The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was first introduced in the year 1996. It was introduced by the United States Congress to regulate certain aspects of the health care industry. HIPAA is a solid protection shield, which follows some strict rules for the protection and to maintain privacy of a person's medical information. It is very important that the owners of "covered entities" i.e. any business or organization which is related to health information of a patient in any way, know and follow the rules laid out by HIPAA.

3 HIPAA Violation Rules

The three common rules violation that he or she should especially avoid are as follows.

1. The owner must ensure that there is no administrative violation of rules that are laid by HIPAA. As an owner, you need to make sure that all the people employed by you are well trained, and they follow strict rules that will help in protecting and securing the information of the patients. It is very important to be aware of the different terms of the HIPAA, because failure to comply with any of these, can lead to criminal and civil penalties. That is why you need to make sure your employees undergo HIPAA training.

2. Ensure that anybody connected to your organization/business is not misusing this information for personal benefit. Any breach made by any employee and the action taken under HIPAA should be informed; inform the patient or the insured person immediately. This information should be written on white paper with an easy to understand language. The letter should contain the date of the breach and the actions involved, including the action taken under HIPAA and the contact detail. The contact detail helps the patient party get in touch for further clearance. It is very important that the letter reaches the person within 60 days from the day of the revision.

3. Even though HIPAA rules are strict enough, it is essential that you follow the state rules to avoid fraud. You should also take care that violation resulted due to ignorance is avoided. There are audits done by the officers of Health and Human Services regularly to determine if any kind of violation that has occurred.
