Understanding the Basics

Have you ever thought of starting an online business? If yes, do you have doubts about whether you can pull it off? There's many different types of online businesses, but there are three parts that are common to any type of online business. Once you understand those parts, you'll see for yourself that it's actually not tricky at all the start an online business.

Part 1: An online Presence

This can be a website or blog. Basically this is the space online that you aim to get web traffic to.

You can either pay for web hosting to host your website or blog. Or you can get a free website or blog by companies that offer free websites and blogs. Those companies host the website or blog for you. There may be some limitations with free websites and blogs. If you want to have your own blog for free, you should definitely try Blogger.com since they are easy to use and you can do a great deal with your blog. Even monetizing your blog is easy with Blogger.com which has Adsense and Amazon Associates widgets which you can easily add to your blog.

Part 2: Monetization

This is where you make money from the traffic that visited your website or blog. Now, you probably won't be able to make money from each and every single visitor, but you can try to make money from the majority of your visitors, assuming that your traffic is targeted. The more targeted traffic that you get, the more money you'll make.

There are different ways to monetize your site or blog, each method has its own pros and cons. You can make money through methods such as Affiliate Marketing, Pay-Per-Lead, Adsense, online auctions like eBay, selling ad space or selling your own products (Physical or digital) and services online.

Part 3: Web Traffic

You need people to visit your website or blog before you can actually make any money.

No matter how you monetize your blog or website, if you don't have any traffic to your blog or site, you are not going to make any money. So, if you want your online business to succeed, you need traffic.

If you really want your site or blog to succeed, you need to get targeted traffic to your site. Targeted traffic, being those that are actually interested in what your site or blog has to offer. It is pointless if someone looking for 'free insurance quotes' lands on a blog about 'gardening' as that person would just leave that gardening blog. However, if someone was looking for gardening tips lands on the gardening blog, they are going to stay on that blog a lot longer.

There are 2 types of ways to traffic: Paid and Free. Paid traffic would be PPC campaigns or buying ad-space on a blog. Free ways to get traffic would be Search-Engine-Optimization, article marketing, social bookmarking, forum posting and commenting on blogs.
