanced HTML For Squidoo.

Below I am giving the HTML that I used to get the 3-D effect, along with the effect each HTML command gives. I decided to use the "New Text List Voting (Plexo)" module to list the HTML codes. Why? I just liked the numbering appearance and it also displays the code without actually executing it. I told you I like to experiment!

The Effect of Using Black Alone With The Blue Background

Below this module I am using a numbered text module to show what the effect of these three steps are individually. The 3-D effect only occurs when all three color codes are used in the same module, blog, website, etc.

Effect of Using Red Alone With The Blue Background

Unfortunately, I can't (I don't think)copyright, trademark, or otherwise legally protect myself from others using the technique, so go for it (my simple contribution to novelty and innovation on a squidoo site.

Effect of Using Red And Black With The Blue Background

I would ask that if you come up with other ways to get this 3-D effect, you would keep me informed. You can easily see from this short paragraph what the combinations of color can do.

There are only three HTML commands needed to get this effect. Notice that it is the combination of colors that give the contrast which appears as a 3-D effect.

The three commands follow and below them (using a "New Text List" module - I just felt like it) are examples of the execution of each command, also numbered.

Examples Of Executed HTML Statements Above

  1. Make the background of module blue

  2. Make the letters red.
  3. Make the letters black.

My Discovery Of This Effect

In 1997 when the World Wide Web was really just beginning to get noticed, my son and I got involved with attempts at creating websites for some friends. It eventually led to the establishment of a company through which we helped others with construction of web sites. Our sophistication was not that great (and neither was most others at that time), but we had fun learning. Needless to say, shortly thereafter, the big boys jumped in and started competing and we decided making websites was not what we wanted to do for the rest of our lives.

But during that time we made a web site for a Karate group with whom my son was associated. We used the Karate Association's logo (which happened to be blue) as a background and began to experiment with different color schemes. At that time, a lot of web sites were much gaudier than now (and not as professional looking either).

The end result was that the combination of their blue logo and the black and red letters gave us the 3-D effect you see in this lens. I did not know the exact color of blue and when I tried it later, could never quite get the same result. I couldn't use the association's logo so I simply forgot about it.

Then, as I was experimenting with backgrounds on some squidoo modules, I suddenly realized that this was the blue I had been looking for. I tried the same effect I had gotten some ten years before and it worked. And guess what? I liked it!

I realize that this effect can easily be overdone because it is so powerful, but with all of the ingenuity collectively in the Squidoo community, I will probably be amazed at some of the applications that will come out of this.

What Can You Do With This Technique In Squidoo?

The answer to that question is up to you. However, it you would like to see some examples of the technique used on different modules, you can check out my latest lens on Caribbean Cruise Destinations on Roatan, Honduras.

I admittedly overdid the use of the technique, but I did it to illustrate how the 3-D effect would look when used on specific modules. I felt that this would give squidoo'ers a starting point for stimulating their own creative juices.

I think this blue 3-D effect might work well with maritime related lenses. I will continue to experiment and hope others will do the same.
