Learn Successful People Skills

Let's say success is performing at the top of your game, whether the game be parenting, stocks, soccer, or being a decent human being. How do you know if you are functioning at your best? Since there is always room for improvement its hard to tell but most people know if they are NOT near peak performance. When you're in a rut, have consistently chaotic relationships, feel that no one understands you at all, you know there is room for improvement. Maybe you're tired all the time, feel like you are marking time, or that you can never catch up or be good enough.

I don't have all the answers, obviously, but I do know three habits or skills that, when used, always make life go better. These skills involve:

- Authentic Communication
- Taking Responsibility
- Living with Awareness

Anyone who struggles with one of those skills has problems in some parts of their lives. If you are lacking in 2 or 3 of those habits your life is a bumpy road.

The great thing is, these skills can be developed and become habit, even seem part of your character. So what's the big deal about these 3 keys to more happiness anyway?

The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter their life by altering their attitude.

~ William James ~

Important!

Skill #1

If you do not, or cannot, let people know how you actually think and feel no one will have any chance of understanding you. You can't be known by most people unless your words match your thoughts and feelings to the best of your ability. This holds true for those who talk a lot or a little.

"Feelings or emotions are the universal language and are to be honored. They are the authentic expression of who you are at your deepest place." ~ Judith Wright ~

Express Yourself

Important!

Skill #2

Taking responsibility for yourself is "owning up" to what you say and do. It's not about who did what in the past. It is about what you do or say right now, today, this moment. It requires letting go of blame.

Self responsibility gives a sense of personal power to those who exercise it. It's a bit like graduating to the "grown-ups table" at family dinner celebrations.

Live Your Truth

Important!

Skill #3

Awareness is seeing without interpretation or judgment (not that either of those are bad). It is just that the shared reality we experience is made different by each person's beliefs & perceptions. To find a basis for understanding we need the common ground of awareness.

What do I hear? What do I see? What do I taste or smell? What does my body feel? When two or more people can be in a situation and answer those questions without personal bias, their present reality is virtually the same.

Awake and Aware

Authenticity

being true to yourself

A hunger for authenticity guides us in every age and aspect of life. It drives our explorations of work, relationships, play, and prayer. Teens and twentysomethings try out friends, fashions, hobbies, jobs, lovers, locations, and living arrangements to see what fits and what's "just not me." Midlifers deepen commitments to career, community, faith, and family that match their self-images, or feel trapped in existences that seem not their own. Elders regard life choices with regret or satisfaction based largely on whether they were "true" to themselves.

by Karen Wright, Psychology Today

Things alter for the worse spontaneously, if they be not altered for the better designedly.

~ Francis Bacon ~
