33rd Americas Cup

The 33rd Americas Cup - Will Team Alinghi be able to defend the Americas Cup for a third time?

This image shows Ed Baird while holding the America Cup on July 3rd 2007, right after the handing over ceremony when Team Alinghi won with 5 : 2 match races against Emirates Team New Zealand.

One thing is sure, the 33rd edition of the Americas Cup will be at least as exiting as the 32nd: Bigger yachts and more crew members!

... and big egoes of the milliardaires fighting each other in courts and on the water (hopefully....). The dispute between Bertarelli'a alinghi and Larry Ellison of Team BMW Oracle Racing is at this time on paper only and will go to court.

Team New Zealand is the 4th challenger for the 2009 America's Cup.

British 'TeamOrigin' Challenges for the 33rd America's Cup

This brings the total number of challengers currently to three

TeamOrigin with the Royal Thames Yacht Club declared as their home yacht club, marks the return to the America's Cup for the United Kingdom. The team is under the management and leadership of Sir Keith Mills.

The callenge of this team was announced on the 24th of July by ACM, who formally accepted the callenge.

In a press release, Sir Keith Mills commented from London, "TeamOrigin and the RTYC have together challenged for the America's Cup believing that a Host City, a full regatta programme for the coming seasons and a class rule for the new boat to be used for the 33rd America's Cup Match will shortly be announced. TeamOrigin further believes that several other teams will challenge in the coming weeks and months following these announcements."

Mike Sanderson is the Team Director for TeamOrigin. Mike Sanderson was named ISAF World Sailor of the Year for 2006 and is the winning skipper of the 2005-06 Volvo Ocean Race. He believes that it's a good time to start a campaign, as new boats will be defined: "We believe it will be easier for a new team to become competitive at the America's Cup with the introduction of a new class of boat and should deliver faster sailing and a more exciting spectacle."

South African Team Shosholoza Challenger for 33rd America's Cup

Captain Salvatore Sarno perosnally loged Notice of Entry

There is a second official entry challenging alinghi for the 33rd America's Cup.

Captain Salvatore Sarno of 'Team Shosholoza' had personally lodged a Notice of Entry and submitted all necessary certificates and a performance bond with the Swiss Société Nautique Genève (SNG). SNG is the defending yacht club of the 32nd America's Cup winners Team alinghi. The team represents The South African Royal Cape Yacht Club.

Team Shosholoza was eliminated early in the Vuitton Cup finishing 7th in the Challengers trials. But despite this early exit, the team had made a great impression and also bulit up it's own self confidence.

The question everybody asks themselves at this point is, where the Team Shosholoza got the money from to log their challenge. It's known that there is not enough money at this time to sustain a full America's Cup campaign. When asked about that Captain Sarno replied that he is looking for Sout African company to sponsor them.

It's well possible that at this time he benefits from the same treatment as the Team New Zealand was given by Ernesto Bertarelli for the 32nd Cup: He had lent Team New Zealand a coinsiderable amount of money to allow the to get organized and started. This would now also be in his own interest, because the more participants accept the current Cahllenger of Records, the less likely Larry Ellison's court challenge is going to be successful...

Golden Gate Yacht Club Sues Société Nautique de Genève

The Supreme Court of the State of New York Will Decide

This is from the press release of the Golden Gate Yacht Club:

New York, NY, 20 July 2007 -- Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) filed a lawsuit today against the Société Nautique de Genève (SNG) in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, which has jurisdiction over the America's Cup Deed of Gift.

The San Francisco club is asking the Court to:

- void the purported challenge of the Club Náutico Español de Vela (CNEV) because CNEV does not qualify under the Deed of Gift as a challenger;

- declare the "Protocol Governing the 33rd America's Cup" agreed between SNG and CNEV null and void because (i) CNEV was an invalid challenger, and (ii) SNG is engaging in self-dealing by accepting CNEV's purported challenge and entering into a protocol which eliminates Challenger rights and omits basic information regarding match rules and conditions.

- declare that GGYC's challenge filed on 11 July 2007 for the 33rd America's Cup is valid; and

- require SNG to accept GGYC's challenge, and implement the terms of the Deed of Gift by participating with GGYC in the establishment of a proper protocol though a consensual process; or, failing that, to proceed with a match with GGYC under the rules expressly set forth in the Deed of Gift.

America's Cup Challenger - Larry Ellison Ready To Sue!

Team BMW Oracle Racing Officially Challenges Alinghi Too

As has happened many times in the past, the rich owners of the America's Cup Yachts not only dispute themselves for the Cup on the water, but also in court. The next court battle could only be a few weeks away.

Team BMW Oracle Racing, represented by the Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) turned up in Geneva on Tuesday, 10th July 2007 and handed over a written challenge letter. They claim that the team chosen as the official challenger, Desafio Espanol, is not fulfilling all the conditions sa stipulated in the 'Deed of Gift', dating from 1878.

The deep stipulates, that the current defender of the America's Cup can be challenged by anybody within 10 months, if no 'Challenger of Records', fulfilling all the conditions(that is currently Desafio Expanol), can be presented by the defender himself. Reason for Team BMW Oracle Racing's assumption is that Desafio Espanol's yacht club, 'Club Nautico Espanol de Vela', has not yet organized an international regatta...

If Team BMW Oracle Racing is accorded the right to challenge by the courts, they would have to race within the next 10 months, and it would be the challenger (Team BMW Oracle Racing) who decided on the boats to be used.

Larry Ellison's lawyers further claim, that the contract between alinghi and Desafio Espanol is nil for other reasons as well. They maintain that because the contract does not stipulate, when and where and with exactly which boats the race will take place, it can not be valid.

Sailors for the America's Cup Change Teams?

Rumors about Teams and Top Sailors for the 33rd America's Cup

One rumor, which seems to be very close to the actual facts, spells out, that Francesco de Angelis has, or will be leaving Luna Rossa, the team he has been with for three America's Cups.

An other story that makes the round is about James Spithill. He is said to have had talks with alinghi about him and his team of young top sailors joining the alinghi team. It seems that he has been offered a position in the Swiss team for the last race already. He declined because the offer was only open to him and not to his crew. Now that the average age of the alinghi crew is getting higher every year, and it's expected that some of the members will not stay beyond the next cup, it would make a lot of sense to pull in young blood.

AC Management confident that contract with Team Desafio OK

Michel Bonnefous, managing director of AC Management (ACM) is talking about 'a bad looser' in his reaction the about the latest move of Larry Ellison.

"After the win of alinghi in 2003, when Ellison was chosen to be challenger of records, he signed a very similar protol, that did also not stipulate where the next America's Cup would take place and with which boats we would be racing", said Michel Bonnefous. "Everything has been checked by our legal team many times over, and we calmly wait what this move will finaly result in.

Larry Ellison is riking to be excluded from the 33rd Cup races, should his Team BMW Oracle Racing lose in court.

33rd Americas Cup - in 2009 - 2010 or 2011?

The America's Cup, according to alinghi and Desafio Espanol should take place with new boats:

In a press conference beginning of July 2007 the Defender Alinghi and the Challenger Desafio Espanol and the Americas Cup Organizing comitee have announced that future Americas Cup yachts will be larger in size, will carry more crew members (20 or 21 as opposed to the 17 in the 32nd Americas Cup) and that they will be sailed in stronger winds.

Also, depending on the location where the Cup will take place (again Valencia is the most likely scenario) it might happen already in 2009, or as late as 2010 or even 2011 if a new venue needs to be chosen.

In any case, I'm looking forward to great racing again!

33rd America's Cup: Already 8 or 9 Teams Ready to Compete

Michel Bonnefous, CEO of ACM said on the press conference announcing the 33rd Americas Cup that there is already very high interest from the teams to compete in the next Cup:

"In Auckland only two or three teams committed to competing [for the 32nd America's Cup], this time we already have eight or nine teams who have declared that they are willing to continue [and race in the 33rd A,erica's Cup]. Honestly it could perhaps increase but we don't know. We'll see."

The new Americas Class Yachts

The time of wooden boats in the America's Cup is over, matter of fact has been over since 1974, the year when wooden yachts were last used in the Americas Cup.

Ever since modern consturction material has been used, the America's Cup is the 'Fromula 1' of sailing, and like in motor sports, these yachts are the precursors of what will be used in boat buidling in future.

So how are the yachts for issue 33 going to look like? From the little information that is available at this time one can already say that Americas Cup Racing will ber very exiting:

The new ACC (Amercas Cup Class) will have a few exiting features, and it will be a lot larger than the old class:

90 foot yachts with a mast of maximum 40 meters! (up to now the mast hight was limited to 33 meters). No electrical winches or the like, all just human power... - and the vrew will be 20 or 21 people, instead of the fromer limit of 17. Guess just on the winches a few more grinders will be necessary :-).

Alinghi chief designer Rolf Vrolijnk and design coordinator Grant Simmer have prepared these preliminary measurements, the final definitons will presented later.

Valencia and AC Management in Negociations

The new venue for the 33rd Americas Cup is not yet defined. Michel Bonnefous, managing director of AC Management (ACM) is in negotiations with the Valencia gevernement. It seems that the commercial harbour that needs more space might conflict with the plans of ACM and the Port of America's Cup (the official name of the beautiful harbour installations that were built specifically for the 32nd Armeicas Cup).

If the races take place in Valencia they could start as early as 2009, if an other spot needs to be defined, the 33rd America Cup racing will only start in 2010 or 2011.

Louis Vuitton stops Sponsorship of the Preliminaries

The Louis Vuitton concern has decided to stop the sponsorship of the Louis vuitton Cup, the elimination races to determine which one of the challengers can enter the final and race the defender for the America's Cup.

Apparently they feel, that the way AC Management markets the America's Cup does not keep enough exclusicity.... I think they are missing the boat somewhat, but I'm also sure there are plenty of comapnies standing by to pick up where LV drops the ball.
