Intro -- 31-Day Devotional -- Learn To Hear From God

Here are the links for the entire 31-Day Devotional -- Learn To Hear From God. This page is a hub; from here you can find all 31 lenses in the series.

Each lens of the 31-day devotional has six ingredients: (1) an intro and table of contents, (2) a short article, (3) an action step, (4) a video that illustrates the theme of the article, (5) a guestbook where you can post questions, comments, or testimonies, and (6) a list of links to other lenses (pages) for each day. To keep the list of links short, I'm listing one week at a time.

The purpose on each lens is to nudge you into a closer relationship with Jesus, where you will find it easier and easier to hear from God. Let Him apprentice you; He's a great teacher!

Can God Speak Through An Interruption?

At just the right moment, a low-flying airplane added just the right sound effect as I was recording a video. It was an example of flow, one of the three principles covered in weeks one and two of the 31-day devotional. It also exemplifies the language of conviction -- see week three of the devotional -- and the principles of judging what we hear, which we will explore in week four. (Weeks two through four are coming soon.)

Bottom line: God can use anything to speak, so we have to be ready for Him to surprise us. It can be a lot of fun; after all, joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. So enjoy the process as you grow, and expect God to surprise you again and again.

A Note From The Author - Learn To Hear From God -- The 31-Day Devotional

The principles in this devotional have been tested. I have been a Christian for more than forty years and a teacher, pastor, or traveling preacher for more than thirty. I am used to seeing the gifts of the Holy Spirit flow both inside and outside the church.

John began his first epistle by saying, "That which we have seen and heard, and which our hands have handled of the word of life - that which we have seen and heard, we declare to you." In forty years of following Jesus, I have seen and heard the things I'm presenting in this devotional. The written part will point you to scripture. The videos will give samples of what I've seen and heard.

As of 11/19/2010, the articles are posted for days 1-28, and the videos for days 1-18. I'll be adding articles and videos until all 31 days are complete.

This project was birthed in prayer. I am convicted to invite you not into hard disciplines, but into an easygoing apprenticeship with Jesus. I might be a good teacher, but He is a great one. Too often, Christian discipleship becomes a form of distance learning, with a teacher pouring out information and a disciple working hard to apply what has been learned. Apprenticeship is different; it can't work at all without being in the presence of the Master. Then as you follow Him, He will train you.

That's what this devotional is all about. Each day's entry is designed to nudge you to engage with Him. He'll do the real work. I will count myself a success if you grow into more intimate friendship with Jesus, hearing from Him clearly and often.

Positioning Ourselves To Hear

There are three main things we can do to position ourselves to hear from God: quiet our hearts, focus on Jesus, and look for a flow of words or of God's non-verbals. These three actions don't have to happen in any particular order, and one often leads to another.

The videos on each lens give testimonies of how each principle has worked in my own life or in the life of someone I know.

The Language Of Conviction

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." Many people quote this verse, but what is the fear of the Lord? A good working definition is what Jesus called the conviction of the Holy Spirit. As we yield to conviction, it opens a fountain of divine wisdom to us.

As of October 23, 2010, I've posted the text for week three. In the next week or two, I should be able to complete each lens by adding a video that gives a testimony about the day's article and action step..

Test What You Hear

As we hear from God, we need to test all things and hold fast what is good. This isn't just a pass/fail system deciding what is and what isn't really a word from God. We can also misapply what we hear, making it into something God didn't intend. So during week 4 of the 31-day devotional, we're exploring how to receive words from God and translate them into appropriate action.

Go Deeper

I knew what to call weeks 1-4, for each week has seven days. But what should I call the three leftover days? They don't make a week, but they're certainly part of a 31-day month. I decided to call them THE LAST DAYS, even though they don't focus on end-time teachings at all. Read Matthew 25 if you like and see if days 29-31 tie in with the end-time parables Jesus taught in that chapter.

Here's the theme. Go deeper in learning to hear from God by (1) maintaining a sense of adventure as you experience more and more of Him; (2) making a habit of seeking God for at least 5 opportunities a week to share a word in season with somebody; and (3) working through the devotional again, but this time taking a friend or a group with you.
